not life and death obviously, but I would be grateful for a few views

are crumpets OK for a child's breakfast? If you were a teacher and you asked a hyper child "what did you have for breakfast" and they said "crumpets" would you think anything of it?

Seems reasonable to me, same as toast really. As long as it is english crumpets, not Scottish ones.

SlainteBooyFeckingHoo · 14/03/2011 13:44

crumpets is a perfectly good breakfast for children. i love crumpets toasted with jam and butter. my dcs like mashed banana spread on them.

BadPoet · 14/03/2011 13:45

Wouldn't think anything of it.

ImeldaM · 14/03/2011 13:46

I think crumpets are definately acceptabe.

Awhiteelephantintheroom · 14/03/2011 13:46

My children all love crumpets with spread and marmite. I would think a teacher was very judgemental and should mind their own business if they thought it bad that my child had had crumpets for breakfast.

ImeldaM · 14/03/2011 13:46

acceptable

Honeybee79 · 14/03/2011 13:47

Wouldn't think anything of it to be honest - they're no better or worse than toast!

RightUpMyRue · 14/03/2011 13:47

Not sure I'd serve them everyday, because when I have them I like LOTS of butter on them, but nowt wrong with them every so often.

I like them with marmite on them. They give me heartburn though.

Ignore teacher, it is not her job to tell you what to give for breakfast.

caughtinanet · 14/03/2011 13:48

Totally acceptable in this house, really don't care whether a teacher thinks its acceptable.

Are you the teacher or the parent ?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 14/03/2011 13:48

Perfectly acceptable.

People are weirdly hung up on breakfast food. It isn't like cereal has any amazing properties, it is just what we are used to.

gallifrey · 14/03/2011 13:48

My daughter has crumpets for breakfast about twice a week, don't see anything wrong with it myself :)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 14/03/2011 13:49

Absolutely fine, as long as you don't hold them holes side up!

Prunnhilda · 14/03/2011 13:49

DS often has two crumpets with butter and marmite.
I do often give him a banana as well.
Maybe the worry is too much white flour = not enough slow-release carb?
I'd rather see him eat a couple of crumpets than a bowl of Rice Crispies - they must keep a child going for about 3 minutes after the bell.

FreudianSlippery · 14/03/2011 13:49

No different from having toast really is it? I personally wouldn't have them for breakfast, but nothing wrong with it IMO - why d'you ask?

They're fine. Also bear in mind that French children eat croissants with hot chocolate for breakfast.

Well they did when I spent some time there anyway!

FollowMe · 14/03/2011 13:50

DS went to school this morning having eaaten 4 crumpets and nutella for breakfast Smile

FreudianSlippery · 14/03/2011 13:51

I guess you could compare nutritionally, they may be higher in sugar perhaps - but surely the topping makes more of a difference when you compare, say, really sweet jam to peanut butter?

Awhiteelephantintheroom · 14/03/2011 13:51

My kids all had pain au chocolat for breakfast this morning, if teachers think crumpets are bad I would think they would be leaping up and down and calling social services over that...

BiddytheKnackerwoman · 14/03/2011 13:51

I think crumpets would be fine, my only concern would be would they fill a child up enough?

My DS (9) would be gnawing his hand off by break time if thats all he had for breakfast.

myredcardigan · 14/03/2011 13:51

My eldest DD loved crumpet and banana. My children are ravenous in the morning and tend to have cereal around 7am then either fruit or crumpet/toast just before we leave at 8.10.

FreudianSlippery · 14/03/2011 13:54

Last post was unclear sorry, I meant the topping makes more of a difference to sugar intake than whether it's a crumpet or bread.

Presumably a crumpet with low fat spread is healthier than cheap white bread with chocolate spread!

FreudianSlippery · 14/03/2011 13:54

WHY?

bringonthegoat · 14/03/2011 13:55

We had crumpets today - yum! Why do you ask?

BalloonSlayer · 14/03/2011 13:55

A lot better for you than frosties or any other breakfast cereal, I'd say.
