Bought at a bakers shouldn't be made from cake mix?

Bought DD2 a chocolate whoopie pie from the bakers this morning after she was brave having a blood test. She said it tasted 'chemically' and when I tried it, it was really obviously made from cake mix and frosting. It tasted exactly like the Dr Oetker mix you can buy in the supermarket.

The bakers advertises that it's cakes are all freshly made. I didn't really expect them to use cake mix though.

No, proper old fashioned bakers schmee.

Cake mix cakes taste different to proper home made cakes don't you think? Slightly 'artifical' tasting.

This is going to KICK OFF.

NiceBears · 17/03/2011 21:06

Ooh I've never, ever started a controversial thread Grin

I shall now make it worse by stating that cake mix cakes are inferior to proper freshly made cakes.

OP - I know what you mean.

Harvester has never been the same since I discovered their food was sent in as is and actually mushroom sauce had pretend mushrooms in it.

NiceBears · 17/03/2011 21:17

WTF? Pretend mushrooms?

OP posts:
FourFortyFour · 17/03/2011 21:19

Yeah, teeny tiny bits of something that could have been anything. I sent it back and made them make me something else.

Nice bears you are totally on the money here

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 17/03/2011 21:50

I dont see the point in cake mix (or batter, wtf?) its not exactly difficult to measure out what you need....

Hmm

[throws homemade bun...]

Idonothaveavisacard · 17/03/2011 21:55

In the cash and carry I go to you can buy a sack of carrot cake mix with "just add oil" written in big letters in the front. Its for all those coffe shops which sell lovely made on the premises carrot cake.

BeingHumum · 17/03/2011 22:08

I know just what you mean. The worst offender to me is pancake batter in a bottle. Worrying :o

BaronessBomburst · 17/03/2011 22:09

I once worked in a bakers-cum-coffee shop and discovered that the scones were freshly made by adding water to a big sack of scone mix. I was unimpressed.

I don't like the idea of cum-coffee, bakers' or otherwise.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 18/03/2011 07:38

cum-coffee

Vajazzler · 18/03/2011 08:09

Cake mix cakes are vile! Home made cakes rock!

My cousin came to stay with us when we were little and wanted to make cakes and got very confused when my mum weighed and measured ingredients instead of getting a box mix. She just couldnt understand how these 'other things' could make cakes!

catzcream · 18/03/2011 08:14

OP - YANBU.

Nice cake = homemade cake. End of.

GetOrfMoiLand · 18/03/2011 08:16

I know a very nice tea room in Devon in a National Trust property which makes scones with scone mix.

Whoopie pies are shit. They sell them in a ridiulously overpriced Cuntcake emporium in Cheltenham. Can't stand poncey cakes.

bupcakesandcunting · 18/03/2011 08:20

"Cuntcake emporium in Cheltenham."

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 18/03/2011 08:28

Was it from that bakery that was on Mary Queen of Shops...she was trying to make them make fresh bread and they kept using the mix stuff. In the end they threw Mary out. Best episode ever!
