To take DS swimming today

He is 13 months and has just got over a chest infection, he's been on antibiotics for 2 weeks but has pretty much recovered apart from a runny nose and a barking cough. I'm a bit worried cough hasn't cleared so am taking him to the Docs this morning. I'll ask the doctor whether he's OK to go swimming but I'm sure he'll say no so just wanted to see what you all thought? It's a pre-booked lesson btw and he missed last week with being ill so I didn't really want to keep him off again but obviously his health comes first. Its a special baby pool, nice and warm in the changing rooms and the water is warm but they do swim the babies underwater. I'm tempted to go but not have him swim underwater. He does love his swimming and apart from anything else I've nowt else to entertain him with all day! Am I being unreasonable?

YABU.

I wouldn't take him till he's fully better, no. He will probably be weak still from the chest infection. His cough sounds bad. He needs to rest.

You have nothing to entertain him with? No toys? Games? How do you usually care for your son?

TheLadyEvenstar · 18/03/2011 09:36

I wouldn't take him tbh.
You must have other ways to keep him entertained.

YABU

Don't take him until he's 100% better. Not just for his sake but for the other babies in the class too.

Millie1206 · 18/03/2011 09:43

Of course he has toys, just don't like him to be cooped up all day that's all. It's not like I wouldn't give him a bath is it?, but I take your point about the other babies.

I wouldn't take him - not with a runny nose and barking cough. I am sure he wouldn't enjoy it.

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 18/03/2011 09:50

YABU - dont take him, I would leave it another week just to be safe....if he's just getting over a chest infection sounds like its the last thing he needs

twilight3 · 18/03/2011 09:53

he's not infectious for the other babies, but other mums might feel it's disgusting if he has a runny nose. Plus there's bound to be a know-it-all perfect mum who will tell you you shouldn't have brought him and you'll find yourself expaining he's not ifectious anymore blah blah blah -hardly worth it.

Surely there are other ways to entertain a 13 month old for the day... A nice long walk should stimulate him plenty...

ThisFeelsWeird · 18/03/2011 09:56

No way, I wouldn't take him, I know those classes are expensive (Water Babies, right?) but it's not worth the risk. He's not better yet.

Also, do please think about the other babies. I'm sure you wouldn't want another one to suffer. Even if your DS is no longer infectious, you'll get the eye from the other parents when they hear the barking cough!

3littlefrogs · 18/03/2011 09:57

I would wrap him up warm in the pushchair and take him to feed the ducks or something.

Millie1206 · 18/03/2011 11:40

Well surprisingly the Doc said he was OK to go, not infectious anymore etc and that cough is just from inflammation but I think I'll leave it another week given all the comments - you've justified the fact that I'd be keeping him off for good reason and not being precious - thanks.

If the cough is from inflammation he shouldn't get cold, or he'll cough worse at night.

hope he feels better soon.
