to expect DH to wake up when we're having sex?

So, my DH has a habit of trying to have sex with me when he's asleep. He doesn't seem like he's asleep - I even ask him if he's awake and he always says yes. Well, sometimes he is awake, but sometimes it turns out he's actually asleep and he wakes up halfway through or even at the end
Then he acts like I've been interfering with him and I think he feels uncomfortable/embarrased about it.

So AIBU to assume he's awake if he's climbing on top of me etc?

How would you like it if you "sleepwalked"? It's probably quite scary for him.

It's easy to mumble "yes" while asleep - ask him something that requires a coherent sentence.

I have had similar experiences with my DH. As it's often at some ungodly hour of the night, I usually stop him. Does his voice sound normal? If not, I would disregard anything he actually SAYS and assume he's still asleep.

We are both inclined to sleep sex (a dangerous activity when you use condoms as birth control!), however given that he feels upset if he wakes up half way through perhaps it would be a good idea to get up or something and give him a shake to ensure that he really is awake and wanting to have sex?

I think YABU for having sex in the middle of the night. Surely that's time for sleeping!?!?!?!

Just want to add that the confusion arises because more often than not he IS awake, and he likes having sex in the night. During the week he likes to go straight to sleep so he's not tired in the morning, but enjoys a crafty bonus shag in the night when he's not worried about getting to sleep.

Plus it's not like we have a whole lot of sex the rest of the time, so I'm always keen!
