to be just a bit pissed off at my dad?

Mum and dad are having a new carpet laid today in their lounge. The carpet fitters offered to take the old carpet away for a cost, so I offered to put it on Cheapcycle for them, and then Freecycle it if nobody wanted to buy it. (mum & dad don't have a computer). They thought it was a marvellous idea so I put the ad out, and had a buyer all lined up, she was supposed to collect on Monday.

Today the fitters arrived. I rang my dad to ask if, when they lifted the old carpet, they could salvage the underlay as well. Dad informed me that the fitters were cutting the old carpet into strips and were taking it away with them. I said "Can't you ask them to stop?" and he said "I can't talk now" and put the phone down. A few minutes later he rang me back and said that the fitters had just started cutting the carpet up and he said about wanting to keep it, they said they would take it away with them and he just said "oh all right then."

I was a bit Angry because I had spent a couple of hours taking photos, advertising the carpet, replying to people, organising the pick-up, and now I have to go and e-mail the lady who wanted it and tell her that it's all cancelled now. My mum had popped in for a coffee and said "you're not happy are you". Well no I'm not! Then she just kept saying "well it's your dad..." "oh well it doesn't really matter..." "not to worry, worse things happen...".

Apart from anything else I'm a bit worried that an agreement on Cheapcycle might be legally binding.

AIBU to feel really pissed off because my dad couldn't just tell the fitters to stop cutting the poxy carpet?

YAB a bit U.

You say they dont use computers, so they really probably dont understand how freecycle and similar sites work.

Its not worth getting mad at them for tbh.

YANBU

You said you would arrange to get rid of it to save them money, they said 'Yes please' you arrange it and your Dad can't even tell the carpet fitters to stop cutting it up??

Your Mum sounds like mine!

They've seen how the sites work, I've sold things before for them. I'm more irritated at the waste - the carpet was in lovely condition and had lots of years left in it, and now it's going to bloody landfill. Sad

I just e-mailed the lady. Fingers crossed she's understanding about it.

How old are they OP? in my experience its the older generation who need educating about recycling/freecycling - the ones who feel they did their scrimp and save bit during and just after the war, and now in their old age when they are more well off than they ever have been, they see nothing wrong with chucking out whatever they no longer want or need. Just because they can afford new doesn't mean what they are getting rid of is not better than lots of other people have to make do with.

No YANBU. It's not exactly difficult to say "oh we need to keep the old carpet, someone is coming to pick it up" before the fitters get started, is it now? ANd fuck all to do with knowing how computers or freecycle etc. work. What if it had been going to a friend of yours, hmm? Would he still have just let them do it? He's let this lady down by being ineffectual - if it were my Dad, he'd be embarrassed by that.:(

knockinonyerdoor · 15/04/2011 12:54

He just rang me again to say sorry, but once they'd started cutting it up he thought they might as well finish the job and take it away with them.

I think he does feel a bit embarrassed that he didn't say anything to them tbh. Not that he'd ever admit it.

I think what is annoying me the most is that my mum thinks I'm irritated over absolutely nothing. She was the one who kept ringing me reminding me that I needed to go there to take the photos!
