To ask what is so wrong with 'lol'??

I've been reading a few threads tonight and so many of them go off the point to complain about someone saying 'lol'

Doesn't it sometimes help with the tone of what someone is trying to say in what can often be quite heated threads?

And the whole 'it's so netmums' thing... Really? You're not rival high schools!! LOL (see?)

What's the big deal??

I do laugh out loud at some of the posters on here, but I never roll on the floor or piss myself. I don't like lol either, but if someone really makes you laugh what do you write. I quite like the big grin smiley, but it's not a laugh is it, it's a smile? And saying "that was really funny op sounds a bit creepy.
So, dunno really.Smile

Tee2072 · 01/04/2011 20:37

When it is used as punctuation it is annoying. Otherwise I find it ignorable.

Pagwatch · 01/04/2011 20:38

It doesn't bother me really , excerpt when used in the manner of those who punctuate sentences with 'you know' or ' like'... I was like standing there you know and he was like wow....

But I fucking hate it when used by some twat being vile... 'fat people are munters lol'. That sort of thing.

bibbitybobbityhat · 01/04/2011 20:39

Bless you Shirley. Btw my gin and tonic requires refreshing.

Pagwatch · 01/04/2011 20:40

Bibbity is a spring chicken lol..

(actually you are a spring chicken bib . To me you are )

bibbitybobbityhat · 01/04/2011 20:40

(gosh, we're all saying the same thing)

Particles · 01/04/2011 20:41

Ah, I haven't often had cause to roll on the floor or piss myself or indeed laugh my fucking arse off. If I ever found myself in that situation I'm afraid I would have to log off altogether, having come to the realisation that things had Gone Too Far.

ShirleyKnot · 01/04/2011 20:42

Right away ma'am.

On my facebook, a member of my family, who I love, often puts things like "I just cut my finger on a breadknife, in a&e so phone off lol"

Stop it.

BosomForAPillow · 01/04/2011 20:46

I think a few people might think it means "Lots of love" when they put it at the end of texts.

My mum wrote something along the lines of "Safe flight LOL" to my sister when she was really worried about flying and it turned out she thought it was a loving sign off. Until then, nobody had thought to ask her why pretty much every text ended with LOL.

LOL!

breatheslowly · 01/04/2011 20:52

I just don't believe that anyone is laughing out loud when they type lol. If people insist on an abbreviation for something humorous then I suggest:

TIMA - that is mildly amusing
QF - quite funny
MMSS - made me smile slightly

Then if something does make you laugh out loud we need something else:

ADLOL - actually did laugh out loud.

BitOfFun · 01/04/2011 20:54

My mum does disturbing txtspk on the phone. I cringe every time she writes 'cum', but I can't bring myself to tell her.

Pagwatch · 01/04/2011 20:56

Hahaha at cum Grin

Dh used to think that ds1 was lovely to put lots of love in his texts. It took me ages to tell him.
But then we had the whole anus anus debacle. Por dh

Pagwatch · 01/04/2011 20:57

Actually did lol at adalbow

As an abbreviation to indicate amusement it's ok, but I don't personally like it. As punctuation it is annoying enough to make me want to rip peoples phones out of their hands and smack them round the head with wet mackerel.

usualsuspect · 01/04/2011 21:09

I like to lol

GreenEyesandHam · 01/04/2011 21:09

Ah see I've tried and tried and tried and still can't be arsed to give a shit about it

ChaosTrulyReigns · 01/04/2011 21:18

Hello anythingwithagiraffeonit.

Let me introduce myself - I'm Chaos, an unashamed lolbasher.

I'm not a nasty intolerant harridan picking on a sweet ickle cutesy acronym, I am just exasperated by its ubiquity.

[sigh]

I think it's indicative of an unimaginative brain really, are you really laughing out loud, or is it just a unconsidered disfluency in typing?

If it is actually a typed representation of a physical reaction then that's completely acceptable and I empathise totally and frequently with that sentiment.

If it's just a fucking punctuation mark, it becomes tedious to read and actually, to me, spoils the rest of what may be a valid comment.

My true feelings regarding this situation, is IT'S SUCH A SAD SHAME.

Vocabulary improvement and a smidgen of forethought equates to possibly, a comment worth reading.

grafenstolz · 01/04/2011 21:20

LOLOL if you have teenagers you use lol in convos. Also 'sad face'.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 01/04/2011 21:23

Sorry that came across as harsh - that wasn't aimed at you giraffes, just the copious lol contingent. Of which I, of course, do not know whether you belong.

worraliberty · 01/04/2011 21:37

Jesus it's just another of the hundreds of acronyms used on this forum.

usualsuspect · 01/04/2011 21:40

Its easy to type
lol

pinksmarties · 01/04/2011 22:54

Gloriasmut, may I nominate your post as the 'post of the week'.... that was brilliant Smile

I can't believe that anyone over 16 writes it.....I actually can't type it, my fingers won't do it, that's how much I hate it. It's for kids who don't know any better.
