There is a certain image with it isn't there. Is anyone a member? Is that reputation still deserved today? Should I hold on till I retire?? Just read an article about a group in London called the Dalston Darlings and thought it sounded quite fun.

do it! I fancy going out of pure curiosity. And to buy some jam.

ZillionChocolate · 25/03/2011 21:23

My friend is a member in another bit of London and there are a number of under 30s and it sounds like everyone has fun. If you don't like it, you don't have to go back?

I fancy joining too and have thought about it for a while. I do make jam, so it could be the right place for me :) When I spoke to our local group the very nice WI lady told me, we are mature in years but young at heart :)

Are there any members on MN? Maybe one of us should go along and feedback to all the WI curious?

If they had one of their militant wings here I would join. There seem to be very much 2 types, the old one and the young one.

slipperandpjsmum · 26/03/2011 09:15

Apparently you can start your own group up TheSkiingGardener

Who's in?

There is a MNer who is in the WI. She's a RL friend of mine, and rather busy at the mo' but she not,AFAIK, making jam and learning the words to Jerusalem.
My Mum (perhaps a more typical WI member) is currently on a holiday with them- in Israel and Jordan. (when I asked her about the unrest, and was she worried, she pursed her WI lips at me and said "We are the WI, we have our packed lunches and our thermos flasks, they wouldn't dare!") She's been to India, Argentina and Poland with them, and has a great social life. Never made jam in her life, but she does know the words to Jerusalem.
