Yes, I have to say when we say brown sauce here we really mean HP.

Except for those strange people who buy Daddy's. But we seat them below the salt and try not to make eye contact. They are strange.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 29/03/2011 18:44

Can I just ask wtf is eggy bread?

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 29/03/2011 18:44

I have a feeling I should probably know the answer to that!

Georgimama · 29/03/2011 18:46

Bread (type and whether cut into triangles/fingers a subject of debate as you can see above) swished in beaten egg and then fried. Add tomato ketchup, or not. Yum.

Cheefful Yank's French Toast is bloody delicious. I've done it that way many times. It's also nice with crispy streaky bacon.

Georgimama · 29/03/2011 18:51

French toast is also delicious but eggy bread and french toast are completely separate dishes - it's like saying mousakka is the same thing as shepherd's pie.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 29/03/2011 19:03

oh yes to BBGFG re glasgow law: he thinks its Christmas when i do square sausage on a white roll for Sunday breakfast. And a cup of milky builders tea with a heaped sugar. Heaven apparently. Me, i'm a link sausage and coffee girl!

scottishmummy · 29/03/2011 19:11

toomuchmonth: yum! And generally I'm a coffee person, but that first hot drink of a hangover has to be milky builder's tea for me too. (I need much more milk in tea these days after living in Glasgow for several years).

I second 'Mmm tattie scone'. Want one.

There seems to be a terminology gap here about eggy bread/French toast. For me they're both sweet (or sweet/savoury at most e.g. bacon and maple syrup). Fried bread is savoury and can be served with brown sauce (ideally) or red sauce (at a push). I'm aware that I'm in a minority on this thread though ...

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 02/04/2011 00:02

right, i think dh was planning on making me pancakes/bacon/maple syrup for mothers day breakfast, think i will request a change to tattie scone and egg roll x 2. only problem is eating that in bed, i love it when the egg bursts and dribbles but i have cream duvet and pillows..... Smile

tryingtoleave · 02/04/2011 00:08

If eggy bread is french toast then you are all nuts! Cheap bread would be a waste of effort! I use good bread - preferably challah, brioche or sourdough bread, put it in a mixture of egg, milk, sugar and a bit of sherry and then we serve it with greek yoghurt and berries.

I think I will do it tomorrow...

BringBackGoingForGold · 02/04/2011 09:16

trying, that is seriously poncey French toast (and I mean that as a compliment). Personally I always go cheap white sliced, but if someone made it for me your way I'd be delighted.

toomuch, put a waterproof sheet down Smile

scottishmummy · 02/04/2011 20:38

maws day im hoping egg&tattie scone on roll wi broon sauce.yum.

with side plate for crumbs, pile of papers inc sunday mail for weegie tittle tattle and cuppa tea

LetThereBeRock · 02/04/2011 20:41

No to brown sauce. It's disgusting. It's not acceptable on sausage sandwiches,or on anything. I'll occasionally add a little to stews, but that's it.

LetThereBeRock · 02/04/2011 20:43

And bacon sandwiches need butter.I like a little garlic mayo on the bread, just a smidge,or a tiny drop of ketchup.

scottishmummy · 02/04/2011 20:45

i add mushrom ketchup to stews really tasty

ShipsThatPass · 02/04/2011 20:47

OP, he is a monster. Divorce him Grin

LetThereBeRock · 02/04/2011 20:47

I use that too.Everything goes in when I'm making steak pie. Worcester sauce, tomato puree, red wine, mushroom ketchup, brown sauce etc.

LetThereBeRock · 02/04/2011 20:49

The mushroom ketchup is also useful for making peppercorn and mushroom sauce for steak.I can't imagine putting it on steak neat though. It's vile.

scottishmummy · 02/04/2011 20:49

when i make onion gravy i add mushroom ketchup

LetThereBeRock · 02/04/2011 20:51

I made onion gravy yesterday, to go with meatballs. It was good but missing something, I'll have to try that next time.
