to be pissed off at Quorn

you are not a sausage - you are a piece of polystyrene with an odd taste and you fooled me into thinking it would be OK when the kids had proper porkinson bangers that I should make myself a couple of Quorn sausages to substitute under my onion gravy

I hate you Quorn

Quorn mince is great in chilli and tacos. Quorn sausages are awful and I'm with Vallhala that Linda McCartney sausages are much, much nicer.

I like quorn, but I've been eating it pretty much since it came out, so have gotten used to it I suppose. Having said that, I don't expect it to taste like meat, I expect it to taste like quorn.

Tofu can fuck right off though.

reikizen · 12/04/2011 18:56

I like Quorn but I don't think of it in any way like meat (not that I can remember, not having eaten meat for 25 years) and am not looking for a meat substitute. I think if you are reluctantly veggie all 'meat substitutes' will taste like shit. Never had the runs with it either Shock

mrsravelstein · 12/04/2011 18:57

it makes me violently ill too - if you google quorn and allergic reaction there is loads of stuff about it, apparently it's very very common, to the extent that, if i remember correctly, there's been some sort of campaign in the states to get them to actually print on the packaging the fact that many many people will be highly allergic to it! (shame, cos i think the mince tastes fine in spag bol/chilli con carne type things)

Clockface · 12/04/2011 18:59

I eat loads of Quorn! Yesterday I cooked a load of Quorn chilli and curry and froze it in portions.

I haven't yet mastered the art of cooking tofu, though. I'm on a low-fat diet and I reckon that the way to get tofu really yummy is to fry it (not an option). Oh well!

Vallhala · 12/04/2011 19:02

"Tofu can fuck right off though."

Thank you so much for ruining my mascara, babyheave. PMSL. :o

And yes, you're right. It can.

jellybeansontoast · 12/04/2011 19:08

To quote something I saw on MN the other day, tofu can 'fuck right off, and then fuck off some more.' It's disgusting. Tastes like soggy newspaper.

NettoSuperstar · 12/04/2011 19:13

I like tofu.
But then it's tofu, not weird fungus which makes my arse spurt liquid poo for hours, and if marinaded tastes good.

earlyriser · 12/04/2011 19:15

oooh i love tofu, straight out of the packet, cold, with sweet chilli sauce. yum. Cannot abide linda mcCartney sausages though. Far too salty.

flyinstar · 12/04/2011 19:16

i find quorn quite salty,so don,t add salt to it when your cooking, tend to add vegetable stock, which contains salt too,so you don,t need to add again, makes great mince and tatties, served with yorkie puds, and your right tofu is grim,grim,grim.....

NettoSuperstar · 12/04/2011 19:20

I press tofu, and then marinade and fry until crispy.
It's lovely.

Ephiny · 12/04/2011 19:21

I like some Quorn products, but not the sausages, there are better veggie sausages you could try. Agree with others that the Linda McCartney ones are nice (though do taste a bit salty to me too), also Cauldron do nice 'Cumberland' or 'Lincolnshire' style sausages.

BalloonSlayer · 12/04/2011 19:23

I like Quorn.

Never does anything to my bottom.

We are having barbecued Quorn casserole with baked potatoes tonight.

I am disturbed by Quorn fillets, however. Does fungus really have bones?

< Worries > I think we should be told.

BalloonSlayer · 12/04/2011 19:24

"also Cauldron do nice 'Cumberland' or 'Lincolnshire' style sausages."

yy they are nice - they also taste exactly the same as each other.

fastedwina · 12/04/2011 19:25

Quite happy to use quorn mince in chilli.

Snorbs · 12/04/2011 19:47

I quite like Quorn. The "chicken" pieces make a nice curry and DD loves the Quorn nuggets. Never had any bad effect on us.

onceamai · 12/04/2011 19:51

Picked it up once and wondered why anybody would buy it when on the next counter there was lovely lean mince, Welsh lamb chops, free range chicken, home made sausages, lamb shanks, pork loin or belly - why?

3CloudydaysBeforeSonRise · 12/04/2011 19:54

I agree the Linda ones are much, much, much nicer and totally different to the Quorn ones. I can't eat their sausages.

But the fake chicken is pretty good, especially the 'southern style' burger ones with breading. In a sandwich my dh (the carnivore) wouldn't know the difference from a chicken burger.

I like the mince for cottage pie or something like that with sauce and other textury foods, but the meatballs are totally tasteless and it feels gross the way they fall into mince in your mouth. Blech.

Vallhala · 12/04/2011 19:57

"Picked it up once and wondered why anybody would buy it when on the next counter there was lovely lean mince, Welsh lamb chops, free range chicken, home made sausages, lamb shanks, pork loin or belly - why?"

Erm... because the other items are pieces of dead animal, perhaps?

onceamai · 12/04/2011 20:05

Well I wouldn't eat live animal Vallhalla and if I wanted to be a veggie I wouldn't eat quorn either.

Sidge · 12/04/2011 20:07

Valhalla apologies, I thought as it was a modified fungus that it was vegan - what makes it not?

TeacupTempest it is partly because it is a fungus that I consider it Beelzebub's droppings - mushrooms are the same Wink

chicletteeth · 12/04/2011 20:09

Tesco vegetarian sausages are ok. My DSC eats them and she is fussy fussy!
Quorn is the work of the devil, can't stand it myself.

JanMorrow · 12/04/2011 20:19

I love quorn but the sausages aren't great

Hatesponge · 12/04/2011 20:23

The sausages aren't that bad. Having said that DS2 cried last time I said we were having them (he prefers the Linda McCartney ones, but they're mich higher in fat than the quorn so I cant have them :( )

We have the fillets, and pieces and mince quite regularly - chilli, curries, bolognese etc. It's ok once you get used to it. Or possibly we have undemanding palates Grin

ConstanceFelicity · 12/04/2011 20:30

I am a meat eater but buy loads of Quorn- The mince is waaaaaay nicer than real mince imo.

splashymcsplash · 12/04/2011 20:31

I love quorn. Never had a problem with diarrhea.

The mince is brill.
