to let my ten-year-old DD dress as an anarchist for the royal wedding?

At DD's school they've been asked to dress like royalty for a day to celebrate the royal wedding. Felt slightly sick at the thought of all those little princesses and, knowing my DD is distinctly anti-girly and not especially pro-royal, I suggested she go as a republican. Oliver Cromwell is tricky to do (suit of armour, anyone?), so we settled on an anarchist - all in black, anarchy symbol splashed on T-shirt, bomb etc. Now I'm wondering if it's a bit inappropriate and in bad taste. Maybe I should lighten up a bit about royalty? Otoh, she REALLY doesn't want to be a queen or a princess, it's just not her style.

I'm delighted someone has the wit and imagination to do this. Why are we all manipulated into supporting something we don't want or need? Please, please, please don't let us drown in a sea of vomit covered bunting. Do it!

Love the sentiment (and hate the idea of a load of little girls all identically dressed like sickly princesses), but agree an anarchist with a bomb might not be in the best taste ... a Cavalier would be cool though.

grovel he's a bit doubtful about Father Christmas too (cynical little horror), so I find myself trying to convince him that both the queen and FC really do exist, in the same breath as reassuring him that dragons are imaginary. All a bit confusing for a tired mother. Whether the queen should exist is another question, of course. FC clearly should, but sadly doesn't.

BBGFG Roundhead, surely?

Yes, every little girl wants to be the little princess Hmm comes from being brought up on fairy tales! "And they lived happily ever after" - Rubbish of course!
Weird - we're in the 21st century!

Great she wants to dress radically different! I say more power to her! I would cancel the "bomb motif" , it's not only in bad taste, but too raw for many people!!

Why would you encourage a 10-year-old to wear a symbol of something so sick?

Antichrist! Grin

How about an anarchist clutching a manifesto instead of a bomb?

Quick update: for royal dress-up day, DD wore a T-shirt customised to look like this mug. Her idea, she looked great and she got lots of positive comments from teachers, parents and pupils. Thanks for all the great ideas and comments, Mumsnetters!
