to let my ten-year-old DD dress as an anarchist for the royal wedding?

At DD's school they've been asked to dress like royalty for a day to celebrate the royal wedding. Felt slightly sick at the thought of all those little princesses and, knowing my DD is distinctly anti-girly and not especially pro-royal, I suggested she go as a republican. Oliver Cromwell is tricky to do (suit of armour, anyone?), so we settled on an anarchist - all in black, anarchy symbol splashed on T-shirt, bomb etc. Now I'm wondering if it's a bit inappropriate and in bad taste. Maybe I should lighten up a bit about royalty? Otoh, she REALLY doesn't want to be a queen or a princess, it's just not her style.

Do you seriously think this girl knows about Walden, Thoreau? Do excuse me if I'm wrong.

She doesn't care about following the herd but she knows that anarchy is not a Good Thing. She's not stupid.

Gooseberrybushes · 30/03/2011 13:24

Oh, so she doesn't want to be an anarchist? She wants to be an anti-royalist? So the OP doesn't know the difference after all?

Gooseberrybushes · 30/03/2011 13:25

If you're going to make a political statement best be sure what it is. Not surprised to came to mn then.

jeee · 30/03/2011 13:26

This thread seems to be getting a bit snippy now.

But the suggestion of dressing up as a nazi officer, and claiming to be Harry, was genius.

CatAmongstPigeons · 30/03/2011 13:28

I could spend all day sitting here chinwagging about politics with you gooseberry but I get the impression that it'd be somewhat akin to bashing my head repeatedly against a brick wall (or The Ritz.. Wink) and for that reason I think I'll abstain..

Gooseberrybushes · 30/03/2011 13:28

Absolutely, then she could make an official apology to the whole school to complete the deal.

seoraemaeul · 30/03/2011 13:28

Just on a practical note - can I suggest you keep a plan B in mind. I can't even remember what it was for but my Niece at the same age had some big elaborate plan for a fancy dress.... right up until the night before when having spoken to all her friends about what they were wearing decided that yes at 10 it would be quite nice to conform. Cue my sister running round like an idiot at 10pm trying to unearth a new costume..

Will now duck back down beneath the parapet

cinnamontoast · 30/03/2011 13:29

Well obv I know the difference, Gooseberrybushes, we were trying out various ideas.

Gooseberrybushes · 30/03/2011 13:30

Probably a good thing Cat. I doubt you have any idea what my politics are from this thread. Apart from disliking anarchy and disdaining the criminals who use it as a cover for hooliganism.

Gooseberrybushes · 30/03/2011 13:30

Beertricks doesn't seem to think so.

hogsback · 30/03/2011 13:31

Gooseberrybushes - you seem to know an awful lot about OP's daughter. She may well have read Walden, I did when I was 10 or 11 - as has Lisa Simpson judging by the number of references she makes to it :)

Seriously, you were going to let her carry a fake bomb? You actually thought about it enough to think, hey not a bad idea, I'll actually write it down and see what people think? What are you like?

cinnamontoast · 30/03/2011 13:33

She hasn't read Walden, Hogsback, but I will put her on to it right away. She has read Sue Townsend, who is a bona fide republican, I believe.

Gooseberrybushes · 30/03/2011 13:34

Alright -- OP has your 10-year-old daughter read Thoreau and Walden?

You don't seem to think the op knows the difference between anti-royalism and anarchism, when you asked how the royal family rule us. Of course, maybe it's you that doesn't know.

I'm assuming from that, Gooseberry, that your kids have never played with toy swords, or celebrated Bonfire Night?

OP posts:
Gooseberrybushes · 30/03/2011 13:35

Wow -- a lucky guess. She hasn't. Who'd a thunk it.

Gooseberrybushes · 30/03/2011 13:35

Because that's exactly the same as carrying a fake bomb into school.

That's enough for me.. That and the fact that you seem to like the 'sound of your own voice' (whatever the internet equivalent of that is.. View of your own type?) enough to be posting so much vacuous drivel that there's soon going to be more posts from you than everybody else combined....

My patience is starting to run thin as all you appear to be doing is launching a verbal assault at Beertricks and insinuating that cinnamon is some sort of wicked, self-satisfying mother who's facilitation of her daughters individuality is tantamount to child abuse.

Get over yourself.

hogsback · 30/03/2011 13:37

Gooseberrybushes - erm, you realise Walden is by Henry David Thoreau? Your last post suggests you think that Walden is author.
