A 25 year old woman was murdered near where I live on thursday walking home from work. She was missing for 3 days before her body was found hidden in woodland.

There was an initial arrest (rumoured to be the DH) but that person was released.

The police are warning people to be "vigliant" and saying it was likely to be a pre meditated attack by a local man unknown to the victim.

I know there is shit loads going on but its worrying that a stranger murder commited at 5 o'clock on a thursday doesn't even make the news.

very!!

perfumedlife · 18/03/2011 23:02

Very worrying. Where in the country was this wineclub?

Poor, poor woman.

There was a young woman brutally raped and dismembered in the park next to me three years ago and I always felt it was under reported too. Can't stop thinking about her.

freebreeze · 18/03/2011 23:02

I often think it's wierd how some murders become major headlines and the whole country follows the story and then others just pass every one by.

Why is this I wonder?

springydaffs · 18/03/2011 23:02

Was she black? Sad

Mrsmackie · 18/03/2011 23:03

Was this is Derbyshire? If so, it was on BBC news

AyeRobot · 18/03/2011 23:05

Two women a week killed by their current or former partners. Most don't make any sort of ripple on the news front.

It enrages me.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/03/2011 23:06

She was Chinese descent I think. It has been on the news but nowhere near as high profile as the lady in Bristol who was killed a while back.

AgentZigzag · 18/03/2011 23:06

Do the polive only use the media when and if needed?

Unfortunately people are murdered and go missing far too often, which means only the 'noteworthy' ones make national headlines.

It just seems such a sad reflection on the life they've had and the heartbreaking end they've come to.

Professor · 18/03/2011 23:06

live a couple of miles away from where this happened and it is strange how some murders make the headlines nationally and others dont

penguin73 · 18/03/2011 23:06

I saw this yesterday hidden away on Sky news and wondered why the first I knew was them showing a CCTV of her last steps, I thought I must have missed it earlier in the week but it is sad and shocking that this clearly isn't the case.

It seems sadly true that background/ profession/ race/ ethnicity/ appearance /location seem to have a major deciding factor in the news profile a story receives.

AyeRobot · 18/03/2011 23:08

Sorry, I should say that the fact that they are killed AND that their death is not newsworthy enrages me.

There is a thread Here that tries to recognise them all.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/03/2011 23:09

There's been a murder close to me in the last couple of weeks which hasn't made the national news either. A business couple disturbed some burglars and the woman managed to run off but the man was trapped by them. They then set the premises on fire and he died. Very savage and pointelss but I don't think in the national news.

caughtinanet · 18/03/2011 23:09

I've read about it in the newspaper but wonder if initially because the police took the husband in for questioning maybe they thought they didn't need to have a media appeal.

I see that he's now been released so maybe it will get a higher profile - a very sad case.

squeakytoy · 18/03/2011 23:10

That was in the nationals Viva.

wineclub · 18/03/2011 23:12

We don't have many murders around here. I suppose they aren't as rare as I thought [naive].

this is the story I saw it on the local news but not the national. I go running along the path she was on.

springy I did wonder if it was because she wasn't white and is an immigrant but I thought her stunning graduation picture and her working for such a famous company would negate that.

:( a mum was killed here in brighton few weeks ago,the ex was arrested but havent heard anything since, the 2 daughters were in the same school as my boys was on local news but no idea if they have solved it.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 18/03/2011 23:14

It was in the national papers and on sky news. Hardly obscure.

wineclub · 18/03/2011 23:32

I don't have sky. I suppose I forget that just because its not on BBC it doesn't mean it hasn't been reported. I thought stranger murders were more newsworthy than they apparently are.

I can understand murders when the murderer is caught straight away not getting much attention but I am surprised by this.

I think it is obscure compared to other murders of attractive young female graduates by strangers but obviously, my views may be distorted because for every murder that catches the publics imagination there might be 20 that I know nothing about.

the Bristol woman lived in a very affluent area and was white - BIG story. Obviously desperately sad and upsetting, but she wasn't working class/non-white/abused by her partner, which made it big news - how could anything like that happen to us privileged whites?? shock horror. Happens to the oiks all the time - we'll put that on page 5 of the local rag.

Angry

Madeleine McCann - father a consultant, BIG story. A similar thing happened to a black couple a few months later, their baby stolen, that story didn't go anywhere - after all, you know the blacks....

I wonder how the papers would treat a black woman judge getting murdered? Or a white male barrister murdering his kids? (crime of passion? stress at work?) Though I notice that today a domestic abuse story has hit the national news - the rodent who drowned his kids. But hey, they were working class!

loftyclodflop · 19/03/2011 05:35

It hasn't been in the national news because she was Chinese Sad

GotArt · 19/03/2011 05:44

The news is about selling a particular type of entertainment now and if other things are going on that will fill that, you won't hear about most of these. There was a case here last month where a native teenager went missing and was found dead on native land and there was national news coverage but a few months earlier, a young white woman was also missing and found dead (tortured and burned) on the same native land and not a peep until the mother complained to the media about it.

littleomar · 19/03/2011 06:01

it HAS been in the national news. was in Metro on Thursday.

Cymar · 19/03/2011 08:41

Viva, that other story about the man being trapped and burned in his house was in the news. It was in a few national rags AFAIK.

DevonDumplin · 19/03/2011 08:41

I've seen it too, don't watch news on the tv but it was on the front page of BBC news online a while ago. The poor lady murdered and dumped (husband apparently) got no coverage at all hardley even in local news. So sad Sad
