not to like wearing a bikini in public?

laInfanta · 26/03/2011 23:42

It's not because I have 'body confidence issues' or anything like that. It would just feel weird! I wouldn't wander round in my underwear in front of strangers, and bikinis don't cover any more (sometimes less!) I don't mind wearing one while swimming privately with just friends or DP, but couldn't do it in public!

DP thinks it's weird, anyone else feel like me?

FabbyChic · 26/03/2011 23:47

I prefer tankini's or costumes myself too.

Geocentric · 26/03/2011 23:49

I don't like bikinis either, and I grew up in Brazil!! So in my teens I would wear them anyway as my friends would all take the piss if I wore a swimming suit. Now I'm 38 and wear whatever I want, much better.

AgentZigzag · 26/03/2011 23:50

Where are you talking about when you say 'in public'?

Walking down the high street on market day?

Or just on the beach?

I'd laugh in DHs face if he even mentioned me in the same sentence as a bikini, but then I'm not a bikini person.

AgentZigzag · 26/03/2011 23:51

Oooo that last sentence looked like I was being all judgy about bikini wearers Grin

But they don't have a stereotype though do they?

laInfanta · 26/03/2011 23:51

Haha no I don't mean on the high street!

The beach or a public swimming pool, something like that. DP bought me a nice one but I only wear it when it's just us or friends.

Geocentric · 26/03/2011 23:53

Zigzag no stereotype over here, everyone wears them. People like me who like swimming suits are the freaks... Grin

TrillianAstra · 26/03/2011 23:54

Most normal swimming costumes don't exactly cover you much more either.

Er, yeah, you are a bit weird, it is unusual to consider a bikini as being less "dressed" than a swimming costume if you are in a place where swimwear is usually worn.

It's not really a big deal, other than that you have rejected a present so your DP might be feeling a bit put out.

AgentZigzag · 26/03/2011 23:55

Give some old gent an eyefull if you did though laInfanta Grin

I'll join you in your freakery geo, I like to cover up as much as poss.

scottishmummy · 26/03/2011 23:56

public?as in byres rd.hahaha, naw dont think so

tulpe · 27/03/2011 00:08

Erm.....
wouldn't select a bikini as first choice for swimming with DCs at local pool, but tbh would have probably worn one-piece pre-DCs for "swimming as exercise" anyway. However, on a beach? No probs. Bikini every time.

tulpe · 27/03/2011 00:12

okay, realised haven't actually answered OP: YABU. Life is too short to worry about the opinions of others. Why shouldn't you wear a bikini in public? A one piece will still show your shape and arms/legs/bottom (to an extent). I don't see the difference tbh (speaking as someone who up until last year had a very crepey "austrian blind" type tum).

laInfanta · 27/03/2011 00:14

It's not really about what other people think. There's nothing wrong with my body anyway. I don't really like wearing a swimming costume either as it shows a lot, as you say.

OP posts:
Thingumy · 27/03/2011 00:14

I did in Sardinia

I wouldn't in the UK.

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/03/2011 00:22

Tell him you're going to rent a villa with a private pool so you can wear bikibis for your whole holiday.

If you don't feel comfortable, don't wear one. I quite like wearing bikini tops with swim shorts.

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/03/2011 00:22

Or bikinis

manicinsomniac · 27/03/2011 00:25

You are not being unreasonable. It's about what you feel comfortable in.

I fully agree with you re the underwear comparison and I personally would never wear a bikini in public. Nor would I wear a swimsuit or even tankini and little shorts. I have a severely distorted body image and multiple scars on my arms and legs so it just isn't for me.

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/03/2011 00:40

I wear things like this but they also do long ones like
this.

startail · 27/03/2011 00:42

YANBU, don't really have the figure for one, burn too easily and like diving in! Avoid halter neck costumes too, I'm very short sighted and didn't realise all the teen boys were staring at me until I started to climb the diving pool steps and looked down to find the straps had stretched and the top of the costume wasn't in the correct placeBlush
Very boring tend to either one piece costumes for the pool and tankis for the beach simply because you can go to the loo having pulled a tee shit on (as I say I burn)

laInfanta · 27/03/2011 00:47

Oh yeah I burn. I wear shirt-like things on the beach over cossie. I like the first lot of shorts, Narky.

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/03/2011 00:54

I live in them on the beach on holiday. I wear a bikini top and bottoms and the shorts over the top. The synthetic ones dry like swim suits but cover a lot more when you're bending over trying to find stuff in THe Holiday Bag.

LessNarkyPuffin · 27/03/2011 02:04

Ah. Bloody clocks changing. I have to go to bed now.

noodle69 · 27/03/2011 08:19

I wear a bikini to the local pool with my daughter and on holidays. It doesnt really matter either way I just like bikinis better

SaggyHairyArse · 27/03/2011 08:45

I do not have a bikini body, despite walking an hour a day with the dog, two hours of karate a week and watching what I eat, I am decidely wobbly. I do however wear bikinis on holiday (this country or abroad) however I don't strut up and down the beach in one, I tie a sarong around my neck or wear beach tunic things when standing and wear only the bikini when lying down.

bubbleymummy · 27/03/2011 08:47

Tbh I think it looks a bit strange when people wear them to a swimming pool. I always associate them with the beach and more as something to let you get a tan than for swimming :)

ENormaSnob · 27/03/2011 10:28

I love bikinis.
