we say pants for knickers (girls and boys) in this house
my friend (from sa) says panties, which I find very amusing
yanks say pants for trousers but they also say fanny for arse?

DontGoCurly · 10/04/2011 23:19

I prefer to think of them as fancy Judgy pantalooons

animula · 10/04/2011 23:20

Isn't it only Americans who use "pants" for "trousers"?

YouaretooniceNOT · 10/04/2011 23:20

Boxers/pants for boys
Knickers for girls

I hate i mean loathe the word PANTIES - just incase you were wondering - gross.

YouaretooniceNOT · 10/04/2011 23:21

Trousers what you wear on legs never pants - that's rude.

blackeyedsusan · 10/04/2011 23:24

judgy pants are massively bigger than ordinary pants (underwear) tight too, and mine a re a fetching beige psuedo skin colour with big wide elastic. they come up so high i am contemplating cutting arm holes in them, but oh boy are they warm in winter, not so good for summer though.

so what are your judgy pants like?

YouaretooniceNOT · 10/04/2011 23:26

Pants will always refer to undergarments,

TeddyMcardle · 10/04/2011 23:45

Another vote for pantaloons.

Gavel.

What blackeyed said.

Pants are both trousers and underpants in Australia, for some reason. Panties is a dirty old man word.

QueeferSutherland · 10/04/2011 23:54

at panties. It's up there with "titties" in my Worst Words in the World list.

My judgy pants, (or knickers, if you will), are big, faded pink and frilly too. And nylon. They're not nice.

kickassangel · 10/04/2011 23:58

i think mine are a pair of tartan pantaloons, or clown-like trousers - they fit OVER any other jeans etc, right up to my bustline. which is conveniently just where i cross my arms before doing the cats bum face.

YouaretooniceNOT · 11/04/2011 00:04

My sons' teacher gives me a cats bum face sometimes..

Mumcentreplus · 11/04/2011 00:04

Judgey pants are huge in various colours with the words 'Judgey' in capital letters, embroidered on the back...in red..(thought everyone knew this) Hmm Grin

I am quite sleepy so I may have got this wrong. If by "yanks" you mean Americans (and we only consider people from the northeast coast to be yankees) than you are incorrect. Most of the US calls trousers "pants" but I have yet to hear anyone ever say the word "fanny" except when saying "fannypack" and that is laughable in itself.

Fanny is a most hideous word. Much worse than panties IMO.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 11/04/2011 03:23

We wear pants under our clothes in this house, never knickers or panties but for some reason my judgy pants are navy blue M&S straight legged trousers with pleats at the front and a little thin plastic belt. Don't know why...

Goodynuff · 11/04/2011 05:08

Canadian perspective:
Underwear, panties, underbritches, boxers, briefs=underneath
Jeans, pants, trousers= on the surface
(Panties is certainly not a weird, gross or creepy word here, but it only refers to women/girls underwear, never for males)
creepy terms=gitch, banana hammock, butt floss
fanny= an old lady way of saying bum, as in "get off your fanny and help me with these dishes"
hth Grin

thumbwitch · 11/04/2011 05:18

panties is a disgusting word, it really is So I guess it is also associated in my mind with DOMs sniffing lacy panty type things

judgeypants are knickers here, with bloomer-style legs and high waists.
DH and most of the Aussies here seem to use pants to refer to shorts/trousers; but will use them for undies as well just to confuse.

fannypack is a ludicrous word, considering the alternative meaning in the UK and elsewhere. Although bumbag isn't much better - but at least it's anatomically obvious, isn't it?

The average American has no idea what "fanny" means in British English. How could we? It's not the type of thing that comes up in casual conversation, is it?

Goodynuff · 11/04/2011 05:31

I just think it is funny how panties is a gross word, it would be the same as if we thought "shirt" was gross Grin here it just a name, without the connotations.
