Just because I live in social housing doesn't mean builders can leave my house in a tip!

Appreciate how lucky we are, especially as we got new windows fitted last week.

DH and I went out for the day with DD so the fitters could get on without us in the way.

We were told not to worry about our furniture; they would bring dust sheets and cover everything.

When we got back I was stunned by the state they had left it in. I expected a bit or dirt and dust but this was ridiculous.

  • My front garden was full of glass
  • There were dirty footprints on my couch
  • There was lumps of plaster in DD's cot
  • They have removed glasses from my cupboards and left them lying around the house half empty
  • But the absolute worse thing is that we found 3 big shards of glass on the floor in DD's bedroom. She is 18 months and at that everything in her mouth stage, it makes me feel sick when I think if we hadn't found them she could have put them in her mouth.

I made a complaint to the council and the window company foreman came round with a bunch of flower. I nearly wrapped them around his head. I really feel like we have been treated like second class citizens because we live in social housing.

I would have insisted they came right back and tidied up.

OliPolly · 14/04/2011 19:21

Maybe it happened becuase the builders are just incompetent?

LDNmummy · 14/04/2011 19:23

Had this problem in the past, I think if they did it to you they would do it to anyone, social housing or not. Bloody fuming on your behalf about the glass though! Absolutely disgraceful and incredibly dangerous for you and your DD Angry

NettoSuperstar · 14/04/2011 19:26

That's crap, but no reason to think it's because you live in social housing.
Maybe they are just messy.

LadyOfTheManor · 14/04/2011 19:28

Had it crossed your mind that they were just shit workmen and has nothing to do with the fact you reside in government housing?

RitaMorgan · 14/04/2011 19:33

The thing with it being social housing though is that the builders are doing the work for the council/HA rather than the tenant - so I think they will get away with doing less than if they were working directly for a homeowner.

MaisyMooCow · 14/04/2011 19:45

OP, could it be that we live in the same area as I also live in a HA property and we too are having our windows replaced this week!!

I totally understand where you are coming from. We recently had our roof replaced and the garden was left in a complete state. Nails, screws, slates etc everywhere.

PinkCanary · 14/04/2011 19:56

How horrific!!! So lucky that you found the glass before your DD!

But It's not just you. We own our home and I'm sick to the back teeth of incompetent tradespeople. Am starting to think I have 'mug' tattooed across my forehead.

kaj32 · 14/04/2011 20:10

When my nana had her fire replaced they didn't fit it properly and she had a carbon monoxide leak, luckily the detector worked.

The councils have outsourced the work and gone for the cheapest option. It's a case of paying peanuts and getting criminally incompetent idiots.

According to the local paper about 90 families were affected before they discovered their mistake.

beachfreak · 14/04/2011 21:26

I live in a council flat and we had our windows done a few years back. Whenever we've had council tradesmen, they're always considerate and careful to tidy up after themselves - they bring their own hoover and sometimes it ends up looking cleaner than when they started Blush. After every job they have to give me a customer satisfaction survey and one of the questions is about whether they've cleaned up.

chipmonkey · 14/04/2011 21:45

We live in a nice house that we own ourselves and builders still leave the place in a state.

Glass on your dd's bedroom floor was NOT on though!
