to think high school students shouldn't be smoking outside the school gates.

I went to collect DS from an after school detention today. He usually comes home on the school bus.

I arrive 20 mins early, pull up outside the school and notice a group of boys and girls hanging around the main gates, some of whom are smoking.

I am Shock Shock Shock

It was about 4pm, a time I imagine teachers to be leaving the school. (Some cars did leave while I was there, but I've no idea who was in them)

Then this group wandered off, and three girls came out of school, sat on the grass verge and lit up. Shock

Now, call me old...but in my day even the hardest pupils would not have dared smoke out side the school gates in school uniform. And we didn't have regular school detentions or the cane (I'm not that old) but we would have been in serious trouble ie our parents would have been informed.

Obviously none of these students were in 6th form, as they were all in uniform. I am going to bring this up with the school, as I think it's not on....just wanted to check 6how^ unreasonable I'm being first.

For what it's worth, I really don't think it makes any difference what type of school it is, apart from it takes pupils from 11 - 18.

YADNBU. I work in a secondary school and some kids do this. I went to the school I work in and I agree, even though I only left 8 years ago not a single pupil would have DARED back then.

I have walked past while they're smoking and said to them that they could at least have the respect to walk down the road/round the corner, however I am not exactly an authority figure and it happens all the time. I don't know how much power the school have to do anything about behaviour outside school grounds though?

If our kids are seen smoking in their uniform they have a day's internal exclusion. No argument, outside gates, inside gates, town, wherever. Some parents complain, but it's an inflexible rule!

In my school, if you were in school uniform and caught smoking by staff member or prefect, it was 1st strike detention, 2nd strike reverse suspension (that is come in during school holidays for 3 days) and 3rd strike expulsion.

This included train station, street corner, anywhere. Prefects word prevailed too, so if they has it in for you, you were fecked, basically.
