to let my ten-year-old DD dress as an anarchist for the royal wedding?

At DD's school they've been asked to dress like royalty for a day to celebrate the royal wedding. Felt slightly sick at the thought of all those little princesses and, knowing my DD is distinctly anti-girly and not especially pro-royal, I suggested she go as a republican. Oliver Cromwell is tricky to do (suit of armour, anyone?), so we settled on an anarchist - all in black, anarchy symbol splashed on T-shirt, bomb etc. Now I'm wondering if it's a bit inappropriate and in bad taste. Maybe I should lighten up a bit about royalty? Otoh, she REALLY doesn't want to be a queen or a princess, it's just not her style.

It's only dressing up. When they dress as Romans, Vikings, Victorians etc it doesn't mean they are supporting the values those societies held.

But I LOVE grovel's Nazi/Harry idea.

BrokenRing · 29/03/2011 18:51

She could go as The Paperbag Princess from the Robert Munsch book en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Paper_Bag_Princess

Other than that, like GoldenGreen, she would dress up as a Roman for a history day, I imagine, without agreeing with gladiatorial combat and colonising everything. Or do the Britannia or Elvis thing but to parade anti-monarchism is a bit pointed, I think.

Ditch the bomb, and I think this is one of the most awesome ideas ever! Just because an obscene amount of money is being thrown at the royal wedding we don't all have to suddenly turn into fanatical royalists. Indeed, amongst a lot of people it's having precisely the opposite effect.
Don't worry about bad taste, it's a 10 year old dressing up, it's not like she's going to start a riot in the playground (is she?!).

Good on you and your dd.

My mum hated the Verger at our old church and she asked all the kids in Sunday school to come to church dressed as something to do with Jesus the Lamb... my mum sent her with a jar of mint sauce xx

MrsMcgee · 29/03/2011 19:29

What about cromwell in a big collar and black robe etc?? Love the idea of going as a republican though! Have put DP on idea hunt for you! Guy Fawkes? With a barrel, beard and big collar?!

I don't think you should have influenced your daughter on this one.

It's a very nobbish idea to dress as royalty for a day. It's also a bit risky to dress as a bomb-wielding anarchist. I wouldn't set my daughter up for possible snippy comments from others.

redexpat · 29/03/2011 20:12

Dress her up as an Ozzie (hat, corks, surfboard) and say she is Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.

Loving the Boudicca suggestions.

The Queen was a Girl Guide during the war - am SURE you could borrow a guide uniform. Sophie Wessex is patron of Girl Guiding UK.

GandTiceandaslice · 29/03/2011 20:13

I'm not a Royalist but I think you're wrong.

MillyR · 29/03/2011 20:17

Put coke cans in her hair and send her as Lady Gaga.

Or get her one of those furry hats with dog ears and send her as a King Charles Spaniel.

Or send her as a chess piece - not sure how, made out of cardboard boxes?

Or send her as Helen of Troy.

Sidge · 29/03/2011 20:37

Or put a china plate on her head and she could be Royal Doulton.

Or cover her in playing cards and she could be a Royal Flush.

Or cover her in envelopes and she could be Royal Mail.

Am I helping? Grin

hogsback · 29/03/2011 20:39

I echo the idea of going as a sans-culottes, or maybe as Marianne herself. Phrygian helmet, cockade and a Liberté, égalité, fraternité sash.

And a mini guillotine...

expatinscotland · 29/03/2011 20:43

Dress her as a Jacobite, with the flower in the cap and all and a tshirt that reads, 'Bonnie Prince Charlie was NOT a pretender,' because well, he wasn't.

kaid100 · 29/03/2011 20:46

I thought the Princess Leia idea was a good one, it sticks to the principle of a royal outfit while remaining ambivalent about monarchy in this country.

umf · 29/03/2011 20:56

Brilliant.

PMSL at "anarchists have killed people, you know" replies.

Kings and queens? Maybe they've killed a few people over the years? Some executions? Few unneccesary wars? Bit of crippling inequality?

This kind of pageantry is what lets royalty and governments get away with it.

More power to your DD.

Grin umf just what I was thinking! oooh those nasty anarchists but the lovely fluffy royals Grin

umf · 29/03/2011 21:06

Kinda think a sans-culottes may be more diplomatic alternative, though. Not that DCs should be brought up to fear controversy.

CatAmongstPigeons · 29/03/2011 21:08

That's BLOODY wonderful! I'm just jealous that I didn't think of it first..

Although may I suggest a molotov (you could use a miniatures bottle, small = cute and ironic!) in place of the bomb, and if you want to make it really authentic I'd make her a little red and black 'CNT' flag with a hellcat, just for good measure (See, then they can't complain, because you're being historically accurate! ^^)

I wish my DD went to school with yours, they could be chums. (She thinks princesses are rubbish too.)

Best of luck with your costume!

ohmeohmy · 29/03/2011 21:12

how about Queen Lili'uokalani of Hawaii? US pinched her country and imprisoned her.

ohmeohmy · 29/03/2011 21:13

or how about a cheesburger - Royale with cheese like in Pulp Fiction?

RedbinD · 29/03/2011 21:15

Marie Antoinette, she could carry her head under her arm.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 29/03/2011 21:21

Madonna (queen of pop)

lionheart · 29/03/2011 21:21

Like the Sex Pistols idea.

How about sending her as an executioner?

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 29/03/2011 21:23

Lucifer (king of Hell)
Jesus (king of the Jews)
