I've ordered a bike from Debenhams Direct. I've never ordered from them before. I placed the order Tuesday last week (29/03). I was given a delivery date of Wednesday this week (06/04), it wasn't despatched because they were waiting for a delivery from the manufacturer. They said it would be delivered today, but it still hasn't been despatched. They've said it will be delivered as soon as they have stock.

Their website still says the bike is in stock. They invoiced me earlier this week. AIBU that if it says "in stock" that it should be in stock and should have been despatched by now?

yanbu. I work in customer serices for a company that says and does the same. What happens is either:

A. you placed an order, the order is actioned the next day. It may have been that when you placed the order the item was in stock but as it isnt actioned until the following day the last remaining one may have been either brought or was sent out and so your order could not be fufilled.

B. companies do not keep everything in stock, there would be too much. Often when they say its in stock what they mean is the supplier has it in stock and they can get it sent out easily within 2 days or so. Then what happens is the supplier is awaiting for a shipment and dousnt have the stock they should so your order gets held. Sometimes they have probs getting cargo through shipment if there is a delay anywhere in shipping (there often is).

c. They have said they have stuff in stock when they know they dont but know they are getting it soon and hope you will hold on and they can push it through.

d. They haent updated their stock availability on the website yet and are showing outdated information-blame the it department.

its all shit.

YANBU.

Very annoying and happens all the time, esp in Ikea!

AxisofEvil · 08/04/2011 11:26

YANBU. There is an online company I've used a few times that does this EVERY TIME. They show everything as available and then they send you 1 item out of the 4 you ordered and the rest follow over the course of the next month! I'm going to have to find another supplier for these goods going forward.

YANBU. I'd be mad if they'd taken my payment before they were in a position to fulfill the order.

they shouldnt take payment until the order is dispatched and also they should hold the whole order until every item is available to be dispatched, they should call you to let you know this

About 10 days ago I ordered perfume for DW's birthday from perfume999.co.uk. Today they E-mailed me to the effect that the stock arrived damaged and it was "not possible" to get more.

Apparently it's now good business practice for companies to take orders in good faith and decide later whether they can be bothered to fulfil them or not.

Sorry OP no YANBU.

I had exactly the same problem with Debenhams Direct for my DD's main 1st birthday present Angry Found out after chasing it the day after it should have been delivered that it wasn't in stock and wouldn't be until 3 days after her birthday. Eventually had it delivered 17 days after her birthday......

I searched high and low for it elsewhere but no-one else had it in stock. You could try that and cancel the order if you find it elsewhere?
