to let my ten-year-old DD dress as an anarchist for the royal wedding?

At DD's school they've been asked to dress like royalty for a day to celebrate the royal wedding. Felt slightly sick at the thought of all those little princesses and, knowing my DD is distinctly anti-girly and not especially pro-royal, I suggested she go as a republican. Oliver Cromwell is tricky to do (suit of armour, anyone?), so we settled on an anarchist - all in black, anarchy symbol splashed on T-shirt, bomb etc. Now I'm wondering if it's a bit inappropriate and in bad taste. Maybe I should lighten up a bit about royalty? Otoh, she REALLY doesn't want to be a queen or a princess, it's just not her style.

MiniCorrect, now THAT is what I call bad taste. I take my hat off to you.

Otoh, wasn't Diana secretly the most subversive royal of the lot?

Quite agree I doubt she would ever cringe if she dressed up as a princess on an anarchists day

But then I doubt a school would think it appropriate for 10 years olds to have an anarchists day

helibee · 29/03/2011 23:04

If you were asking elastamum about what paper she reads because of her comment about anarchist involvement on the royal wedding day. The BBC and Sky news both said last night that an extreme group of anarchists would be causing disruption on the royal wedding day. The police can't even stop it as the group are being very coy about details and sending out false details.

I also think there is a middle ground between anti royal and anarchist.

I don't think a bomb is ever in good taste. However if she doesn't want to go as a princess then it's her choice to go as something else. Lots of people have given you some great ideas. Good luck

LunarRose · 29/03/2011 23:41

dressing up as a princess is distasteful but swearing on a t-shirt for a 10year old isn't
Hmm

ohmeohmy · 29/03/2011 23:42

this is good though www.cafepress.com/evilgeniusstore/7246635

When I said Che Guevara I was thinking more about Communism and the fact that it stands against the idea of Monarchy in theory.

Or am i wrong??? [maybe i'm too tired to engage in political conversation right now]

But anyway, still think its a fab idea, and I rate your DD for having such a broad view of life at such a young age.

LunarRose · 29/03/2011 23:47

(I am however liking lots of the other tshirts in the evil genius store)

If you don't want her to dress as a royal, send her in normal uniform, it's that simple. On a side note; I'm a bit baffled by the idea of a royal wedding being used to signify your political leanings. Watching it does not make you a royalist, and neither does abstaining from watching it make you an anarchist. It's a wedding, not the Nuremberg rallies.

On the subject of 10yos holding strong views, my own ds is almost embarrassingly vocal about his atheism. Every now and then I suggest going to church (in a fairweather, religion-lite way at Easter or Christmas, or to Sunday school type things) and he steadfastly refuses. I swear he's not got that from me. And he goes to a church school!

He's a pretty young 10 imo, too.

From what I remember of my own views at 10, I've certainly re-evalutated them and they've become far less black and white, but other than the abortion issue (which horrified me when I first learned about it via a friend's strict RC mother whereas now I'm very much pro-choice) they're more sophisticated versions these days rather than complete revisions, and I'm certainly not embarassed about them.

I would definatly let her

HanBanan · 30/03/2011 11:33

anarchy is a complete breakdown of all government systems, not just royalty. It would mean living without police or any set of rules whatsover. Anarchy is a life without any rules at all.

Not a great society for women and children to live in or idealise about. Oliver cromwell was not an anarchist.

Baggypussy · 30/03/2011 11:46

I think it's bloody hilarious!..but may not be that helpful to DD in the long run unfortunately.

cinnamontoast · 30/03/2011 11:53

Well done, BeerTricksPotter - bet you're tempted to actually fart in their face now. It's hard to stand up against these things sometimes, isn't it, especially as people like to make out that you're some kind of killjoy, but honestly, I'm proud of the fact that DD wants to go against the crowd. Much better that than thinking Kate M is a role model for 10-year-olds.

why? why??

anyhow I thought anarchists were non conformist

you can't "dress like an anarchist" unless they're just part of another herd like the rest of us Hmm

Gooseberrybushes · 30/03/2011 12:40

you just sound contrary, you're going to be ridiculous and your daughter will be a laughing stock

What a coooooool idea! Go for it - it's only a bit of fun!

DuelingFanjo · 30/03/2011 12:54

I keep misreading the title as antichrist Grin

meditrina · 30/03/2011 12:55

BeerTricks: I think you're being a bit unfair. You wouldn't send a child dressed as an Elizabethan to Viking day, or as Little Lord Fauntleroy on the Ragged School trip, or wearing green when it's red for Red Nose Day.

I'm not sure i could manage an Oliver Cromwell costume: how about a tricoteuse instead?

dolldaggabuzzbuzz · 30/03/2011 12:58

What about Diana? After the crash.........
