It's in June and I'm thinking of sending out "Save the date" cards.

We had a fantastic 1st birthday and I'm 50/50 on the upcoming one.

I'm thinking of;

  1. Going the whole hog with Twizzle again + BBQ for the parents;

  2. Having it at his nursery, cakes and party bags for his mates;

  3. Having lunch at a restaurant with close friends and family.

Before I get flamed - I never had a proper birthday as a child and I promised myself I'd always celebrate my kid(s) birthdays.

Why do I want opinions? I suppose just "talking it out" might help

A nice BBQ etc sounds lovely, it'll bs a greatexcuse for one anyway!

Not sure about save the date cards - that's a bit OTT Grin maybe just send out an email/text or mention it when you see people?

Save the Date cards are useful, imho.
Up to you how big a deal you want to make of it. I saved my energy for when they were older & able to figure out what was going on.

goodbyemrschips · 16/04/2011 12:39

We have had big bashes for every party [he is 9 now].

Go for it, save the date is good.......avoids dissappointed both ways.

Merlotmonster · 16/04/2011 12:54

Altinkum...im curious to what the 3 course meal will be !

SolarPanel · 16/04/2011 12:58

I'm not one for the big bashes each year, cake with close family would be fine with me!

I have a friend who organises enormous birthday parties for her very young DC and I feel a bit pressurised to invite her back to something similar when it's not really our thing.

I don't like "save the date" cards, I prefer just mentioning the date in an email/phone call, and sending proper invitations later, but that's for another thread...

I have never heard of 'save the date'. I wouldn't put a 2 yr party as that important-if they can't manage it I'm sure the 2 yr old won't hold it against them!

squeakytoy · 16/04/2011 13:47

are you thinking of doing ONE of those things, or ALL of them Grin

MsToni · 16/04/2011 17:43

Save the date card is for Mums/Dad..

Seems kids attend more parties in summer....?

OP posts:
Firawla · 16/04/2011 19:46

I would do any of those 3 options and/or a special birthday day out for him?
There's nothing wrong with making an effort for young children's birthdays, I know some people think it is OTT but imo its nice, i would not have a problem with save the date cards for 2 yr old bday personally. it's good to know just to keep in mind while making plans?

lljkk · 16/04/2011 19:48

Kids attend the most parties in Oct-Nov period. I don't know why.
Heck, who am I kidding, my kids barely attend parties at all... but definitely a rush in the mid-autumn period, nonetheless.

DD is also 2 in June we're going for family & close friends at home with hopefully (weather permitting) a BBQ. DD probably happier at this age to be home/ in the garden than sat in a restaurant waiting to get down from the table to run around! We think it'll be a bit less stressful too.

I feel the same that her birthdays should be celebrated but feel she's too small yet to have real friends or care who turns up! As long as she can run about & play with toys With her cousins she'll be happy.

Maybe next year we'll do something different.

Good luck deciding!

Will also take cake & fruit to nursery the week after.

microserf · 16/04/2011 21:14

Go for it! we just had 2 parties for my (very spoilt) dd for the same reason.

she has been singing happy birthday to herself all week. Grin

we didn't spoil her with pressies mind, just parties!
