a 'friend' has posted this as their status

He is known to the police. Please be aware

except it actually says a man's name. i have asked them if they have contacted the police and FB to let them know it is happening but as yet have had no reply.

AIBU to think this could cause a lot of trouble for someone of that name. what are people thinking putting things like that on FB?

i have blocked them but nor before googling the name and finding two websites that confirmed it is a hoax that has been running since 2003. i sent a link to one of the websites to the person and i posted a link on my page.

I would have been tempted to change my name on FB to the "paedo" name and comment "dammit, XX, told you not to blow my cover!" on the warning...

You could perhaps come up with one of your own ie WARNING [name of any fuckwit who forwards such a thing] is a knuckledragging fuckwit of a tabloid reader who is forever reposting brainless scaremongering untrue shit on here. That's why I have defriended him/her. S/he will clutter up YOUR Facebook with the same thing if you don't ACT NOW! Have you no SOUL?

atiat, sorry if i have confused you. the thing i have pasted in my OP is a hoax. there is no such person with that name trying to befriend kids.
