To think Australians have a bloody cheek

On a talk radio station today the topic was Australia is deporting an English criminal back to England.
This man moved out 40yrs ago when he was 6 and never took up Australin citizenship and now he has served his prison sentence he is being sent to England
Is this the thin end of the wedge. I hope they dont start sending back the descendants of criminals that the UK sent out

well you said it - think pot, kettle - we are hardly in a position to lecture Australia about sending criminals over here!

MissPaintyOeuf · 18/04/2011 19:41

I have no idea.

But at your name Grin

headfairy · 18/04/2011 19:41

australia can send home anyone they like if they're not australian citizens, or have residency. Their country, their perogative

deemented · 18/04/2011 19:42

But if he never took up Australian citizenship, then he is indeed a British citizen.

MaisyMooCow · 18/04/2011 19:42

We have room for one more, I'm happy to swap with him if not. :)

MikeOxstiff · 18/04/2011 19:45

headfairy
Why cant we send people home then?

Who remembers the man who killed a girl in a hit and run and is not being deported. That story made the news not long ago

Mike that was a shocking story. Didn't he get to stay because he'd fathered children over here.

Can blames the Ozzies for chucking him out if he committed a crime. Pity we can't do the same.

TidyDancer · 18/04/2011 19:48

They did the same with a paedophile a few years ago. And I'm sure many times that don't get reported. It's not great, and it doesn't look good for them, but if the situation was reversed, I'd love to be able to kick an Aussie paedophile or murderer out of the country, and I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that.

giveitago · 18/04/2011 19:51

He's not an Austrial citizen so they can. The fact we don't do the same is our issue.

TethersEnd · 18/04/2011 19:54

Can the Aborigines send all the Australians back for stealing their country?

bubblecoral · 18/04/2011 19:55

I think they have got it spot on in Australia, we should be more like them when it comes to these sorts of issues.

breathing · 18/04/2011 19:55

Tethers you will find it was the British who stole the country and killed the indigenous people.

breathing · 18/04/2011 19:57

Dont you hate it when you make a typo/spelling mistake and it just burns a hole in the screen every time you look at it

TethersEnd · 18/04/2011 19:59

breathing- that's my point Hmm

headfairy · 18/04/2011 19:59

Mike, it may well be that that person you're referring to has British citizenship (even if they weren't born here) or has been granted permenant leave to remain. A much more important question is that we need to be very careful who we give citizenship to.

TethersEnd · 18/04/2011 19:59

Not the typo. That's your point Grin

cairnterrier · 18/04/2011 20:01

I think they've got it spot on, good on 'em.

MaisyMooCow · 18/04/2011 20:03

Surely though, if he has lived there since 6 he has no real roots back here in Blighty? Maybe he should claim asylum there.

molemesseskilledIpom · 18/04/2011 20:44

Under Migration laws they have in Aus, deportation can be a likely outcome if the crime is serious enough.

You have to sign a declaration stating that you understand and will abide by their laws and customs - we had to do this for the visa, although he wouldnt have been old enough to sign the said peice of paper, as an adult the same rules will still apply and that can include anyone granted residency.

They've got it spot on, shame we cant do it here.

Bubbaluv · 19/04/2011 04:23

TehtersEnd the English stole Australia from the Aboriginals.

HipposGoBeserk · 19/04/2011 04:58

"To think Australians have a bloody cheek"

What, all of them??

NunTheWiser · 19/04/2011 06:14

Every country can and does deport non nationals for all sorts of reasons. Some cases get more publicity than others.
Every non national in Australia should be well aware that if they are viewed as a threat to Australia or its people, they risk deportation. It's on every visa renewal form this chap will have had to sign.

Morloth · 19/04/2011 07:08

"To think Australians have a bloody cheek"

It's true we do.

If you don't have Australian citizenship and you commit a crime, you are not our problem, on yer bike basically.

When I was living in the UK if I had committed a crime the UK would have been well within it's rights to deport me.

He, of course had the option of not committing a crime and therefore not risking deportation.

www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/04/16/3193402.htm

I think this is a sad case, his father chose for him not to become a citizen as it would have meant relinquishing british citizenship (not so anymore) while he was 6. That choice has meant that 41 years later he will be sent to a country he does not know while his family remains in Australia.

Raises intresting questions about identitiy and citizenship

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 19/04/2011 07:30

They have the right idea ..... I wish our country would deport everyone who committed serious crimes.

It sucks that the guy is British but if we kicked out people for serious crime, we cow,d get rid of lots!
