... when I see pre-school children with rotten/rotting teeth?

OP posts:
x2boys · 10/04/2011 09:13

well if antibiotics can cause tooth decay then my eleven month old baby does nt have much hope has been on antibiotics since he was two days old for a kidney reflux problem and will continue to be on it untill he is 5 yo to prevent scarring but then i would prefer a few rotten milk teeth then a possible kidney transplant when he is an adult

GandTiceandaslice · 10/04/2011 10:11

I've got marking on my adult teeth from stuff my mother took when pg with me.
It's not as cut & dried as you would like to think with teeth decay.

LadyOfTheManor · 10/04/2011 10:22

YANBU. Ask any dentist and she/he will tell you that rotten teeth and cavities are caused by the same few things;

Eating crap
Sugary drinks
Crisps (are worse that sweets as they stick in your teeth)
Not regularly brushing
Drinking squash

Obviously you'll get the defensive parents on here claiming it's none of these things, but ask a dentist.

DollyTwat · 10/04/2011 10:32

I dO feel less mortified reading this thread, seems it's very common.
So thanks op, not just for apologizing, but for bringing it into the open.

DollyTwat · 10/04/2011 10:34

That's not what my dentist told me about my ds2 lady

So I think you are wrong and I'll informed

At least the op had the decency to apologise

LadyOfTheManor · 10/04/2011 10:36

You are welcome to think what you like :)

DollyTwat · 10/04/2011 10:40

I will take the advice of my dentist thankyou
I know what caused the enamel to not form properly on my ds2's teeth

Are you a dentist?

bronze · 10/04/2011 10:41

You'll notice most prems have dodgy looking teeth. It is definitely the abs.

Don't feel bad, you said sorry. Most of us don't know these things until it happens to us or our children

Sirzy · 10/04/2011 10:42

I had a lot of antibiotics when I was younger (infected excema and ear infections) and as a result I had a lot of problems with my first teeth needed loads of fillings etc etc. Thankfully though my adult teeth all came through fine!!

Oh and Lady my dentist always put the trouble I had down to the antibiotics I had.

LadyOfTheManor · 10/04/2011 10:42

What if I were? I have not a single filling my mouth and wasn't introduced to processed shit bad food and drink until I was about 18 when I helped myself only to realise it was all disgusting.

Ds's teeth are perfect too.

DollyTwat · 10/04/2011 10:46

Give yourself a sticker Lady

My children don't have sweets, sugary drinks or processed food
Ds1's teeth are perfect
Ds2 had a severe trauma to his mouth as a baby

Birdsgottafly · 10/04/2011 10:48

LOTM- the question was asked because if you were a dentist spouting that rubbish you would be told to retrain. Medicines and medical trea\tments can be the cause of bad teeth (they can also destroy bones). This can happen at any time of life. Medical conditions such as Crohns(but lots of others were the body does not process or absorb nutrients) can also cause tooth (and bone) decay.

LadyWithNoManors · 10/04/2011 10:51

LadyOfTheManor - why do you have to be such a cow?

Birdsgottafly · 10/04/2011 10:52

Too many people on here are amateur doctors/neurologists/psychiatrists/pschologists (add what what you want to the list), even after being educated by other posters and judge because of it.

Not you OP as you said you did not realise.

DaisySteiner · 10/04/2011 10:55

And fruit juice, raw fruit and dried fruit LOTM. So although I thought I was doing the right thing by never letting anything with artificial sugar pass my ds1's lips and brushing his teeth obsessively, he sadly had 2 fillings by the time he was 4. What a shit mother I must be.

LadyOfTheManor · 10/04/2011 10:56

Oh yes, fruit and fruit juice is terrible for teeth.

LadyOfTheManor · 10/04/2011 10:56

*in excess

DaisySteiner · 10/04/2011 10:57

Well I'll go and flagellate myself. Lucky for your kids that you are perfect.

DaisySteiner · 10/04/2011 11:00

I'll suggest to my friend (max-fax consultant) who has a child with a couple of fillings that she does the same.

TandB · 10/04/2011 11:02

YABU
I had a large number of anesthetics as a small child - operations to correct foot defect. I had a reaction to them and my hair turned brittle and eventually fell out and grew back, and my nails and teeth also became brittle. All my back teeth came through needing immediate fillings.

LadyOfTheManor · 10/04/2011 11:03

How is the fact that she flogs make up relevant? But yes, do tell her.

DollyTwat · 10/04/2011 11:05

What do you say to all the people on here that have had reactions to medicine lotm?
are they making it up?

LadyOfTheManor · 10/04/2011 11:07

I'm bored of you now.

bronze · 10/04/2011 11:08

LotM

I too didn't get given shit. Drinks were milk and water. We never had crisps (really bad for teeth) or anything like that

I have very very weak teeth. I have inherited them from my parents. Luckily my children seem to have inherited their dhs strong teeth with exception of dd who was prem. sometimes there is not much you can do. You can help prevent but can't stop these things

DaisySteiner · 10/04/2011 11:08

LOL at acting as though you are a dental expert and not knowing what a max-fax consultant is.
