They are awful.

I am very tall and thin and they make me look like a chubby shortarse.

Plus (and this is the real point I think) I remember wearing one walking tipsy up some stairs and trop on the front of the dress, causing me to stumble and headbutt my own knee.

So, if you want to wear one and look like a boho throwback, be careful.

I'm 5'3" and 6 months pregnant - I'll admit they look comfy but I'd look like a gazebo.

Was it the dark-haired woman in a red maxi?

If so, she was quite stunning.

Yes bibbity, we were all posting like mad.

Dark haired woman in red maxi is stunning too, and I think begins with T.

Mama Cass died of a heart attack. Love her music. May she rest in peace.

I love my maxi's!!! But I'll admit I only feel/look good in monsoon ones which cost £80+ and feel/look a nob in primark £6 bargains!!

I have a lovely purple jersey one from Boden which quite a few people commented on last year....but after reading all these comments, maybe it was the colour they liked rather than me in the dress:( The secret to looking good in a jersey one is to wear appropriate underwear i.e. cycling short type pants otherwise they cling cling cling!

GORGEOUSX wrap dresses are adorable! I really want this one for summer (I know the design isn't to everyone's taste but it's right up my street)

Im 5'7 and 12 stone and I look great in a maxi.

Yes I do look a bit fat in it- I am fat. Go figure.

PunkPixie That's gorgeous (great price too) - yes, exactly the sort of dress my friend would wear - she is extremely Jessica Rabbit - size 12 with HH cup - and always looks fab in those sorts of dresses.

I'm a size 12 - C cup and wear long (not flowing) dresses and they look fab on me. Grin

I love Maxi Dresses. They are massive again this year (did not think they would be as they where so in last year)

They are so trendy and comfortable. I have always been complimented when wearing mine. I love waking up when its warm and shoving a nice Maxi Dress on with my tan done and some over sized sun glasses. Makes me feel good and happy Grin

I have horrid legs, am 5' 2" and slim. They look OK on me. I love them because they make me feel nostalgic for my hippy years (yes, am old, too) and they hide a multitude of sins. Don't wear them round the supermarket, though, or to work! Great for hot nights out on holiday (!) or at home, when am trying to look romantic and feel feminine (after bad day at work and no date in prospect). Have 4, which will all go in the suitcase to Portugal... Roll on!

At 34 weeks I refuse to buy any more maternity clothes and my maxi dress is the only thing i can wear that doesnt feel like it is cutting me in half. Admittedly I look like i have shoved a pillow up it, it fits perfectly everywhere with just this HUGE lump at the front! But bollocks, it is comfy and I like it and i will wear it for the rest of the summer too!

That said, it is a slim fitting one, I dont think I could carry off the billowy type, I havent seen anyone who can wear those, fat or thin. I am a size 14 in my non pg state btw, and 5'6"

I agree Op, they look awful on most people Ive seen them on. Im petite and they look bloody stupid on me too!

I'm 5ft7 and size 10-12 and they look like tents on me, all the ones I have tried on seem to gape at the bust horribly (I'm not large of nork but not tiny either) and then accentuate the stomach area. I love the idea of them as I like to hide my legs but haven't found one that works. I did buy one which I wore to a wedding but looking at the photos I regret it - makes me look pregnant. So I will be avoiding, though I do like the look of that Monsoon one linked up the thread.

So YANBU, but also remember the thread last year with the stunning MNer who was wearing one - there is the odd exception to the rule!

I think they can be nice if the fabric is fluid and slinky and the style is right.

I hate hate the billowy flouncy cheap cotton ones. And yes they def DO emphasise weight rather than hide it. I also think they look utterly mad (nice style or not) for everyday wear.

Ok for evening or special occasion; but the school run or Sainsbury's Confused??

Empire-line ones are good for disguising stomachs/hips. If I dare can spare the time later, I'll put one of mine on and send a pic!
