AIBU to be fed up with the royal wedding hype, it's everywhere, the news, shop displays, its way to much and very annoying, not all of us are madly in love with the royals or Kate Middletun, moan over.

OP posts:
Robins · 14/04/2011 11:42

PS Actually, I don't think there is much hype anyway, especially compared to Charles and Di! I am in my forties and remember it well and the Silver Jubilee in 1977. Good times!

Robins · 14/04/2011 11:57

PPS And we only had 3-5 channels then, you can escape the coverage with all the other media stuff readily available!

Badgerwife · 14/04/2011 12:04

I'm right there with you OP, I'm really not interested. I might take a look at what dress Kate is wearing, but it will be front page of all the papers wherever we go for a good while after the event, so I'm not worried about missing it on the day lol

We're moving house that day and hoping to get lots of offers of help from similarly inclined friends... I only hope that there's going to be some music playing on the radio and not a running commentary.

Welshexpat · 14/04/2011 12:20

I was just in the US and frankly people couldn't care less, the royal family is just an achronistic joke to them and it's only fodder for the supermarket celebrity mags. Most Americans couldn't find the UK on a map anyway and don't care.

Unfortunately all we see here on TV is reported by correspondents that are NYC or Washington based and have never travelled more that ten miles from the East Coast.

doley · 14/04/2011 14:14

Robins I agree with you ~spot on :)

Welshexpat not where I am in the US Wink the Royal family is still popular +loved .

I think it is important to remember that it is Williams wedding ~there can't be anyone here that doesn't believe he deserves a wonderful Wedding and marriage :) ?

The Royals are lucky to have money ,we all know that does not bring instant happiness .
Life will be easier for them in some respects ,not all .

doley · 14/04/2011 14:15

I would also like to add, I suspect some of us are a little Envy perhaps ? Wink

GabbyLoggon · 14/04/2011 14:27

Surely Wills finds an 8 year wait for sex a bit orf and niggling.?

Robins · 14/04/2011 14:36

Thanks doley, was scared to read any replies, expecting to be called a racist and other things just because I want to feel a little pride in my country now and again. After all, me England flag soon went in the shed after our dismissal showing in the World cup last year.

But seriously too, I think the Royals are trying to connect with us more than ever and the two young princes I think are doing a good job. Yes they have privileges, but they also have their lives scrutinised and have to have body guards etc so they do pay a price.

Robins · 14/04/2011 14:39

It is also history in the making too though isn't it? Instead of all the miserable stuff for our kids to show their grandkids, something happy!

GabbyLoggon · 14/04/2011 14:47

well, I think we are all "history in the making."

Why do so many people think only famous people matter?

Is it a sort of brainwashing do9wn the ages?

Hammy02 · 14/04/2011 14:49

Gabby-v.true. No person is any more valuable than anyone else.
Old queenie still goes for a shit same as everyone elese!

doley · 14/04/2011 14:51

Again ,totally agree Robins

I remember William's birth ,I think it helps to see them grow up ~I feel more connected with this generation of Royals for that reason I think ?

I have been in the US for 6 years ...I miss all these British traditions (didn't think I would ) ...why shouldn't we have pride in our own country ?

That is one thing the Americans have taught me :)

You are right Robinssomething good and positive for a change !

Insomnia11 · 14/04/2011 14:51

I don't find there is much hype, considering there is only two weeks to go. But then I don't watch TV much, don't go to the shops much and don't read newspapers so I'm practically on Mars. The only way I find out about the hype is by people complaining there is a lot of hype, on the internet or at work.

Robins · 14/04/2011 14:51

Funny thing is, I don't really mind the really anti-monarchy ones, they have always existed and it runs in some families etc, it's general apathy of the inbetweeners I don't get.

Robins · 14/04/2011 14:54

GabbyLoggon

Like Cheryl Cole, Katie Price etc

doley · 14/04/2011 14:56

fedupalready sorry I didn't respond .

There are 'useless' Royals ,I agree with you ~but there is no way that can cancel out the good that many of them do .

The Queen has had the best of everything -agreed ...she has also worked bloody hard all her life .

I know we ALL work hard ,but many Royals do too IMO :)

GabbyLoggon · 14/04/2011 14:57

INSOMNIA....I like your quip that you are "practically on Mars"

We will need to all be up there as the publicity barrage gains momentum

I dont mind just observing the shindig. But I dont want to go on and on.

KATES FROCK? Its a £19.99p job from Primark. Kate has been reading about the recession

madwomanintheattic · 14/04/2011 14:57

lol cadpat - i think i might get up at 3am to watch, tbh. having successfully steered clear of any hype (except for an amusing half an hour in the walmart magazine section where i found it impossible not to leaf through the hilarious display) i think by then i'll need to. (if only to remember the last one - sort of an 'i did this with my parents, oi get out of bed you lot, there's a royal wedding! come and watch it with me!' - make it a family moment to remember so that when my three have their own kids, they can reminisce fondly about the time their dreadful mother got them out of bed in the night to watch historical relics tie the knot. Grin

i know, i know. Blush

GabbyLoggon · 14/04/2011 15:08

It depends what one calls work, doley

doley · 14/04/2011 15:22

GabbyLoggon I understand that :)

Just don't think the Queen ever got a choice did she ?

From that point of view she has worked hard as a Queen can ?

I think there are lazy rich people all over the place the 90's 'it' girls through to the useless celebs all over the tabloids these days ... at least
many of the Royals do what is required of them in their capacity .

Actually ,I have not always felt this way ...I had my "get rid of the lot of them moments " through my youth .
For me (anyway) I think I have had a change of heart over the years .
As I said ,a lot of it (for me) is the new generation of Royals ...I am older than most of the young ones and I see hope .

Sorry,a bit over the top ~hope you can understand what I am trying to say lol :)

GabbyLoggon · 14/04/2011 15:37

The problem is for me: I dont find people who just smile and wave interesting.

Plus their fortunes were inherited and not worked for.

In our hearts we all know what we find when we get behind the scenes of great riches.

So why romanticise things which are anything but romantic when the lid is lifted.?

MrsBananaGrabber · 14/04/2011 15:42

I'm in Canada. I have asked my SIL to send me the tackiest shite she can get her hands on and post it to me. I have Bunting with Will and Kates faces on thats going on my porch, and my tea set and cake stand are coming out, DS's off school and baby dressed in red white and blue and then friends coming round Friday night to toast the newlyweds Wink

doley · 14/04/2011 15:44

I do see your point .

The alternative is not much better though IMO .

Here in the US they turn politicians in to Royalty , I don't think they work any harder than some Royals and yet they did have a choice .

I think the smiles and waving are only a tiny bit of what the Royals really stand for (obviously) so ...I am more leaning toward/and believing in the other work they do for our country .

They do bring in the tourists ~and I am starting to enjoy traditions in my old age lol !

GabbyLoggon · 14/04/2011 15:49

I can see that, Doley.

I think a referendum on the royals would show a majority of older people in favour; and a majority of under 25s not really interested.

diddl · 14/04/2011 15:55

I find that as I get older I lean further away from them.

They want-or so they say, to be "normal"-so you get them having jobs & falling out of nightclubs pissed.

But they obviously get time out of work for Royal duties-fair enough-but also it seems for many exclusive holidays.

They seem (imo) to want it all-to be ordinary, but with the priveledges of Royalty.
