Royal Wedding - again!

There are so many 'I don't care about the Royal Wedding' comments on here. I've just got back from a weekend in London and the enthusiasm for the marathon runners was amazing. The runners had their names on their vests so complete strangers could yell encouragement, and yell they did.

These same people and many thousands more will be cheering for the happy couple a week on Friday and I for one am so excited. Thank god for these people who can always be relied upon to turn out with their Union Jacks and whoops of joy.

So, my first AIBU! I think generally we do care and the negative folk are in the minority.

This thread is in AIBU. Therefore the OP is asking AIBU? To which the resounding reply is 'Yes'.

There are already half a dozen dullard Royal wedding threads. Go and fawn over the bald prince elsewhere, perhaps?

I am looking forward to it! DH is working unfortunately but I am having a few friends over and our village is doing loads of stuff, street party, fancy dress comp, showing it on big screens etc.

I will get dc to sit with me and watch a few mins of the ceremony so I can at least always tell them they watched their King and Queen marry, in the same way that I sat with ds wen Obama was inaugurated.

But most of all, I really can't wait to see her dress!

NoelEdmondshair · 18/04/2011 08:37

So back to the celebration Smile. I hope Kate's dress is stunning, that she wears her lustrous hair down and beams the same happy smile she's been showing since their engagement was announced!

Do you think i've left it a bit late to buy union jacks bunting ? Have Party Pieces got any stock left (that way I'd feel as if i'm contributing to the pot to ay for it too) Grin

nepenthe3 · 18/04/2011 08:52

mamatomany, they are probably giving them away free with the Daily Fail.

Animation · 18/04/2011 08:56

London Town

Megatron · 18/04/2011 08:58

Well I'm really looking forward to it too and I'm not English either. I might even wear a hat. Grin

BiscuitNibbler · 18/04/2011 09:25

I'm looking forward to it - even having a garden party with bunting. I think it will be a day to remember.

KD0706 · 18/04/2011 09:28

mamatomany we bought union jack plates, cups and napkins from party pieces as I thought it was appropriate given the connection. (wonder how much extra business they have received through folk thinking that way!).

But their bunting was fancy stuff at about £30 so I got some cheap plastic stuff from Dartford Market!!

LtEveDallas · 18/04/2011 09:45

I'm looking forward to it because DD cannot wait to see a 'real prince' get married. Although I think she is going to be disappointed when he isn't wearing a crown!

I think an event like this is good for the country as a whole. It brings people together and in general raises the mood.

I remember being very excited as a child when Prince Charles and Lady Diana were married, I think it was the pomp and ceremony of it all.

maighdlin · 18/04/2011 09:53

YANBU some people are just so miserable they can't stand something nice actually happening. yes it will cost a lot of money but in grand scale government terms its only a small amount if it was diverted elsewhere it wouldn't make much of a difference. you have to be a really miserable bastard to not enjoy a wedding and an extra day off. are we supposed to just slog on and all be miserable but things are going a bit shit? the wedding will be a nice distraction and we can't all sit there glum until the economy picks ups and stupid wars are over.

Animation · 18/04/2011 09:57

"you have to be a really miserable bastard to not enjoy a wedding"

Shock Grin
NinkyNonker · 18/04/2011 10:04

I love a pretty dress and a bit of romance. I like them as a couple too. Might not watch the whole thing, if weather is nice might walk into town and see what's happening instead.

breathing · 18/04/2011 10:07

I have no interest in it at all tbh. Im not british either.

grovel · 18/04/2011 10:08

I can't wait for Kate to get pg and come on here.

nepenthe3 · 18/04/2011 10:28

Why is it so hard for people to understand that not watching the wedding does not equate to a miserable existence? I have plenty to be happy about, will probably have a nice day doing something else but Kate and Wills will not factor into that. Quite simple really.

muminthemiddle · 18/04/2011 10:53

I am holding a bbq I have bought royal bunting and flags. My friend is supplying the union jack napkins. Can't wait hope it is a sunny day!

breathing · 18/04/2011 10:55

I just found a "stuff the royal wedding" t shirt my dad would love

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 18/04/2011 11:26

I think some of it is partly down to jealousy.... when William proposed, several hundred thousand hearts across the globe, broke.... My cousin's daughter posted 'I hate HER!', she's not even in the UK. Shock

I wonder if some of the disinterest/uninterest is due to a general apathy and/or envy at something that the general public cannot have?

I'm not a Royalist but am glad of the extra day off. Grin

catchmeifyoucan · 18/04/2011 12:05

I'm looking forward to it! Can't wait to see what everyone wears and the expressions on some faces - fabulous! Will be hunkered down in front of the telly here!
I can quite appreciate the some people don't like all that and will defend to the death their right to say so but some of the negativity and yes, pure hatred, on here has been astonishing! If it's not your cup of tea then just tune out for fuck's sake - don't spread your miserable hate filled snidey little opinions all over MN!

ja9 · 18/04/2011 12:11

here here to op. There's a right bunch of miserable old gits on here Grin.

xstitch · 18/04/2011 12:16

It one thing to not be particularly interested but I have read and heard some really nasty comments about the Royal wedding. Completely unnecessary IMO. I can't see why people can't separate their views on how the country should be run from thinking that a young couple are starting their married life together. I just think that's nice.

Lucyinthepie · 18/04/2011 13:34

"I think some of it is partly down to jealousy.... when William proposed, several hundred thousand hearts across the globe, broke.... My cousin's daughter posted 'I hate HER!', she's not even in the UK. "
Oh, you're having a laugh aren't you?

Whatevs · 18/04/2011 13:48

Yep, I really envy Kate.

It all worked out so well for Diana and Fergie, after all Hmm. Those Windsor boys are such a catch

Animation · 18/04/2011 13:53

Of the two princes I think I would prefer Harry - a bit dangerous and very fanciable actually. Blush
