And the image she brings with her?

OP posts:
PoiseAndRationality · 18/03/2011 20:33

What is that "side show bob" thing she has going on with her hair about?

PuraVida · 18/03/2011 20:36

I quite like her, it seems like she's having fun. Admittedly I know diddly squat about her but what I do see and hear looks like a good way to spend your 20s (dv thing aside)

PeterAndreForPM · 18/03/2011 20:39

I don't like her

She comes across as rather sweet in interviews but boy are her strings being pulled by the misogynist music industry

stupid cow

although, not so stupid is she on he way to the bank ?

I find the popularity of her contributions a sad indictment of sexualised popular culture, tbh

pushing the boundaries when your fan base is 10yo's....not very responsible

never mind though...the mighty dollar trumps everything, yes ?

Panzee · 18/03/2011 20:39

I don't like her, that voice grates on me.

PeterAndreForPM · 18/03/2011 20:40

she is talentless when compared to Adele, for example

Katy Perry...cannot stand her either

Lizzylou · 18/03/2011 20:46

The transformation in Rihanna from sweet teen to sexual wildcat has been rapid, she is barely recognisable.

DH always says he is so glad we don't have girls. He says that almost all the women in music videos act like lapdancers.

He's right.

I'm not much of a fan of her music in any case.

sharbie · 18/03/2011 20:48

silly woman

ddubsgirl · 18/03/2011 20:51

i would say she knows what she wants and is strong minded, shes never claimed to be a teen idol/steew and innocent.
look at britney etc that have had tons of flack when trying to get away for the disney look, they dont stay teens and will want to break out from that image.

SequinsAndSparkles · 18/03/2011 20:53

I love her, she's absolutely brilliant. I love her music, she's gorgeous and original. What a boring place the music scene would be if it was all child friendly, we'd be listening to Mr Tumble songs all the damn time!

Things have always been the same, parents have always deemed certain music inappropriate for children, some music always will be. Madonna, anyone? And Lady Gaga is no bloody better.

BertieBotts · 18/03/2011 20:54

I am so torn. I don't want to like her, and I hate most of her songs lyrically - for the sex references and also the completely unhealthy view of relationships. But then I can't seem to help liking them. And I can't stand R'n'B usually Confused

It's weird though that a song can have me dancing around the house in one context and sitting feeling utterly depressed in another (ie when I actually listen to the words)

My friend who just went back to her abusive bf posted "Want you to make me feel like I'm the only girl in the world" on her facebook wall the day they got back together :( (Apart from being depressing in itself, it just strikes me as a really insecure thing to want in a relationship...)

melpomene · 18/03/2011 20:55

I agree with Jellykat - after seeing the photos of Rihanna's battered face when she was beaten by Chris Brown, it leaves a nasty taste to hear her singing about how much she likes bad boys and being whipped.

skippitydoodah · 18/03/2011 21:07

My DD is 7 and she told me that at school they were asked who they most admired. Loads of her friends said Rihanna. They obviously don't get the lyric content at that age but they must like her image. Bit of a worry really.

ddubsgirl · 18/03/2011 21:10

oh i dont know about that, better than trying to be a trat and bagging a famous footballer etc as that seems to be what a girl really needs to be famous Hmm

PeterAndreForPM · 18/03/2011 21:15

is that the only other option in your world, dddubs ?

Hmm to you too

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 18/03/2011 21:16

"look at britney etc that have had tons of flack when trying to get away for the disney look, they dont stay teens and will want to break out from that image"

I don't get this, most women don't suddenly hit their 20s and think HURRAH I'm going to dress like a lapdancer and talk about sex the whole time so I am not sure why women singers think they have to.

pinkfluffyprincess · 18/03/2011 21:17

Rihanna is under Jay Z's thumb and is therefore a devil worshipper. I do like that kind of music but her videos have satanic imagery in, as do Beyonces. And I'm a regular with a new name, not some mad bint

PeterAndreForPM · 18/03/2011 21:18

libra...because the mostly male record company bosses tell them to

and, unfortunately, our dysfunctional society appears to lap it up Hmm

TheArmadillo · 18/03/2011 21:22

I'm a regular with a new name, not some mad bint

you can be both - they're not mutally exclusive

pinkfluffyprincess · 18/03/2011 21:24

Whatever you think but the images are in the videos so...

Jellykat · 18/03/2011 21:26

What about women like Jessie J and Pink though? they've done good, and they're women with strong 'stand up for yourself girl' lyrics and images.

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 18/03/2011 21:27

PeterAndre - I get that but it's the fact they are complicite in it IYSWIM. Being a strong, independent women - which is also what they like to sing about - isn't about showing your breasts and singing about sex and I have come to the conclusion that most of them are just stupid, which isn't very nice of me.

PeterAndreForPM · 18/03/2011 21:29

oh, I agree, libra

why striding around with your arse crack hanging about singing about "being empowered" is seen as a good thing, I will never know

EricNorthmansMistress · 18/03/2011 21:36

What about Jessie J and Pink? They are nothing like Rihanna.

Thingumy · 18/03/2011 21:43

I remember Frankie goes to Hollywood and the outcry of their 'relax' lyrics (and video).

I don't listen to shit radio stations that drum out 'pop' crud and nor do I buy their singles.

CHOOGIRL · 18/03/2011 21:53

YABU. She had a difficult upbringing and has managed by hard work, talent (and a bit of luck) to be very successful.
