all the people full of shit about the earthquake being down to the so-called mega-moon this weekend (er, a big full moon CANNOT affect tectonic plates shifting, you ignorami),apocalyptic 2012 predictions (hmm yes, the Mayans who couldn't foresee the end of their own civilisation coming...), global warming causing all the recent natural disasters (again, not recycling or turning off the lights isn't going to cause earthquakes.)etc etc etc.

Actually I don't care if you think I am BU, I just need to get this off my chest before I upset some gentle wooooooo-wafting soul, to be honest.

Apparantly 2012 by the Mayan calendar has already passed. There are a lot of end dates that have passed too. What always confuses me is when Christians say that things are a sign of the end of the world when even Jesus said no one knows the day nor the hour, except the father not even Jesus Himself.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/03/2011 23:45

debunked

TheFallenMadonna · 15/03/2011 23:45

Or rather - lunacy debunked

dizzyblonde · 15/03/2011 23:58

Thank heaven for some sensible people. So fed up with people who make major life changes based on star signs, angels on their shoulders or other such bollocks. Earthquakes, tsunamis etc are unpleasant but natural events.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 16/03/2011 00:15

confuddled - that's coz of Revelations - but given that Christians believe that God's time is infinite them really even if it's all true (Revelations) and these things are the start of the signs of the end of the world................well there's a heck of a lot of stuff that's supposed to happen between the first bits and the last bits - and with infinite time to play with...............

Have enjoyed reading this thread Grin. Only thing I think holds any water that's been mentioned on here is the full moon. I used to think it was all complete and utter gobshite. And when I started as a carer (working nights) and was told "oh full moons are always really really manic nights" (even more so than usual ones) I laughed at them and told them they were talking bollox. Though a few months into the job we were having one hell of a night and I went out for a fag and it was a full moon. Though "nah - don't be stupid"...........but it was a recurring pattern - and the detailed record sheets we had to keep for each resident confirmed that those full moon nights even the most docile of residents went totally bonkers Shock

(still think it's 99.99% shite - but there was definitely something in it.........)

ladyfirenze · 16/03/2011 00:31

While some studies have reported a weak correlation between shallow, very low intensity earthquakes and lunar activity, there is no empirical evidence of any correlation with major earthquakes.

I read this on wikipedia, so it must be true, non? Grin

Morloth · 16/03/2011 02:08

Shit Happens.

We are very very insignificant in the grand scheme of things, we think we are special and can control this stuff and when it does what it does we want there to be a reason.

But basically, Shit Happens.

HowsTheSerenity · 16/03/2011 02:58

I know it has been proven that full moons do not affect peoples behaviour but trust me, after working for the ambulance service the loonies are definately out in force on a full moon. And god (insert deity of choice) forbid that a full moon landed on a saturday night!!

lavenderbongo · 16/03/2011 03:56

I am in NZ and there is a prediction by some bloke that there will be a big earthquake on the 20th. People here are very shaken by the Christchurch earthquake and by what has happened in Japan and some are believing all these rumours. One of my friends is even heading out of Wellington on the 20th just because of this rumour.

I do find myself being more sensitive to any rumblings or floor shakes (like when the bus goes by Grin) as
the reality of an severe earthquake is that much more at the forefront of my mind. But not because of any woo type theory. Just because the tectonic plates are clearly moving at the moment. I don't think this has anything to do with the moon or end of the world theories. San Francisco earthquake? Pompee? Haiti, New Orleans? There have been so many similar catastrophic events through history that I think we have just been lucky in recent years that nothing too disasterous has happened.

lavenderbongo · 16/03/2011 03:57

pompei - sorry

gooseberrybushes · 16/03/2011 06:11

Biscuit at these God I'm so rational and everyone else is a deluded twat threads. Even when something is so obviously wrong and people are just enjoying a bit of gossip around the subject CHRIST they're so STUPID and we're so INTELLIGENT.

seeker · 16/03/2011 06:59

There is more bonkersness on the night of the full moon a. Becasue it is light and B. because people think there is going to be to it's used as an excuse/explanation. Simple.

mumbar · 16/03/2011 07:06

Ah, gutted. I didn't believe my collegue when she told me about lunar and lunacy. Then I thought I had some interesting fact under my belt.

Shame in live in the 21st century, I may have been classed as itelligent in the 1500's. Grin

mumbar · 16/03/2011 07:09

Then again as baroque has encountered real situations like me I may just hang on to the theory. Wink

CaveMum · 16/03/2011 08:29

I think conspiracy theories are the modern day equivalent of old civilisations blaming "the gods". They didn't understand why volcanos errupted/earthquakes/floods etc so it was blamed on the gods being angry.
These days we understand how these natural disasters are caused so we now use conspiracy theories to explain things WE don't understand. In a few 1,000 years I'm sure our descendants will think we were bonkers!

ArfurBrain · 16/03/2011 08:55

mumbar, to be fair, I'm prone to a little full moon madness myself on occasion - but as I said earlier, that's more to do with my menstrual cycle...I get very ranty in the run up. Hence this thread...Hmm Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 16/03/2011 09:01

seeker - you see that just didn't work with the people I worked with - most of them didn't even know what day of the week it was let alone if it was a full moon. If they saw a full moon out of the window early in the evening they would have forgotten 5 minutes later Shock And given that the curtains and blinds were always shut once it got dark the probably wouldn't have seen the moon anyhow Confused.

I tried very VERY hard to come up with some plausible explanation for it all - given that I think it's a load of shite this "full moon" business.......but I couldn't. 'twas one of those mysteries that will bug me for the rest of my life..............or something like that Wink

Skifit · 16/03/2011 09:02

I had a ridiculous text from an unknown number last night saying to be careful today and not go out i the rain as it will be full of radiation that could cause cancer, and its Acid rain. It can burn your skin and make your hair fall out !! Well possible if i lived in Japan or near.
This unknown sender must be living over in the east near Japan or somewhere. Then the number called me 2x. I was puzzled but just thought it was a mistake .
Any thoughts? We are ok here surely ?

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 16/03/2011 10:35

You don't think acid rain that made your hair fall out would make the morning news? Hmm

confuddledDOTcom · 16/03/2011 13:25

There are places where the full moon has an effect and there's not a good reason why. Why do more women go into labour on a full moon? I was taken in in pre-term labour on a full moon and had to be transfered because the hospital was full. They said it's always like this on a full moon.

I'm not convinced by the light argument tbh, this is the 21st century where it's always light because of streetlights. Maybe it works in the country but round here very little light at night is natural.

EldritchCleavage · 16/03/2011 13:36

What is this earthquake grapevine? Do tectonic plates now have Twitter accounts? I think we should be told.
