Dd is 12 and mil wanted to buy her a gift to cheer her up after our guinea pig died last weekend.

She bought her an Estee Lauder make up set. There must be more that £100 worth of stuff in it. Who buys that for a child!?

It's not fair. I want one! >

Confused

Even I wondered if Estee Lauder was a bit mature for me, never mind for a 12 year old!

ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 17/03/2011 16:42

Memoo - I would not be impressed and it would either be returned or put away for when she's older. It's a ridiculous gift for a 12 year old girl.

Sorry about your GP :(

MadMommaMemoo · 17/03/2011 16:42

I was like this Shock

I might steal borrow it sometime

swapsies - what would DD like in exchange?? Yeah, a nice thought but a very wierd gift!

MadMommaMemoo · 17/03/2011 16:45

Dd really isn't into makeup either, it'll just stay in the bottom of her draw.

Mil always spends a ridiculous amount on the kids. I have spoke to her about it but she us a very stubbon 75 yo with selective hearing.

Ah well, nice to be spoiled sometimes hey. My MIL was as tight as a ducks arse before dementia set in bless her!

MadMommaMemoo · 17/03/2011 16:46

Dd would probably prefer some Darren Shan books, swapping us a good idea! I'll buy her some books and pinch the makeup

Oh my very glamours aunty used to give me presents like this when I was too young to appreciate them.
Even so it's nice.

Nothing to get wound up about. Have you not seen the AIBU threads where people moan that their kids get nothing of their grandparents.

You could always buy it from her. My kids have been happy to swop presents for some cash in the past!!

WEll I am going to be going agrainst the grain here but I think its a lovely gift for a 12 year old. My 13 year old would have loved it. Also Estee Lauder might not be quite as expensive as you think if perhaps MIL uses the products you often get very expensive freebies by bying one or two (I used EL products for a looong time).

Personally I would far rather give them good stuff to use than tat makeup . at 12 perhaps she wont use it all but I bet she loves it.

YANBU to want it for yourself though laughs.

When I was 5 years old my daft and crazy granny (think Cruella De Ville, but without the smoking) bought me a real fur coat.

I cried my eyes out, thought that she herself had killed an animal to make it and my dad ended up having to give it back to her, or hiding it somewhere out of my sight.

I'm still not sure whatever happened to that coat....

OP - YANBU. But be thankful that MIL bought her something so nice.
