Ds's birthday tomorrow, hadn't even contemplated veg Blush but there will be cupcakes.
And fruit.

Covered in chocolate.

dontcallmepeanut · 12/04/2011 17:24

YANBU!

Although DS would happily polish off half a dozen sausage rolls, and a whole quiche before attempting the cakes :D But, like his wonderful mummy, he usually goes back for extra sweet stuff

MikeRotch · 12/04/2011 17:25

i once did choc spread sarnies in a strange 1970s throwback moment.
they went nuts

worraliberty · 12/04/2011 17:26

All depends on whether they'd likely to make a pavement pizza on the way home Grin

My kids usually make a bee line for the sausage rolls and hover protectively over them..fending off any would be eaters with an evil eye.

HipHopopotomus · 12/04/2011 17:26

YANBU - though DD would be upset if there were NO ham sandwiches! She only ever eats the top of cupcakes but will scoff the ham sarnies.

I do do fruit at parties, but along with chocolates, sweets, cake etc

CheshireDing · 12/04/2011 17:28

Don't they all end up hyper and running around like lunatics then though?

I know my dog did the other day when he ate some sour snakes.

K999 · 12/04/2011 17:32

We went to a party at the weekend and DD2 licked all the icing off ALL the cupcakes when nobody was looking! I was mortified...Grin

BobbiDazzler · 12/04/2011 17:32

Oh the carrot stick and cherry tomato brigade are bores, aren't they?

Insomnia11 · 12/04/2011 17:34

At my kids parties I always do carrot and cucumber sticks, grapes, cherry tomatoes and dips with houmous/cheese/salsa as well as all the cakes, sausage rolls, pizza etc.

I don't make my kids have them, or in any particular order and I don't mind if they go to a party where it really is all carbs and fat but they usually choose to have fruit and veg as well as the other stuff as I would if I was going out for any kind of meal or buffet. I'm certainly not a food Nazi but I am a foodie, not skinny either as I absolutely love my food - a little too much - whether it's lettuce and carrots or chocolate cake and sausage rolls.

K999 · 12/04/2011 17:35

When DD1 was five I threw a party for her. Usual sweets/cakes/sandwiches. One mother asked if I had any pita bread and humus.....i said no the only PiTA we use in this house is the acronym....she never got it! Grin

usualsuspect · 12/04/2011 17:36

Yes ,all on the same plate..crisps ,one sandwich ,cakes, biscuits ..the cakes to be eaten first

Its the kids party law

dickcheeseandthecrackers · 12/04/2011 17:36

Yes it's a sugar/crap fest.
Deal with it.

compo · 12/04/2011 17:37

Ds had a softplay party recently

they served cheese and ham sarnies
crisps
cocktail sausages
sausage rolls
jammy dodgers, chocolate rolls, marshmallow

cakey things, bowls of sweets

NestaFiesta · 12/04/2011 17:37

I always make my DS a light lunch before he goes to a party i.e a cheese sandwich and some fruit juice. After that it's fair game how much he wants to eat at the party. Insomnia- the cherry tomatoes, cucumber etc- does it get eaten?

Last year at DS's party I made 60 mixed sandwiches and they remained untouched! This year I am not making sandwiches at all. The world won't end I'm sure.

compo · 12/04/2011 17:38

And it all got eaten, no carrot sticks and hummus to throw away

pozzled · 12/04/2011 17:40

Like Insomnia I would tend to offer some fruit/veg options at a party, like carrot sticks and a dip. Not because I think they should be forced on kids but because it's what I would enjoy, and it would be the first thing my 2 year old went for. She wouldn't be particularly interested in cakes.

However, YANBU to think that it really doesn't matter what kids eat at a party.

compo · 12/04/2011 17:42

And if you don't bother with grapes nobody moans that they are uncut and unpeeled

Susiewho · 12/04/2011 17:44

Oh, I'm terrible! I don't like it if there isn't 'proper' food on offer too. Some decent sandwiches, humous etc. It seems lazy and (sorry!) chavvy to me, if there's only crap on the table, especially for very young children.

I know this is very unpopular on this thread though! Grin

Clary · 12/04/2011 17:44

Lol @ OP.

DS2's party on Saturday. He has requested:

Pizza
Walkers crisps - 1 packet per person so no arguments
cheese and onion pasties (a speciality of mine)
Cakes
Sweets
raspberries and strawberries
Maybe a bit of cucumber (but let's face it, no-one will eat it)

Have given up on anything else by now (he is 3rd child and 8yo so I have done a lot of parties!)

Well recall a friend some yrs ago for her PFB aged 2 putting out a plate of rocket among the party food! fgs!!

DIp is hideous at a kids' party btw, makes such a mess and they all have their fingers in it

TheCrackFox · 12/04/2011 17:45

Competely agree.

I once went to a 3 yr olds birthday party with my boys (4 and 1) and the food bore mother produced a home made cake (fair enough) but there was no sugar in it and had grated courgettes through it. It was fucking vile. None of the children there took more than one bite.

deaconblue · 12/04/2011 17:45

ds and dd had joint party at the weekend. Ds ate 3 cupcakes, one cocktail sausage. dd ate the decorations off the top of 1 cupcake and about 3 bags' worth of crisps. I was surrounded by parents making their kids eat all their savoury before they were allowed a cake.
I put out tomatoes and cucumber knowing that almost all of it would be untouched. I was right and wish I'd had the balls to not bother with any healthy party stuff at all.

MerryMarigold · 12/04/2011 17:45

Rocket at a kids party

Blu · 12/04/2011 17:48

Savoury food has always been eaten enthusiastically at our children's parties (cheeses slices cut in dalek shapes, dinosaur sandwiches, crisps, mini-burgers, sausages etc etc) alongside sweet stuff, but I would never fuss about making a party tea a balanced tea for an individual child, no.

But children eat fairy cakes. or buns. Not cupcakes!

MerryMarigold · 12/04/2011 17:49

Blu, what's the difference between a fairy cake and a cupcake?

Blu · 12/04/2011 17:52

Cupcakes are a hideous American affectation with piles of squirty icing on top. 'Cupcakes' is an American word.

Fairy cakes or buns are a bit smaller and have a thin layer of icing and some other decorations if wanted, unless they are butterfly cakes in which case they have buttercream in between the 'wings'.

I abhor this cupcake invasion.
