To think breast fed babies are more intellegent

thecatamongthepidgeons · 13/03/2011 19:52

Because their parents tend to be more intellegent not because they were breast fed?
More intellegent parents are more likely to choose to breast feed regardless of any dificulties they face if they think it will benefit their children.

I was breastfed and am a complete genius Grin. Sister was bottle fed (8wks premature, ICU for over a month), she is also a genius!!

Bearing in mind this was 30+ years ago when formula was worse than today, I tend to think it probably doesn't make all that much difference.

I think the benefits from BF are more to do with comfort, security and excellent immune-boosting rather than those little grey cells.

southeastastra · 13/03/2011 21:40

most older middle class women can afford to sit on their arses alot more

the majority of people in this country have to worry about getting back to work within 6 months of having their child for starters

5DollarShake · 13/03/2011 21:40

Jareth - it wasn't the way I phrased it. I never said that...? I was responding to you quoting someone else, thanks very much.

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/03/2011 21:50

Without any kind of studies or statistics presented to me, I would suggest that the majority of the most intelligent children are borne of intelligent adults and nurtured lovingly in a positive, stable and supportive home environment.

If breastfeeding over formula feeding makes a difference in those circumstances, then surely it can only be by a miniscule/negligible amount.

PepsiPopcorn · 13/03/2011 21:51

Well said, bibbitybobbityhat.

reallytired · 13/03/2011 22:01

JarethTheGoblinKing
Here is a link that shows there is certainly some evidence that postnatal depresion lowers a child's IQ.

journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract;jsessionid=759A0F66A5052FDD3819C36D16F7C325.tomcat1?fromPage=online&aid=87777

bjp.rcpsych.org/cgi/content/full/191/5/378

I had very severe postnatal depression, but my son has bucked the trend and is in the top groups for every subject at school. It shows there is always an exception to the rule.

There seems to be more evidence that postnatal depression harms a child's life (in lots of ways) than formula.

Life is a balancing act. If breastfeeding is making a mother miserable then its the best thing all round for a mother to formula feed.

The problem with these threads it that some posters can be very simplistic. Life is a complicated set of decisions.

Noddyrocks · 13/03/2011 22:09

OP Closed mindedness = lack of intelligence

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/03/2011 22:14

Do you think the op is being closed minded Noddy?

Becaroooo · 13/03/2011 22:18

You can tell there is not much on TV tonight Grin

mayorquimby · 13/03/2011 22:27

Becaroooo · 13/03/2011 22:34

bluerghhh...not for me.

Give me gardners world or something with that nice colin firth in it Smile

grubbalo · 13/03/2011 22:35

I think possibly if the OP had put "AIBU to think that studies showing bf children to be have higher IQs are flawed, because bf children tend to have better educated parents who tend to come from a higher socio-economic class?" then I suspect she would have had a more positive response...

I think (hope) is just a badly written post

Spudulika · 13/03/2011 22:38

YANBU

A child who has had a good few months of breastfeeding will probably be more intelligent than if they'd not had human milk. But only by between 3 to 6 IQ points which isn't much. Still worth having though!

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 22:39

Well, only if she had proof that the studies hadn't corrected for this, which as a rule they do as it's pretty flamin' obvious...

southeastastra · 13/03/2011 22:39

so where in the world are all these super intelligent humans?

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 22:39

that was to grubbalo, btw.

bibbitybobbityhat · 13/03/2011 22:42

They are all here in Mumsnetland, SEA!

eviscerateyourmemory · 13/03/2011 22:43

What super intelligent humans would that be, SEA?

grubbalo · 13/03/2011 22:46

Yes Habbibu I agree with you... was just meaning to say that it wouldn't have sounded quite as bad if she'd phrased it better! (And she might have had a few more people agreeing with her).

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 22:47

Fair enough. Don't know why I won't let this drop tonight!

pumpkinaobscura · 13/03/2011 22:48

DP is actually a genius and he was fed Marvel with a bit of rusk in it from day 1.

MissyKLo · 13/03/2011 22:48

exactly mayorquimby - v for vendetta is on! and outcast on the bbc

oh op you really are trying to create a stir

me, i am a passionate breastfeeder but do understand that some women have had lack of support to be able to get the bf going properly, but i do think women should if they can

but your post is gonna create a stir! a biggggggg stir!

pumpkinaobscura · 13/03/2011 22:48

I was breastfed to the age of 7 and I'm a gibbering idiot.

LisaD1 · 13/03/2011 22:50

I think the OP is probably correct about Breastfed babies being more intelligent... I therefore conclude that the OP MUST have been a FF baby as that is the only logical explanation for the shite they are now posting!

StealthPolarBear · 13/03/2011 22:50

cat, I do see your point (if we are discussing the 6??? IQ points that are meant to be the difference - not the difference between a university place and failing all GCSEs), however the socio economic status of the parents is controlled for.
However, I question your judgement in starting a thread like this!
