I am over a week late for my period, I have sore boobs a couple of times which is unusual for me as I only get them when pregnant. This baby wasnt planned (none were, just lovely little gifts :) ). I could go after school to a clinic and get tested or I can wait until my Drs appointment Friday, this would give me more time for my period to come but I dont know if I can wait to know.

So do I wait, or do I go after school?

Ladies?

no I don't identify with " don't have 2quid to my name with another week til end of month but hey aren't unplanned babies, like, great?" feeling actually. I'm a grown up.

PQR · 24/03/2011 13:12

I can certainly identify with the being broke at the end of the month, but there is no way I would even consider going to the docs/clinic asking them to test for me. Seems a huge waste of resourses and time for the skint NHS, imagine if we all did this.
Op, why can't you just wait till pay day till you test?

TobyLerone · 24/03/2011 13:14

Still agreeing with Florence.

Thanks Grin

I'm not saying I'm never a bit short of money by the end of the month, but I'm pretty sure that if I were too broke to buy a £2 pregnancy test I'd be being a bit more careful with contraceptives in the first place. After all, they are available free.

confuddledDOTcom · 24/03/2011 13:25

I got my 20p test for my first two pregnancies, they were happy to do them. Afterwards I changed to a GP who didn't do them.

I've been in the position of knowing the £2 in my pocket has to last until the end of the week and hoping my electricity lasts that long. Doesn't mean I can't afford my children oh and the current pregnancy wasn't planned either, as far as I was concerned we'd finished having children. That doesn't make me a bad parent either.

Gemsy83 · 24/03/2011 13:57

If you cant afford it wait til you can- simple. This 'oh well the NHS give it- lets have it' attitude makes me fucking mad- the fact you pay taxes no where near covers the amount feckless people claim back because they dont want to out their hand in their own pocket for things.
A 16 year old fair enough but a grown adult with this sense of entitlement for a freebie is pathetic.

confuddledDOTcom · 24/03/2011 14:11

A 20p test is nothing compared to what my pregnancy costs the NHS daily. I guess you also object to me taking aspirin and a supplement daily on prescription or me having a night in hospital this week because I was having BH at 24 weeks.

I know I'm an expensive pregnancy, I have about 30 scans during one pregnancy, daily injections, the full course of steroids, I'll be put on a drip at some point costing £200 an hour last time it was 12 hours then I was swapped to a cheaper tablet in another hospital but they were aiming for 24 hours. Then the weeks of care my babies need because of all that. So to me 20p is nothing, me and my sense of entitlement, eh?

FlorenceCalamityandJoanofArc · 24/03/2011 14:49

the drs time wasted on you costs a lot more than 20p. Hmm

confuddledDOTcom · 24/03/2011 14:59

Yup they waste loads of time on me. The appointment where I see the doctor to tell them I'm pregnant where they need to ring around and get me an urgent scan so I can get my needles, get me in urgently with the CMW and they sort out my multitude of prescriptions wastes a good half hour of an on the day appointment Hmm

upyourdiva · 24/03/2011 17:38

Florence it may not be an ideal situation but what can be done about it now? and I am hoping that your last comment was not aimed at confuddled...

To be fair though it does annoy me when people take advantage of the NHS, I get free prescriptions but I very rarely use them and would not expect GP's to cover pregnancy test and I hate it when people use the minor ailments scheme when they don't need it. I mean people who go and ask for 2 bottles of Calpol 'because they like to have it in' or the best one is getting the nitty gritty comb free because their kids 'might' get headlice Hmm

Erm.. I can't really afford to be buying these things when my DS is actually ill so I get the own brand alternatives or hedlice comb that comes with the lotion!

Anyway I think it's unfair to grudge the time because everyone needs it and it would be spent on you whether or not you were taking a test.

FlorenceCalamityandJoanofArc · 24/03/2011 19:00

no-one needs to go to the doctors for a pregnancy test, either buy your own or wait a month and see if you have more symptoms. Hell, wait a few more months and see if a human comes out of you.

Its just so adolescent.

"the drs time wasted on you costs a lot more than 20p."

Florence you seem to have repeatedly missed the point that she was going to the doc's anyway, would have been 2 mins extra.

FlorenceCalamityandJoanofArc · 24/03/2011 19:48

Whatever. My point still stands, especially since most doctors won't do one for you anyway.

confuddledDOTcom · 24/03/2011 20:08

Yeah we can all just sit around for 9 months and wait and see Hmm I could wait and see who'd be dead at the end, me or the baby or how many weeks I manage before rejecting the baby.

I know this isn't my thread but I'm shocked at the generalisations that could prove fatal for some people. I get the impression though you're deliberately ignoring me, apart from that one incredibly disgusting post.

OracleInaCoracle · 24/03/2011 20:20

Im in a simillar situation to confuddled, hell, my gp will even give me a blood test at 7dpo if I ask them too. thats pretty bloody expensive. and you know what? Ive paid my taxes. I am entitled to medical help and diagnosis. so I will not feel bad abut it Hmm

florence, you really want to look at that attitude of yours. its pretty shocking.

FlorenceCalamityandJoanofArc · 24/03/2011 20:30

I'm guessing you could spare a quid for a pregnancy test. And what disgusting post Confused?

Whats so shocking to think that if you are 25 and have 2 unplanned children and not a red cent to your name you might be a bit more "fuck I think I might be pregnant" and a bit less "wow, another special gift, I can't afford a stick to piss in but ain't life grand?".

I didn't realise that was a shocking attitude.

OracleInaCoracle · 24/03/2011 20:34

fuck off. its not half as disgusting as your post. "FlorenceCalamityandJoanofArc Thu 24-Mar-11 14:49:33
the drs time wasted on you costs a lot more than 20p."

I have had 12 miscarriages and nearly died from complications following an ectopic pregnancy, not to mention the actual birth of ds. telling me and women like me that we are wasting nhs resources is pretty fucking appalling and shows a total lack of empathy.

OracleInaCoracle · 24/03/2011 20:37

and the op said that she is skint til payday. lots of people are. doesnt mean they are irresponsible, just living in a society where things are expensive and most people live payday to payday. clearblue is over a tenner. ditto first response. many tests are about £6. when you have to balance your books, thats a lot. doesnt mean that they can make another child work financially, could just mean the cooker broke. ffs, grow some perspective!

atswimtwolengths · 24/03/2011 20:38

I agree with you, Florence. For god's sake, women fought for the right to free contraception and there are still people whose every pregnancy is a complete surprise.

Most people know what it's like to be broke at the end of the month, but the one thing you don't do then is get pregnant! Isn't the adult thing to avoid pregnancy then at all cost, because you want to keep your own child and not be dependent? At 25 the OP has plenty of time to have another child and a visit to a good doctor will mean no more accidental pregnancies.

atswimtwolengths · 24/03/2011 20:39

Lissielou, lots of people ARE skint till payday, but surely if you can't afford a pregnancy test then it's better to avoid getting pregnant in the first place?

CrapBag · 24/03/2011 20:40

I don't think Florence is telling women like you that you are wasting NHS resources.

She is saying that having a pregnancy test done at the doctors is a waste of resources, which it is.

That does not include people who have complicated pregnancies and need extra resources.

People need to get their facts right.

OracleInaCoracle · 24/03/2011 20:42

but atswimtwolengths, there are ways of talking to people. just because you are safe behind a screen doesnt mean you can be as vile as you want!

and i disagree, people make an unplanned child work financially, even if they are struggling financially. yes, a third "unplanned" baby is a bit daft, but it happens. what if the op is a practising catholic and doesnt use BC? what if she is allergic to latex and has problems with the pill? there are any number of reasons why someone doesnt use BC.

OracleInaCoracle · 24/03/2011 20:43

crapbag, i refer you to the quoted post which was aimed at confuddled after she said that she recieved treatment for complications.
