To be Disturbed by this woman in a Burka? ......

I saw a very strange event in Debenhams make-up counter this week-end which on reflection, I found very disturbing.
A woman in a full burka (including her eyes covered in thin veil) came up to the make-up counter with a man (presumably DH). The man then proceeded to ask about foundation for the woman and had a conversation with the sales assistant which rarely included the woman at all (apart from trying on a sample colour on her hand).
I felt so sorry for the poor woman - not only to be forced to wear this ridiculous veil but she wasn't allowed even to chose her own make-up!
I did give the man my best evil looks but he didn't seem to notice - perhaps because I was a woman!! I was too cowardly to say anything.

On the day that France bans the burka I wonder whether you would have said anything?

Lady - What does France's past colonies have anything to do with their currect Burqa ban?

They "dominated" you so now you have the right to wear your Burqa in their country? Err, I don't think so.

Mumcentreplus · 11/04/2011 20:00

So just seeing another woman in a burkha is supressing you?...kinda like me seeing another woman in a belly-top or shorts with arse hanging out?..So if I cannot conform in France I cannot live in France...now that's not controlling is it?Hmm

SparklyCloud · 11/04/2011 20:01

I HATE these garments. They appear threatening when you see someone with just a slit for eyes.
I would like to see them banned here.
Could not give a shit what they are called and whether they are religious or not, its the intimidation of them.
Feel the same when someone with a helmet or balaclava wanders around in public. They should be banned too, unless of course one is actually riding a motorbike at the time Grin

alexpolismum · 11/04/2011 20:01

well, it's their country, they can make whatever laws they like!

YouaretooniceNOT · 11/04/2011 20:01

is that directed at me?

but this is not a country dictated to by Islam...is it?

alexpolismum · 11/04/2011 20:02

Yes, SparklyCloud, I dislike balaclavas too

YouaretooniceNOT · 11/04/2011 20:02

OK deny it then doesn't make it less real

CoteDAzur · 11/04/2011 20:02

The Muslim women you knew were oppressed.

Not Muslim women in general, everywhere in the world.

gordyslovesheep · 11/04/2011 20:03

this isn't a country dictated to by anyone or thing though - it's a democracy and we ALL have freedom of choice

alexpolismum · 11/04/2011 20:03

no, it was directed at Mumcentreplus. I meant the French can make whatever laws they like, and if they wish to ban the burqua, well, it's their society, they can govern it however they like.

Mumcentreplus · 11/04/2011 20:04

I don't give a shit what someone wears tbh..

gordyslovesheep · 11/04/2011 20:05

but French Muslims are citizens to are they not - what about them?

alexpolismum · 11/04/2011 20:06

I do feel sorry for some of the Muslim women where I live, though. Married off at 15 or 16, not finishing school. It seems such a shame for them.

alexpolismum · 11/04/2011 20:07

that's the nature of a modern democracy, gordy, The majority rules. And French Muslims are a minority.

Mumcentreplus · 11/04/2011 20:08

I think it's rich to force someone to wear or show something they do not want to show and then say you are not controlling..you ARE..actually you are worse because you are a hypocrite...

CoteDAzur · 11/04/2011 20:08

Mumcentreplus - Have I said I am "suppressed" by seeing a woman in a burqa? No. Why are you talking like I did?

And yes, you should not expect to be able to comfortably live in a place where your way of life is considered abhorrent. If one day you take up cannibalism, I dare say you might have to move to a place where that practice is tolerated.

squeakytoy · 11/04/2011 20:08

This thread is absolutely fucking hilarious.. it really is...

I wear a bra because I do not want to walk around like some saggy titted slob... not because I feel forced to do so by anyone, such as a man.

I wear heels because I, yes thats me, not any other fucker, want to. Because I like to take pride in my appearance, and it is because what I want to do.

I wear make up, because I want to.

alexpolismum · 11/04/2011 20:09

Cote - "you should not expect to be able to comfortably live in a place where your way of life is considered abhorrent." Very nicely put. I couldn't agree more.

gordyslovesheep · 11/04/2011 20:10

ah so it's okay to oppress minority groups - okay then .... but not women? understood Grin

Squeaky do you not think those exact same sentiments can apply to women in Burkas?

CoteDAzur · 11/04/2011 20:10

There are many French Muslims who applaud the ban on the burqa. It is a very small part of the Muslim community in France who wear the burqa.

alexpolismum · 11/04/2011 20:11

Does anyone else think that the OP is a journalist? Either that or it's one hell of a coincidence that she 'happened' to see a burqua-clad woman out and about on the very day the ban came into force in France...

gordyslovesheep · 11/04/2011 20:12

bet the next idea they have is to make gay people wear Pink Triangles .... hm and how about some yellow stars ....

you allow one minority to be treated like this - and the French Governments treatment of Roma people as well - there will be no one left to defend you

it's vile, racist and oppressive

alexpolismum · 11/04/2011 20:12

I didn't say it was ok to oppress minority groups, but it does happen. Anyway, I do not consider the burqua ban to be an oppression of a minority group.

Mumcentreplus · 11/04/2011 20:13

Cote I wasn't actually talking directly to you..so don't take it personally.it's not about you..did you say that?..

wubblybubbly · 11/04/2011 20:13

Squeaky you don't like it when someone questions whether you freely choose your own wardrobe? It sounds demeaning, doesn't it. We all know that it's only muslim women who are denied freewill to pick an outfit.
