To ask what is so wrong with 'lol'??

I've been reading a few threads tonight and so many of them go off the point to complain about someone saying 'lol'

Doesn't it sometimes help with the tone of what someone is trying to say in what can often be quite heated threads?

And the whole 'it's so netmums' thing... Really? You're not rival high schools!! LOL (see?)

What's the big deal??

It isn't a real word.

cocolepew · 01/04/2011 20:18

I don't understand it, is it laugh out loud or lots of laughs?

Anythingwithagiraffeonit · 01/04/2011 20:19

Neither are emoticons.

Sorry but I hate it. And ROFL, LMAO and anything similar, they make me cringe. I know nothing about netmums so can't comment on that.

said · 01/04/2011 20:19

Isn't it when it's used randomly and inappropriatelt that it irks?

I got up lol and went to the bathroom lol. Had a shower lol and then brushed my teeth lol. Had a row with dh lol and then went to work lol

Ismene · 01/04/2011 20:20

Well on my scale it doesn't reach the heights of 'O-M-G!'.

It may not be a real word, but it is an abbreviation listed in the Oxford dictionary.

worraliberty · 01/04/2011 20:20

I have no idea.

I've been using LOL and LMAO for as long as I've been using the internet (about 20 years)

It does annoy some people but then again, all this DS, DD, DH and so on bugs the shit out of me...so it's horses for courses Grin

ShirleyKnot · 01/04/2011 20:20

It. Is. Shit.

hermioneweasley · 01/04/2011 20:20

not at all. this is a t'interweb forum and 'lol' is a recognised digital phrase. I have just discovered the phrase "doing it for the lulz" and am trying to work it into every day conversation.

NinkyNonker · 01/04/2011 20:21

But an emoticon isn't meant to be a word? I just hate text speak etc.

squeakytoy · 01/04/2011 20:22

It doesnt bother me. I use it, and I dont give a toss if it is mumsnetty or not Grin

LOL!

hecate · 01/04/2011 20:24

Well, for a start it is used as punctuation.

I went to the seaside lol we had icecream lol I rode a donkey lol

It is also used when talking about things that are not funny at all.

I seriously doubt that the person is actually laughing when they add lol to the end of sentences. If they are, then they are very odd. r u ok, hun, I'm having a cup of tea, lol.

If asking someone if they are ok and telling them you are having a cuppa makes you laugh out loud, you need medication.

pointydog · 01/04/2011 20:24

I don't mind lol at all.

And mnetters who use dh and dc and all that crap really can't complain.

I'm not quite sure where to start. So I'll keep it brief. "LOL" is an asinine, pointless, banal and fuckwitted acronym that is generally used as a feeble, and inappropriate attempt to defuse downright rudeness or to accompany comments of quite sublime stupidity.

It purports to stand for "Laughing Out Loud" but since nobody ever IS doing that thing, it is high time it was banned. Or at the very least, attract a bolt of lightning that would strike the keyboard of persistent lolling offenders.

Not that I feel strongly about it, of course.

Also. You can use lol all you like. Use away. Enjoy.

I will judge you.

Particles · 01/04/2011 20:31

I have a nervous laugh which very much punctuates my sentences in real life. This is an issue, dammit!

I am 48 and an utterly pedantic old gimmer.

I hate textspeak, hun, preggy, preggo, hubby etc

... but have no problem with lol, so long as it is meant as an abbreviation for laugh out loud. Infact I much prefer it to the Mumsnet standard of "spat tea all over my keyboard".

I hate lol as mindless punctuation though.

I do sometimes laugh out loud at threads on Mumsnet. Maybe I should skulk off to join that other thread about realising you need to get a life...

BitOfFun · 01/04/2011 20:33

It doesn't give me the rage or anything, when indicating that you find something more than moderately amusing. But when used as punctuation, or apropos of nothing, my brain starts to bleed with suppressed fury. Almost.

ShirleyKnot · 01/04/2011 20:33

Bibbity!

You don't look a day over 30!
