to think it's completely vile and not ok to have kippers for lunch at WORK?

Colleague who I like a lot (usually) just popped her head round my office door, which is next to kitchen, apologising for upcoming fishy smell, and then proceeded to microwave a fucking kipper. The whole building stinks and she has just posted on facebook 'XX loves a kipper, sorry colleagues for eau de fish' but, sorry, IMO it's gross and selfish to bring in such a stinky foodstuff? When I was pregnant that smell would have actually caused me to hurl (I'm not, but you know)

YANBU!!!!

MrsH75 · 18/03/2011 11:52

YANBU - I like kippers but wouldn't cook them at work!

squeakytoy · 18/03/2011 11:53

I would put on my facebook status XXX thinks XX is an inconsiderate bitch..

pinkthechaffinch · 18/03/2011 11:55

yanbu

mmsmum · 18/03/2011 11:56

She's having a laugh isn't she? Maybe she has been sponsored for red nose day and will tell everyone later

But if not then she should be sacked at once, she can't even say she didn't know since she warned you in advance so she knew what she was doing

No one else will be able to use that microwave now. There are some things you just don't take to work!

poopnscoop · 18/03/2011 11:57

yanbu!!! Thoughtless colleague!

MmeLindt · 18/03/2011 11:57

Don't you have a pregnant woman in the office who could puke on fishy colleagues desk?

EricNorthmansMistress · 18/03/2011 12:02

Sadly no preggers here! Rare since it's a public sector office full of women Grin

Have opened the windows and it has dissipated slightly. Uuurrghghghgh

YANBU - I love kipper but they do stink.....there would certainly be objections if I bought one in and micro'd it.....my colleagues garlic sausage smells bad enough Shock

TobyLerone · 18/03/2011 12:09

YABU. She's entitled to eat whatever she likes, whenever she likes. She'll doubtless have had to put up with a lot of childish ribbing (as happens anywhere I've ever worked when someone microwaves something smelly -- people don't stop whining "Ewwww, what is that smeeeelllll?" for hours) already, and must have known that was coming.

But unless the OP bought that microwave herself, anyone who works there is entitled to use it for whatever they like. And personally, if someone was pregnant and the smell made them feel sick, that's hardly kipper-lady's problem. She shouldn't have to change what she wants for lunch to accommodate other people.

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 18/03/2011 12:10

But isnt there some sort of office ettiquette....common courtesy Hmm

They do stink....for hours!

OTheHugeManatee · 18/03/2011 12:11

YANBU. It is never OK to eat kippers.

Pterosaur · 18/03/2011 12:13

The fact that she apologised in advance shows that she knows people will find it unpleasant, but she went ahead anyway. It's bad manners.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 18/03/2011 12:13

mmm kippers.

I agree she can eat whatever she wants but personally I would draw the line at microwaving kipper. Maybe suggest some nice cold smoked mackerel next time?

Unless you work in an office like the one I used to where people would kick up a massive stink (excuse the pun) if anyone cooked anything which smelled of, you know, food. In which case she is perfectly reasonable to cook a kipper just to piss people off.

AKMD · 18/03/2011 12:17

YANBU, it's not illegal but it is rude. Not inconsiderate because she did consider how everyone would have to put up with the stink but went ahead anyway.

The only excuse would be if SHE is pregnant and craving kippers :o

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/03/2011 12:19

omnom nom kippers! Eric, I flove kippers!

silverangel · 18/03/2011 12:20

YANBU - revolting, we have someone who does it almost weekly and it is VILE.

JitterBug2 · 18/03/2011 12:24

YANBU and she clearly thinks it's very clever to be so selfish by posting it on her FB status. Next time, go in there with a massive can of air fresher and spray it while she's cooking - maybe that way she'll get the message!

Awhiteelephantintheroom · 18/03/2011 12:25

YANBU

EricNorthmansMistress · 18/03/2011 12:25

She's not pregnant but is on a weird diet. To be fair she usually has non smelly cottage cheese and celery....

Ewww weekly? If she started doing it regularly I'd have to have a word!

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 18/03/2011 12:26

Air freshener is far far more disgusting than kippers.

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 18/03/2011 12:31

Mmmm, well in my office there is only one use for the airfreshner .....i find the smell of shit mingled with airfrenshner so much more offensive than the smell of shit alone Hmm

Sorry, totally lowering the tone now!

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 18/03/2011 12:37

Yes, shit and air freshener is disgusting.

We were called into a staff meeting once by the big boss to be told off because the ladies toilets were 'disgusting'. In transpired that by this she meant someone had had a shit (gasp!), and not sprayed air freshener. We were also told it is just basic manners to do a 'courtesy flush'. I was forced to ask what this was, filthy cow that I am, and was told everyone knows you should have a poo, reach round and flush as it touches the water, wipe, and then flush again. How I kept a straight face I don't know.

Or is everyone else in the world doing courtesy flushing? Snort.

Sorry, thread hijack.
