To think breast fed babies are more intellegent

thecatamongthepidgeons · 13/03/2011 19:52

Because their parents tend to be more intellegent not because they were breast fed?
More intellegent parents are more likely to choose to breast feed regardless of any dificulties they face if they think it will benefit their children.

OP posts:
toddlerwrangler · 13/03/2011 20:24

I think some people are doing the thing I hate most about this place, and deliberately jumping on woe wording rather then message of the post.

Reasearch is reasearch and OPs opinion is OP's opinion. both have the right to be known!

eviscerateyourmemory · 13/03/2011 20:25

I think that most studies show a difference of a few IQ points (between 4 and 7 in studies that I have seen) after correcting for parental factors, so not likely to be especially noticable on a day to day basis.

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 20:25

No, thecat, people shouldn't avoid FF on the basis of a couple of IQ points at population level, but what they should do is consider whether the professionals doing research might actually have a better idea what they're doing than random punters questioning methodology.

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 20:26

But the message of the post is that the OP doesn't understand research, toddler.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 13/03/2011 20:26

OP, I still don't entirely understand what point you're trying to make?

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 20:27

yy, eviscerate.

Ryoko · 13/03/2011 20:28

This man was breast fed, case closed.

this man

AuntieBranflake · 13/03/2011 20:30

Oh god almighty Ryoko. Case closed I think.

TrinityIsABunnyMunchingRhino · 13/03/2011 20:30

PIGEONS AND MALTESERS!!!!!!!!

aaaaggggh, sorry

comeandsitbythefire · 13/03/2011 20:31

I still don't understand what the OP means.

thepoweroflunch · 13/03/2011 20:31

The sentiment of the OP hasn't gone right over my head but I have to echo what everyone else has said about controlling for social/economic factors etc.

But, as an aside, I think I read somewhere very recently that the increase in IQ points is apparent in breastfed boys but not girls. Anyone know any more about that? I have no idea what the research was or how credible it was, think it was a snatched read in a newspaper sidebar which I had forgotten all about til now.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 13/03/2011 20:31

erm.. hello Trin Grin

thefirstMrsDeVere · 13/03/2011 20:31

See, I get a bit upset by these threads. I am working class and I care about my children. I breast fed.

I hate the assumption that the lower classes are too stupid to realise breastfeeding is good for their children.

I dont care if other people FF or BF btw.

MigratingCoconuts · 13/03/2011 20:33

so, what Op was tring to say was How you feed your baby does not effect intellengence as much as genetic factors

Why not just say it that simply...or were you trying to liven things up Wink

WomanOfMassDestruction · 13/03/2011 20:33

FFS...

And it's pigeons.

SpermyShenanigans · 13/03/2011 20:34

Can't get past the thread title, sorry.

It wasn't a typo because it was repeated several times in the OP.

I don't get the point either but then I was adopted at three months so definitely not BF.

Those six I.Q points are obviously crucial.

majordanjarvis · 13/03/2011 20:35

Maybe the OP read this article?

JarethTheGoblinKing · 13/03/2011 20:35

wtf is all the pigeon and malteser madness?

SpermyShenanigans · 13/03/2011 20:38

Am I allowed to laugh at:

"WomanOfMassDestruction Sun 13-Mar-11 20:33:53

FFS...

And it's pigeons"

No? Oh well Grin

comeandsitbythefire · 13/03/2011 20:38

The sentiment of the OP hasn't gone right over my head really. What I should have said is I was ff and I bf.

upsylazy · 13/03/2011 20:40

Because their parents tend to be more intellegent not because they were breast fed?
More intellegent parents are more likely to choose to breast feed regardless of any dificulties they face if they think it will benefit their children.

Happylander · 13/03/2011 20:41

I wish people would just stop bashing those that choose to ff or like me couldn't breastfeed so had to ff. I disagree with the implication that educated people BF and uneducated people don't. Some of my friends haven't got a GCSE between them and have breastfed others have got degree's and have FF.

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 20:41

Ah, ok, major. Well, the correction is pretty clearly stated there, the effect pretty small - 3-5 points is hardly huge, and it's reported in a newspaper so quite possibly madly misreported.

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 20:42

spellings, Jareth, spellings.

upsylazy · 13/03/2011 20:42

Sorry, that was my son showing me how to copy and paste (that's how advanced my IT skills are) I did tell him not to press post message button.
