AIBU to say something to neighbours drilling and hammering at 9am this morning?

I was up and dressed but visitors we have staying were not, I could understand starting early if they were having huge building works done or had a building firm in but they are simply decorating their spare bedroom!

I may be being unreasonable but wanted to check out the general opinion before knocking on their door!

Sorry YABU. 9am on a weekday is fair game for doing noisy work IMO.

Pootletrinket · 19/04/2011 10:47

No, I think 9am is OK, tbh

CMOTdibbler · 19/04/2011 10:47

They are perfectly entitled to start at 9am - in fact I'd say that on a weekday 8am is fine too

JustAnother · 19/04/2011 10:47

yes, YABU. By 9 am many of us have been at work for an hour. It's not like it is a Sunday!

greenlotus · 19/04/2011 10:48

They've probably only got a few days of the holiday to do it in. Not everyone can afford to pay builders, some of us have to use our spare time. YABU, it is the working week. It would be another thing if it was 10pm on a Sunday night.

I sympathise but YABU I reckon.

Jaydles · 19/04/2011 10:48

I think as annoying as it is for you most people would expect 9am to be a reasonable time to start work. I would imagine they think you are either at work or up with children. It would piss me off though having to listen to it I feel your pain

Goblinchild · 19/04/2011 10:48

9am on a Tuesday?
If it had been 7am you might have had a point.

TheCowardlyLion · 19/04/2011 10:49

YABU. Why on earth would you think you weren't BU?

Lawm01 · 19/04/2011 10:50

So what time is reasonable in your opinion?

nethunsreject · 19/04/2011 10:50

Yabu.

9 am is perfectly reasonable!

LaurieFairyCake · 19/04/2011 10:50

I think 8am is totally fine

Goblinchild · 19/04/2011 10:50

Are you a teacher on holiday? Dodgy ground if you go and complain. Smile

going · 19/04/2011 10:51

I would say anytime after 8 am on a weekday and 9 am on a weekend is fine.

compo · 19/04/2011 10:52

Yabu
the bin men woke me up at 6am!

nijinsky · 19/04/2011 10:52

9am working day starts. I got annoyed at 7.30am on a Sunday with my neighbour once but your neighbours have possibly booked holidays off to get it done and only using a few hours of the working day probably means they wouldn't have time. Whether or not you've got visitors doesn't really mean they can't decorate their own house!

stillstanding · 19/04/2011 10:52

Would love to agree with you but 9am is completely reasonable. On a weekday I would say 8am would be fine too. Irritating anyway tho - hope they finish quickly!

LaWeasel · 19/04/2011 10:53

It's 9am on a weekday. Maybe they only have one day to get everything done in.

Do you want them to do it an 3am instead?!

TartyMcFarty · 19/04/2011 10:57

YABU! Us teachers tend to take holiday time a bit for granted but it's not one long weekend for everyone.

GoodnightNobody · 19/04/2011 10:57

9am reasonable time imo.

theoldbrigade · 19/04/2011 10:58

Perfectly reasonable.

On a glorious day like today (UK) you don't want to lie about in bed.

TotemPole · 19/04/2011 10:59

Sorry, annoying though it is, after 9 is fine. I must admit, I have a good (totally unreasonable) whinge to myself at banging and hammering at any time of the day.Blush

When we had building works next door to where we lived we were only allowed to complain to the council when they started work before 7am.

I know this because the concrete lorries used to turn up and sit under my window for an hour and more before they started so would frequently be on the phone and then the building site would be told off.

Tried to complain that 7am was too early and it should be 8 but wAs told that I was being unreAsonAble expecting them to start as late as 8... Hmm Did get them to start at 8 on a Saturday I seem to remember.

PassTheChocolateTwiglets · 19/04/2011 11:02

It is horrible, I couldn't agree more - but 8am on weekdays for builders is allowed (though very unpleasant!) When I am doing noisy things myself at home, eg. kids playing outside on trampoline or DIY, my rule is not before 9am on weekdays and Saturdays and not before 10am on Sundays. When we were having work done on our house, I did feel really bad when our builders started at 8am but that's just what they do. Blinking annoying and you have my sympathy but I'm afraid it's just one of those things that we have to put up with!

zipzap · 19/04/2011 11:04

Sorry, meant to say that completely understand and empathise with you but can see that unfortunately 9am was probably quite reasonable for them and you were lucky it wasn't 8...
