They are awful.

I am very tall and thin and they make me look like a chubby shortarse.

Plus (and this is the real point I think) I remember wearing one walking tipsy up some stairs and trop on the front of the dress, causing me to stumble and headbutt my own knee.

So, if you want to wear one and look like a boho throwback, be careful.

Carmella on Neighbours is wearing one right now and looks luuurverly!

I am short and blonde with big boobs, so would not look lovely. At all.

gordyslovesheep · 11/04/2011 17:47

no yanbu sadly - I even purchased one and wore it Sat - i looked like a short fat middle aged cake topper - it came off quickly!

i am short and middle aged though

HipHopopotomus · 11/04/2011 17:49

I'm tall and podgey with big boobs & they are great!!!!!!!!!

Though this summer I will be BF so what the heck I'm going to wear dress wise I don't know????? Will be seeking help in Style & Beauty soon.

tulpe · 11/04/2011 17:50

YABU.

Agree with TrillianAstra

They are very easy to wear and hide a multitude of sins (cankles, dodgy looking fake tan, can't be arsed to shave your legs, ate too much cake)

The secret is to avoid all billowing, Mama Cass-esque nods to the 60's/70s and go for a slim fitting jersey affair. If your thighs and/or tummy are not up to slim fitting jersey wear then go for something in summery cotton fabric but A-line as opposed to yards and yards of fabric.

Avoid head butting/knee injuries by lifting your skirts in manner of a "laydee" as you climb the stairs Wink Grin

And please, no bras/bra straps on show

dangalf · 11/04/2011 17:51

As a man I think they can look very nice - the wearer does need to be slim though I think and preferably tallish.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/04/2011 17:53

What happens if you happen to be carrying a glass of wine and 'aving ay faaag?

Ok for evening, bad for day time. Never worn one myself though. Am short and would look like I was wearing a nightie.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 11/04/2011 17:56

i have seen several tall, thin, pert-breasted, types carry them off.
but if you were blessed with such a figure why earth would you want to wear a maxi-dress? i'd be pouring myself into a pair of teeny tiny denim cutoffs instead.

BringBackGoingForGold · 11/04/2011 17:57

GetOrf, put fag and glass into one hand, obviously Smile. Or shove fag in mouth, clutch glass in one hand, and grab fistful of skirt with spare hand.

52Girls · 11/04/2011 17:58

"I look amazing in them.

or so everyone i meet, when I'm wearing one, tells me"

Love your humility, girlfriend.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/04/2011 17:59

I can't put fag in mouth wihtout holding it, get blinded by smoke.

Can't put glass in fag hand as am clumsy oaf and end up soaking fag wth wine, waste of fag and wine.

I should have just waited to finish my fag and then commenced elegant flight up stairs.

OP posts:
BringBackGoingForGold · 11/04/2011 18:00

Yeah, finishing the fag is the other option.

CardyMow · 11/04/2011 18:00

OK I dissappear to RL for a couple of weeks being held hostage by velcro baby, and either everyone's namechanged or there's loads of newbies here??!!

On the subject of maxi dresses - don't, just don't, unless you are Elle Macpherson. Which I'm not. I look like a barrel hiding in folds of fabric in them. Which I'm not.

tulpe · 11/04/2011 18:00

I love mine. Although I've never forgotten the description I read somewhere of them making everyone look like a 'dalek in a valence'.

jerURSULAmBuffay · 11/04/2011 18:08

soooo comfy to let all your fat bits wobble freely under though

BringBackGoingForGold · 11/04/2011 18:08

tulpe, you're welcome! Grin

GingerWrath · 11/04/2011 18:13

Just bought my first one to wear for my oh's return home after 4 and a half months away...but as I am 4'11'' I bought it in age 12-13...should have tried it on in the shop....right length, squashes my boobs!

DontGoCurly · 11/04/2011 18:15

They are very comfy. Vair vair cumfy!

52Girls · 11/04/2011 18:17

"They are very comfy. Vair vair cumfy!"

So are Crocs. Doesn't make them look any better.

CrispyTheCrisp · 11/04/2011 18:18

I bought this one recently and I love it. It is quite narrow though and heavier jersey, so no billowing ishooos

BringBackGoingForGold · 11/04/2011 18:26

Oi, 'Crocs' indeed! Maxis are not in the same bracket. I don't mind the billowing thing; I think a loose-fitting dress is much more flattering than something you've squeezed into. 'Skimming' the body is the name of the game! And ideally a maxi should, while concealing a multitude of sins, reveal a bit that you actually like. I have rather dumpy wide hips but a long neck (I think scraggy, others say swanlike, I try to believe them Smile) and I like my shoulders, so a maxi that flows over the hip area but shows neck and shoulders/collarbone is great for me. If you hate your arms but have good norks you could go for a sleeves/deep v-neck combo.

Honestly, there's a maxi for everyone!
