Oh I al loving everyone describing their judgy pants.

Roffle at the navy blue pleated slacks with thin plastic belt. Grin

My own judgy pants are beige and very high waisted (I can hoik them up under my bust), with a belt and a pie-crust frill coming up from behind the belt for extra height.

"The average American has no idea what "fanny" means in British English. How could we? It's not the type of thing that comes up in casual conversation, is it?"

Quite. It's within my lifetime that there was similar confusion over the word "fag" - i.e. slang for cigarette in British English but offensive term for homosexual in American English.

My MIL calls trousers pants. She is from The North West. It makes me shudder. Pants are big knickers, or mens undergarments.

Tee2072 · 11/04/2011 07:06

DoubleNegativePanda I would have to disagree. Fanny is often used to refer to a person's bottom where I grew up, in New England. I still catch myself saying to my son 'Move your fanny'.

And there is nothing wrong with the word panties.

I am however absolutely Hmm at the number of you who actually have visualized your judgey pants. How odd.

Because why bother? You don't all actually have judgey pants you run and put on when being judgey, do you?

starcuntmole · 11/04/2011 07:19

It wasn't til I moved to Lancashire that I realised there are a whole collection of weirdos people that refer to the long trouser as pants whilst still claiming UK nationality. This is clearly wrong, and as a member of the teaching profession I am doing my best to rectify it, but could explain confusion in OP. They have to be underwear, else how would you have them on all the time in case of judging emergency?

MikeRotch · 11/04/2011 07:22

It's a naff expression. Will never use. Users sound about 4 when they do so. gavel

I am originally from Lancashire and am not a weirdo call trousers pants still... :)

Goblinchild · 11/04/2011 08:02

Where I lived in Lancashire, they used 'trolleys' to mean underpants.
Never heard that before or since.

MrsChemist · 11/04/2011 08:10

Lancashire (ish) here and trousers and pants are interchangeable to me. I hadn't realised I was committing such a MN faux pas.

Easterfeaster · 11/04/2011 08:19

Pants are knickers here too iyswim
but not where I grew up, that would have been troosers. Grin

Antidote · 11/04/2011 08:20

How weird, I had assumed that everyone was referring to their large, sensible, plain white cotton pants (aka knickers) that they purchased during the latter stages of pregnancy and wore after giving birth!

Not literally obviously. I had just envisaged my big 'mummy' pants as my judgy pants, seeing as the timing fitted.....

Easterfeaster · 11/04/2011 08:23

Antidote Those pants are known as 'elephant' pants in our house

Bubbaluv · 11/04/2011 08:36

English website so therefore I assumed an English definition of pants despite the fact that in Aus pants = trousers.
Underwear here are underpants, undies and various other names, but not pants.
Insert1x50p - in Aus fag means both cigarette and a derogatory term for homosexual men - usually the context sorts that one out though Grin

tallwivglasses · 11/04/2011 10:16

In Newcastle there are items known as 'dress pants' which means smart trousers Confused

My judgy pants are pink, high-waisted long johns like my granny usd to wear.

How long have judgy pants been around on mn?

ZombieComforts · 11/04/2011 12:36

tallwivglasses I have the same judgy pants. They're flesh-coloured with a tummy panel too.

ZombieComforts · 11/04/2011 14:07

psammead are you forrin or wot?

OP posts:
GwendolineMaryLacey · 11/04/2011 14:10

So am I the only one with judgypants in the outside? Maybe that's why the mothers at pre-school don't talk to me :o

Psammead · 11/04/2011 14:55

Not forrin. Just odd, appaently.

This revelation has changed everything [shocked]

Psammead · 11/04/2011 14:58

My judgey pants are dark brown old lady slacks with a shiney, thin maroon belt.
