you are not a sausage - you are a piece of polystyrene with an odd taste and you fooled me into thinking it would be OK when the kids had proper porkinson bangers that I should make myself a couple of Quorn sausages to substitute under my onion gravy

I hate you Quorn

Tescos pretend bacon is ok, all others I have tried are rank.

DH (a carnivore) says that all the "meat substitute" stuff is ok as long as you don't expect it to actually taste like a meat. He thinks they need to invent a new term for it & market it as that rather than pretending to be something it's not.

I much prefer tofu, quorn-type stuff is just sooo easy though!

Snorbs · 13/04/2011 10:06

Quorn fake bacon is bloody horrible. It had all the appeal of an Odour-Eater that's been wiped around the inside of a packet of Frazzles.

fedupofnamechanging · 13/04/2011 10:08

If you buy meat hot dogs or mince, it can be filled with all sorts of crap. At least with meat free hot dogs and mince I can give them to the kids safe in the knowledge that they are not eating bits of eyeball or arsehole.

Tesco meat free range is quite nice - the mince has a more 'meaty' texture than the Quorn brand. The Quorn popin' chicken pieces are nice (like KFC) because they are spicy. Also Sainsburys do some nice quorn/meat free things, like Kievs.

I don't understand the purpose of the 'bacon' though, that has the white bits in that are supposed to look like bacon fat. Why would someone think that's a good idea?

Also agree that Linda McCartney sausages are better (although her pies always stick to the foil and are soggy)

notso · 13/04/2011 10:14

If theres one thing worse than Quorn it's Quark, the other 'hero' of Slimming World.
I used to love Linda McCartney stuff and Sosmix sausages when I was vegetarian though.

Olifin · 13/04/2011 10:18

Best thread title ever.

confuseddotcodotuk · 13/04/2011 11:00

I love quorn! But I don't remember eating meat and use quorn for 3-5 of my dinners a week :D

Now Linda Macartney sausages sick

HeadfirstForHalos · 13/04/2011 18:29

Don't ever buy tofu from a regular supermarket! We always get ours from a chinese supermarket, it's a fraction of the price. Even if you don't have one local, it's worth going now and again and stocking up, you can usually get good dates, and you can freeze it.

nenevomito · 13/04/2011 18:33

how can you not like Linda McCartney Sausages confuseddot? How? They are lush!

YouaretooniceNOT · 13/04/2011 19:21

Quorn is vile

YADNBU!

Envy - sick

HeadfirstForHalos · 13/04/2011 19:24

Those new LM sausages are delish too- the italian ones with mozzarella, herbs and mediterranean veggies in. Nom nom nom!

peeriebear · 13/04/2011 19:24

Quorn gives me horrible stomach aches for hours :( I used to be able to eat it years ago but not any more. I like Linda McCartney sausages better anyway.

Clockface · 13/04/2011 20:09

I thought of this thread as I tucked into my Quorn sausages tonight! Grin

They're pretty dry, I must admit. Coleslaw with them helps.

And I had Quark for pudding too, in a meringue with raspberry coulis. I don't like things to be too sweet so I liked it, but I can see that if you liike cream it's not quite the same. Maybe my tasts is a but crap! Oh well! Smile

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 13/04/2011 20:29

I'm really allergic to it. The first time I had it I thought I just had a bug, the second time, as I was puking in the street while trying to get home, I realised it was the wonky fungus.

Avoid!

confuseddotcodotuk · 14/04/2011 00:03

For some reason, even after refreshing my PC didn't recognise the last two pages of this thread Blush

Tofu is amazing, I crumb it and have it with a satay style sauce and rice. Yum :)

babyheave: They have an incredibly weird texture and I get a weird aftertase with them. I'll eat them if I have too (my sisters prefer them over quorn ones so I do eat them at family BBQs and things) but I dislike them.

YouaretooniceNOT: That smiley looks too evil to be ill. There needs to be an actual ill-ish looking smiley on here for these types of discussions! Grin

I've never liked the quorn fillets. As a young teen they just weirded me out. The breaded ones are relatively okay, but I can't eat the plain ones, it's one of the only veggie foods I dislike.

Morrisons (I think? could be co-op) does an awesome 'nut roast' thing in the freezer section. It's a bit untraditional, it has aubergines and courgettes in and barely any nuts, but I love it. I don't remember what they call it. The quorn hams are okay too, though a bit dry. Good for balance in a cheese and mayo sandwich though!
