I have physio for my joints and went to a new clinic to start a newcourse of physio. was told to bring shorts and expecting to go to like a hall its all behind curtains like on a ward? but a bit more space and a little bed.

I was told to get dressed into my shorts by the nurse and told to wait for my physio instructor, expecting a woman ..in came this beefy bloke looked like MR motivator bless him

I was a bit Shock in my shorts and fat legs

but I thought meh, physio not usually intrusive...wrong!

I had to lie down on bed usual stuff like feeling knees, but stretching my legs inwards he had to push down on back of my legs and his head was pretty close to erm...a certain area. Pushing my legs as far over my head as I could get them

I had to touch my toes , and had to keep touching the back of my legs to see tonage / hamstring stuff
I just felt self concious, seemed like a nice bloke but would it have been more appropriate for a woman to be doing this?

Or am I BU

Both my kids were delivered by male doctors and my sterilization was done by a male doctor. Not a problem.

Deliainthemaking · 24/03/2011 18:26

WTF Am I reading?

some posts were fair some of twattish comments on here I'm sorry I ever posted on here, I'd like to know how IABU when other people have digressed this issue which would make many women feel uncomfortable, into whats wrong with lesbian gynaecologists? If its THAT unreasonanble GTFO and make your own thread to derail.

sorry that was bitchy but I'm really fuckin pissed off!!

I am a doctor and I am not bothered whether any HCP for whatever procedure is a man or a woman. I have to look at/examine men and women and don't find that difficult either. It's just a job.

However, what I did find embarrassing was when the whole of the paediatric crash team showed up just after DD1 had shot out very quickly (DH had pressed the button in a panic when the MW asked him to do something completely different Hmm ) and two of the team were male doctors who I was quite good friends with. I was legs akimbo and not yet delivered the placenta. I think they were even more mortified than me though; they certainly ran out pretty quickly.

Thornykate · 24/03/2011 18:27

I think you should be given a choice as some women would be uncomfortable & unable to receive the treatment for religious reasons so it could have been a wasted appt.

I used to see a physio who was male & I never felt comfortable being touched by him. One time DP came in with me purely to see the exercises & I was surprised that the physio covered me with a towel instead of telling me I needed to be wearing just knickers & a top Hmm

If u don't feel comfy in any situation then get up and leave.

MmeLindt · 24/03/2011 18:29

Delia
I think you should calm down a bit. It is a conversation and it is normal that some posters go off on a tangent.

And the question is not that far off the mark. Would you be uncomfortable with a lesbian therapist/gynacologist/physio...

ie. are you uncomfortable because of that person's gender, or because he/she may be having lustful thoughts about you.

BooyHoo · 24/03/2011 18:29

delia this isn't a closed thread. when you post on MN you have to accept that other people will post things you have no say over. your post lead to another poster discussing her opinions on the motives behind a man wanting to be a gynaecologist. others have responded to her. you dont own teh rights to this thread. sorry.

FutureNannyOgg · 24/03/2011 18:31

I'm pretty sure noone chooses gynae as a specialism because they want to look at vaginas. For a start most of the vaginas they look at have something wrong with them (shudders at recalling overhearing an exchange in the next bed to me in hosp, as the gynae dealt with an old lady with an ulcerated prolapse), and even the healthy ones aren't all that pretty. It's also an awful lot of work for a bit of a perv, the internet is a whole lot cheaper and less hassle.

I think the vast majority of health professionals are just trying to make you better, and really don't care about your gender or attractiveness. YABU

Onetoomanycornettos · 24/03/2011 18:32

Lustful thoughts? Have any of you actually been to an gynaecologist?!

That remark about male gynaes was so pathetic, I'm speechless. Most hospital consultants are male. Perhaps you think the ones specialising in breast cancer like looking at breasts...

expatinscotland · 24/03/2011 18:33

YABU.

The NHS exists to provide service as quickly as possible, if you want a female, request one, but it's not a 5-star hotel. You get what's on offer unless you request otherwise.

BooyHoo · 24/03/2011 18:34

"Lustful thoughts? Have any of you actually been to an gynaecologist?!"

who is that to?

Deliainthemaking · 24/03/2011 18:35

It annoyed me as I posted clearly twice that this wasnt a leching issue and people have afterwards posted comments saying basically I I am saying that and then derail it. Hmm

I see its relevance but when people deliberately ignore what I have put then derail it its not on

OP posts:
satanrejectedmysoul · 24/03/2011 18:35

YABU

expatinscotland · 24/03/2011 18:36

I don't see it as a leching issue. You shouldn't expect it from the NHS and if you want it you have to request it.

unfitmother · 24/03/2011 18:36

Nadia you are being insulting on so many levels.
Comparing a a professionally regulated physio with a masseur was crass but to suggesst that male doctors seeing women's genitalia and female doctors seeing male genitalia are somehow perverted is just obscene. Angry

Blu · 24/03/2011 18:36

Nadia - MOST unreasonable to compare a medically trained NHS professional, subject to all sorts of professional guidelines and protocols, with a 'masseur' in an unregulated spa.

BooyHoo · 24/03/2011 18:37

"It annoyed me as I posted clearly twice that this wasnt a leching issue and people have afterwards posted comments saying basically I I am saying that and then derail it. "

people were responding to nadiawadia.

Blu · 24/03/2011 18:37

x-posted Grin

unfitmother · 24/03/2011 18:40

Delia in response to your original question - YABU.
If he's not a lech and I'm assuming that you're not, then what's the problem?
If you do not wish to be examined by a male HCP you need to state this before the appointment.

I was the one who wrote about "lustful thoughts" but I did not say that this was my opinion, or worry.

Fwiw, I have been to male and female gynaes over the year. The absolute worst worst worst one was a female. I have a gynae here in Geneva who is an absolute darling, very kind, gentle and compassionate. Male.

MmeLindt · 24/03/2011 18:42

BeerTricks
you had better take Male Nursery Staff off the list, they are suspect I hear.

springbokdoc · 24/03/2011 18:43

Nadia really?! Just about everything was really off

NadiaWadia · 24/03/2011 19:21

The main issue is not 'perverts' but why men want to specialise in what should be a mainly female field of medicine. And if women were more senior in this area, it would be better for everyone. Come on, if you were offered the choice between a male or female gynaecologist, assuming they were equally qualified, which would you choose? Also, many women would find it difficult for cultural reasons to be treated by a man for these types of problems, so in an ideal world, there would be a majority of women working in this area.

Ignoring this and pretending its not a reality is 'pathetic'.

NadiaWadia · 24/03/2011 19:24

Delia I apologise if you are upset, but sometimes threads do go off-topic. It is normal.

BooyHoo · 24/03/2011 19:30

nadia you really are the only one being pathetic.

"but why men want to specialise in what should be a mainly female field of medicine"

firstly, why should it be mainly female?

secondly, there are many many occupations that are seen to be male jobs or female jobs (construction industry versus beauty therapists for example) are you saying there is something wrong with people who chose to work in a field that is dominated by the opposite sex?

is it just jobs that involve genitalia that you think should be dominated by one gender? is that because you view genitalia as only sexual?
