all the people full of shit about the earthquake being down to the so-called mega-moon this weekend (er, a big full moon CANNOT affect tectonic plates shifting, you ignorami),apocalyptic 2012 predictions (hmm yes, the Mayans who couldn't foresee the end of their own civilisation coming...), global warming causing all the recent natural disasters (again, not recycling or turning off the lights isn't going to cause earthquakes.)etc etc etc.

Actually I don't care if you think I am BU, I just need to get this off my chest before I upset some gentle wooooooo-wafting soul, to be honest.

Apparently it was an astrologer (Richard Nolle) who decided there was a correlation between super moon and disasters. (ie not a scientist.....)

nikki1978 · 15/03/2011 15:58

I have just read some Americans believe the earthquake and tsunami in Japan is karma for Pearl Harbour Shock

Twats

This moon thing happens every 20 years doesn't it? No different this time I would guess.

Those bloody Mayans have a lot to answer for - the crazies will get hysterical at every event until next December. Just think how bad it is going to be then! God help us!

Petalouda · 15/03/2011 15:58

Thanks weegie, I'll be seeing the HoD directly after mat leave to get some INSET and locate the beard hair.

Incidentally, can I substitute tweed for brown cord?

Finbar · 15/03/2011 16:02

Correlation is not causation

The moon can affect tides not earthquakes.

Its just part of humans' need to attribute random occurrences to something bigger by way of explanation when nothing else seems to fit their own view.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 15/03/2011 16:03

I am loving the idea of the mega moon just randomly branching in to other areas of earth fuckery. Let's hope the bastard doesn't get interested in the stock market.

ArfurBrain · 15/03/2011 16:04

OK. Here is a Public Service for twat-wankery-woo-ers! If any of you really believe the world is going to end in December 2012, how would you like me to look after all your money for you, in a safe place? Just in case you're wrong.

I always have an image of a rather bored and fed up mayan saying 'can't find me chisel....meh'

lIllyall · 15/03/2011 16:05

Earth has stored huge amounts of internal energy inside its outer crust, and the minute changes in the tidal powers exerted by the moon or sun, are insufficient to overcome the much greater forces inside the planet, due to convection and other aspects of the internal energy balance that drives plate tectonics.

ArfurBrain · 15/03/2011 16:05

chickens - rofl. Or. Perhaps he already IS!

Petalouda · 15/03/2011 16:06

Finbar there's something about that in New Scientist this week too!

Something along the lines of.... "the ability to decide whether a stimulus... is caused by some .. possibly dangerous entity.. causes people to see deliberate action in meaningless events" (extracted the irrelevant specifics). Written by Richard Wiseman - Professor of the Public Understanding of Psychology @ Uni of Herefordshire.

Recession

Mega Moon

Just saying.........

lIllyall · 15/03/2011 16:10

previous quote by noted NASA scientist Jim Garvin in response to astrologer Richard Nolle. I trust NASA science more than astrology. One can put a man on the moon the other can predict i might feel hungry at lunchtime

annapolly · 15/03/2011 16:12

My DD believes all this nonsense, her DP said she has been worrying about it all week.

I thought she should see her GP incase she has PND, her baby is five months old.

I am reasurred to see she is not alone.

MaryDancesTheTango · 15/03/2011 16:15

"Stop asking about the bloody so.called Mega moon. It has nob all to do with anything".

And

"Did I mention that 2012 is utter nonsense as well? It's drivel"

Professor Brian Cox on Twitter.

NeverPoohonaMole · 15/03/2011 16:23

Tell me more about Professor Cox. I like his style Smile

Is he the one who was in D:REAM? Haven't watched him, is it worth it?

TheOohAahBird · 15/03/2011 16:24

Does anyone else think of a large exposed bum when considering a mega moon?

lesley33 · 15/03/2011 16:31

I know earthquakes are caused by teutonic plates moving. But I did read that solar flares also had an effect? Is that not true?

ArfurBrain · 15/03/2011 16:33

Disclaimer: Other scientists are available.

OP posts:
lesley33 · 15/03/2011 16:50

Just read on the NASA website about how there may be a link between solar flares and earthquakes.

adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2007AGUSMIN33A..03J

However, this doesn't mean that the end of the world is coming! There have always been disasters like this. The Japan earthquake was the 6th largest in the last 200 years. But this means there have been 5 larger.

One of the issues is that as we have become more industrialised, there are more buildings and people for earthquakes and tsunamis to destroy and kill.

I remember watching a documentary about a Tsunami in Hawaii in the early 1900's. It killed well under 100 people. It then showed using a computer simulation that the same tsanami today would cover a very densily populated area with a large loss of life.

DMCWelshCakes · 15/03/2011 16:59

freezing - that's true. I'd never considered the DM's role in my ever-growing collection of comedy expletive phrases. Where would I be without Mumsnet & the creative genius of MNers when confronting aforementioned twattery?

ArfurBrain · 15/03/2011 19:24

Hahahaha! Coincidentally, I'm now being followed on twitter by someone into angel healing cards, reiki, spirit writing etc. How the fuck does she KNOW I have been dissing her sisters and brothers on here?
I expect the mega moon has thinned the veil between Believers and Unbelievers or something....

OP posts:
mumbar · 15/03/2011 19:32

actually at work today (I work in SEN school) the pupils in my class (6 severe ASD 14-16 yo) were all very disturbed, I asked if it was a full moon (known to affect some children with asd).

Collegue said actually could be due to BIG moon and that she'd heard it could have had an impact on the size of the Japan Tsumnami.

Not so wierd if you look into the moon, lunacy, LUNAR affects etc etc.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 15/03/2011 19:55

doesn't matter if she heard that, its not true. Can't be true. Little thing called physics getting in the way.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 15/03/2011 19:56

lunacy too, its only the word that has actual links to the moon you know.

seeker · 15/03/2011 20:07

Prof Cox was asked on the radion why pwoplw believed in astrology. He paused - then said "It's because they are not very good at thinking" I can forgive a lot of his pretentious gaxing at mountains while wearing expensive leisure wear for that.

A propos - has anyone seen his wife's rather terse articles about "Invisible Wife Syndrome"? What with her being rather a clever physicist and all....
