I have just remembered there used to be a shop in Oxford that sold Japanese stuff, called 'Tsunami'.

AIBU to think that is a bit like calling a shop 'Nuclear holocaust' or 'Massive cholera outbreak'?

I wonder if it is still there. It used to be on Gloucester Green, for anyone who has been there recently.

There's a hardware store near me that sells brooms etc - it's called S&M Supplies.

Tsunami is the Japanese word for tidal wave, or wave train. Although currently topical given the terrible disasters in recent times I think it's probably no more inappropriate than calling a bar or club hurricane, cyclone or similar.

There used to be a hat shop called 'Krakatoa' in Brighton.

There's a hairdresser in my area called 'Hair Flick'. I'm not saying it's not a clever play on words but come on, naming your shop after a Nazi? Shock

There are some sports stores in London that sell Nike et-al and the name of the store is "Sweatshop".

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 04/04/2011 18:51

actually that just reminded me of the German company that made some running shoes called Zyklon. Inside German-speaking countries that just meant 'cyclone' but people who didn't speak German immediately thought of Zyklon B.

BikeRunSki · 04/04/2011 19:13

I call the remote control Heir Flick.

Cymar · 04/04/2011 19:13

Aye Cook, heard about that wee bakery and, IIRC, did some of the residents sign a petition to get the owners to change the name, because they thought it was vulgar and brought down the tone of the village?
