to not understand why they can't make a nappy that keeps in poo

its 5am and I should be quietly putting dd back to bed after her feed but she had a poo. one of the up the back and leak through the vest variety. of course, I had to change her clothes as well. now I'm struggling to get her back to sleep after all that excitement.
so...AIBU to not understand why with all the 'new improvements' they make to nappies, why can't they keep in poo? I have NEVER had a wee leak but I have had explosive poo leaks with every brand. see on the advert, when they pour that blue liquid to show how absorbent it is, would be far more impressed if they filled it with jelly and then splatted it on the table without it erupting. I would buy that brand religiously.

I think explosive poo's are part of the joys of having children unfortunately although it would be lovely if they made a nappy that keeps it in.

I found Sainsburys own brand (Little One's?) to be the best when using disposables. We use cloth now and only had 2 up the back through the clothes poo's. One on the toddler a few days ago but he's had a tummy bug and one on the baby when dp forgot to do the nappy up in a sleepy daze. Grin

Fwiw I used cloth for both of mine and never had a leak, except when I used disposables on holiday.

Yes, change to cloth - they have elastic at the back for a start! Again I never had a poo leak with my cloth nappies. And the thought of having those gel crystals next to my baby's skin for 12 hours at night filled me with horror.

Sorry, but I think that it's your baby. Grin We were astonished when we had DD1 that no nappy - even the really expensive ones - kept in poo, ever. Every nappy change was a clothes change too. Fast forward to DD2, and we found it easy to find a brand that contained the poo. And then we realised that DD1 was just a very, ahem, productive baby. Grin

We've virtually never had a leaky pooey nappy but I have yet to find a nappy that can contain my boys wee overnight. Currently he can go max 5 hours without becoming soaked. Current combo is tesco ultradry with booster added, and a wrap over the top. Still he is changed twice a night or is soaking. Hmm

Never had wee leaks, but by god the poo was explosive when DS was younger. A couple of times it exploded up his back and reached his neck (usually when he was sitting down and there was nowhere else for the poo to 'go').

Tried lots of different nappies, but I'm afraid it only sorted itself out once he started on solids. Until then, I bought those disposable maternity mats and lined the buggy with them in case it happened when we were out and about. I always took spare clothes with me as well!

I'm just grateful that it wasn't me carrying him in the front-facing baby bjorn that time when DS had an 'episode' in it....poor DH, on the other hand, got a bit of a surprise.

Use cloth. We started using it with DS when he was about 10/12 weeks old, and the extra loads we did of nappies were balanced by the loads of poo-covered clothes we weren't having to wash.

We had several accidents when we were away on holiday/weekends etc and using disposables, including one memorable one where DS shat all over my lap in a pub as I was feeding him. That one was fun, not!

We do them up quite tight round dd's tum and very often her poo reaches up to the waistbandy bit but doesn't come out the top. Would that help? She's in Nature Baby ones which are quite stretchy on the waist.

Cloth all the way! I used disposables on ds1 and ds2 and cloth on ds3 and ds4. Regularly had poo leaks with the first two, rarely with the second two. In fact the only time we had poo leaks with ds3 was when we used disposables on holiday

I think it depends on the baby, too. DD rarely had poo explosions as she has quite a petite bottom, but DS has a very deep bum cleavage that practically funnels the stuff up his back. At first I thought that his testicles were acting as some sort of flood barrier Grin

I don't know why someone hasn't come up with vests that have removable bottom halves. It would be great if you could just replace the bit from the nipple line down & swap it for another, rather than having to take everything off over the baby's head to get to the pooey vest.

I also think there should be more baby clothes in bright yellow. Whites, pinks and blues are no match for colostrum, poo and puree stains!

Cloth nappies are good for tinies but not so reliable for toddlers IME despite trying a few designs - pooey thighs ahoy...

thanks everyone for the support, and for helping me realize my dd isn't too bad - up to the neck? up and down the way? and I lmao at testicles as flood barriers!
my council runs a scheme where you get money back for trying cloth so I just might do that.

My son's finest moment was when he poo exploded up the back of his vest and back down his sleeves. Ah the joys of a breastfed baby!
