Big news in todays independent.(and elsewhere)

They say 230 cyclists are killed or seriously injured on our
roads every month.

Really? I would like to see those figures broken down to serious injury/death
The report says HGV drivers are often involved.

Cycling is becomming more popular here

lurkerspeaks - well done for getting back in the saddle, that took some guts.

The CTC is well worth joining and when you join you get insured with them for your membership fee so protection for you and others.

The worst accidents I've had were the car that crashed into me at a roundabout - I went over the top of the car, embedded part of the metal in what remained of my front teeth and bashed my knees on landing. Quite mild really, considering what could have happened.

And the one where I was cycling back from uni down a residential street. A driver pulled out right in front of me without seeing me and nearly hit me, I somehow managed to avoid him and stay upright but it was downhill and I'd become unbalanced. The fucker then turned left into a parking space in front of shops and completely finished his job. My legs were a mess, my coursenotes went flying to high heaven (ironically I remember these were English law of tort) and everyone in the shop saw what had happened and came rushing out to help me.

On both occasions, they pleased "I didn't see you". God knows how not, since it was broad daylight and I had on my particularly lurid yellow hi viz cycling helmet at the time.

nijinsky · 16/04/2011 11:33

Mind you, I'd still rather risk accident and injury by cycling than turn into a fat, unfit road rage type person behind the wheel.

I pay 3 lots of road tax, btw. 2 (large) cars and a horsebox.

ivykaty44 · 16/04/2011 11:37

well that's a new one - people paying tax they don't need to - don't let your MP know or they will want everyone doing it Grin

nijinsky · 16/04/2011 11:43

Joking aside, the "you don't pay road tax so we can drive all over you arguement" is a wierd one. Imagine if those who didn't pay higher rate tax were told they had less rights than lower rate or non-tax payers!

ivykaty44 · 16/04/2011 12:18

joking aside - there is no such thing as road tax, so why even bring it in as a red herring?

nijinsky · 16/04/2011 13:15

Because people have mentioned it and the common usage is to refer to road tax, therefore the arguement is relevant subjectively rather than being bogged down in objectivity? Because the analagy is not beyond the average person's comprehension?

masterblaster · 16/04/2011 13:20

Watching f1 the other day, saw all those little cameras on the cars. Cyclists are wearing them to show car users are being dangerous - why not mandate them on cars? They only cost a few quid, and if they were set up to record the last ten minutes of road use, you could help to prove who was right or wrong in any accident, not just cycles vs cars, but car vs pedestrian, truck vs car, other road users hitting each other, etc. People would drive a lot more safely if they knew they were on camera, and cyclists would also know that they were likely to be filmed too in the event of an accident.

The3Bears · 16/04/2011 13:25

My partner was knocked over by a female driver last Aug he was knocked off the bonnet and had shattered his ankle bone she drove off and left him, some people have no decency.

ivykaty44 · 16/04/2011 13:29

It is "vehicle tax" that is the name of the tax as it is a tax on a vehicle and how much emissions it produces - and the logic is the more emissions you give off the more you pay and therefore cyclists don't pay - unless there is something in there for farting whilst cycling. Small vehicles don't pay either if they are in band A, if your vehicle is in band B you pay £20 and so on paying more for your vehicle.

So why keep harping on about a road tax that winston churchill abolished so long ago?

hmm not everyone calls it road tax...

It is entirly up to you what you want to call the vehicle tax fu&king robbin b*stard would be more appropriate imo

i think alot of people would have more respect for cyclists if they didn't so often go over bloody red lights. i am always very careful re cyclists and always make a point of looking out for the buggers hence i didn't kill a girl the other day but bikes can go BLOODY FAST speeding down a pavement at top speed and can kill somone as did recently happen locally to where i live only a few months ago

CoteDAzur · 16/04/2011 14:07

master - There is a little something called "privacy" that prevents you from filming people in their cars 24/7 - where they go, what they do, etc.

CoteDAzur · 16/04/2011 14:14

I don't know if bikes stay in their lane or even next to the sidewalk, but around here they whizz around and in front of cars as they see fit. Stop at a light and you have a few of them passing you and stopping in front of you. Why??? It's not like you will go at their speed thereafter Hmm They cycle side by side chatting as they go snail-paced up a hill and you have to either follow them at 10 km/hr or risk your life overtaking them on winding mountain roads. It is a miracle that so many of them survive every day, and that is only because car drivers are being so careful.

Cyclists have to wear colorful and/or reflective clothing, stay on their side of the road, go in a straight line like everyone else, and for God's sake care about their lives and not take stupid risks.

DrNortherner · 16/04/2011 15:03

I think cyclists take a risk just by getting on their bike and cycling on our roads. Personally, I wouldn't have the balls, especially with the likes of some of the people on this thread on the roads.

I am sickened by some of the attitudes on here. It would never occur to me to get aggitatated by a cyclist. I see one, I slow down, give him space and be patient. That's all it takes.

My dh cycles with a club and is an avid road biker. He always wears high vis, has many lights, and they all wear helmets. If there are alot of them they are often encouraged to ride 2 abreast on country roads - imagine how long it would take a motorist to over take a large group of cyclists all riding single file on winding country roads. Think about that.

In France they love cyclists, they slow right down, and shout encouragement and wave at them.

amythesecond · 16/04/2011 15:09

Cotedazure cyclists should "stay on their side of the road" - that would be the left in England, the same as for cars. Where you are, it would be the rhs of the road.

I looked up the latest available stats - want to know how many people were killed by cyclists in 2009? Zero. That's right, none. There is simply no comparison to the danger created by driving a quarter ton or more car often at high speeds, to riding a bicycle usually well below 20mph. Why do some people not get the distinction?

How can it bother anyone whether or not a cyclist wears a helmet? The only person who might come out of that badly is the cyclist (and there is convincing evidence that you are LESS likely to have an accident without a helmet as car drivers actually realise more clearly that you are vulnerable and treat you with the respect they forget to accord when you are wearing a helmet, as if it would help you if your head went under a wheel.....).

Now talk to me about the motorists I see EVERY DAY on their mobile phones (including HGV drivers) and I would join you in blood boiling anger.

Vehicle tax: it should be abolished and the tax on petrol increased instead to keep Government revenue neutral, and then fewer car drivers would mistake a pollution tax for a payment to drive as if they own the road. The sense of selfish entitlement to the roads by some drivers is staggering - who knew there were so many incredibly thick people on MN (sorry to get judgey, I am not usually, but it simply amazes me, and calling them thick seems generous because the alternative is to brand them evil with their cavalier attitudes towards hurting/killing human beings more vulnerable than themselves).

I am so sorry for all those who themselves or whose family have been hurt by drivers :-( Somehow, I am not quite as concerned by Bubblecoral's DH's car being slightly scratched - even though that is a shame, it's not exactly the same league.

DrNortherner · 16/04/2011 15:16

My dh kicked a wing mirror off a car when out on his bike. It was a club ride, there were about 15 of them on a steep climb on a country road. Dh was at the front of the group. He heard a car approaching far too fast round a bend, saw the cyclists and it had to screech to a halt to stop. Dh said his heart was in his mouth, he thought the car had gone into the back of the group. Instead of slowing right down, it over took with not enough space, forcing 3 riders into a ditch. Dh was so cross as the car past him (the car was honking his horn at them believe it or not Angry) he kicked the wing mirror clean off. Cycling shoes with cleats can be pretty handy......

Just think how close that car was for him to be able to kick its wing mirror.

GabbyLoggon · 16/04/2011 15:28

Cote seems to have got astride the debate effectively. One thing we did not mention yesterday that there are millions of cars on our roads. Cyclists? No comparision in numbersa (obviousy as Cote says cyclists kill hardly anyone. The fast, heavy vehicles do the killing in general )

Motor cyclists are at great risk. many of them clearly love speed and perish on the hot summer roads

Get to Cadwell or some other track to play that game.
