To think breast fed babies are more intellegent

thecatamongthepidgeons · 13/03/2011 19:52

Because their parents tend to be more intellegent not because they were breast fed?
More intellegent parents are more likely to choose to breast feed regardless of any dificulties they face if they think it will benefit their children.

yy, Jareth. I mean, it's not as if people doing research have never, like, thought of these things...

DelGirl · 13/03/2011 20:10

here is my very first Biscuit

JarethTheGoblinKing · 13/03/2011 20:10

What toddlerwrangler and bibbity said, but I still think YABU.

OK I was FF and have a PhD, just to get that one out the way. I also ended up FF DD after lots of issues.

But isn't the major factor in a child's educational attainment the mother's level of education? That far outweighs any other factors IIRC. I do think the OP has a point that some of the benefits of BF are overplayed and that is must be difficult to entirely remove bias from the studies.

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 20:12

No, Maryz, because studies correct for these factors, as both Jareth and I have said. Researchers do plan their research to be as Not Stupid as possible, after all.

Habbibu Grin thank you.

It's perhaps not the best anaology to use in AIBU Wink but if you consider studies into heart disease for example, there are going to be huge variations in results due to age/sex/smoking/diet/socio-economic status. People who do these studies take these into consideration.

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 20:14

I don't think that the issue of IQ is particularly overplayed wrt breastfeeding - it's a couple of points at population level, iirc - don't think many people are banging on about it.

clitorisorclitoraint · 13/03/2011 20:15

OP YABAT, an by your reasoning were obviously ff Wink

Booandpops that lime cheesecake sounds lush!

JarethTheGoblinKing · 13/03/2011 20:16

Gah, I can't get onto PubMed at home, but will try and find some relevant articles tomorrow when I'm at work (if this thread hasn't totally disintegrated by thenWink)

gapbear · 13/03/2011 20:16

Ooh, handbag.

FancyALittle · 13/03/2011 20:16

The bottom line is: it's not the be all and end all. DH and I were both bottle fed, his mum smoked throughout pregnancy, we were both brought up on benefits and went to terrible schools. All things you'd think would put us at a disadvantage, but he went to medical school and I went to Oxbridge (both very competitive!).

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 20:17

So this really should be AIBU to think I know fuck-all about how research works?

saffy85 · 13/03/2011 20:17

MIL... Is that you? I know you're on a diet but have a Biscuit anyway.

Ah well, I am not terribly interested in statistics about breasfeeding (twas all a long time ago for me and I feel the endless churning over of it on this forum only serves to make the formula feeders feel like shite) but its jolly interesting to see who will pounce on a poster just because they can.

DilysPrice · 13/03/2011 20:20

I cannot believe the number of posters who are coming on here saying "I know someone who was FF and has a PhD so therefore...". What do you have to feed a baby to make them too thick to understand the concept of averages? Special Brew?

Badly worded OP though.

houseworkwhore · 13/03/2011 20:20

pahahahahahahahhaaahhhaa

falls off chair

JarethTheGoblinKing · 13/03/2011 20:22

Maryz, you actually raise an interesting point though Wink about the 'upper classes', as the impact of previous generations on someone's health is very difficult to measure..

I'm going to have to be careful here, or I'll out myself at work!

Habbibu - another Grin for you

Habbibu · 13/03/2011 20:22

Ach, sorry, Maryz - just riles me when people state the Bleedin Obvious (i.e. the OP) and then it doesn't occur to them that the people doing the research might actually have already thought it - it's pretty typical of how people see research, and it irks me. Wasn't intending to rant at you.

thecatamongthepidgeons · 13/03/2011 20:23

Either people agree with the researchers in which case FFing should be avoided whenever possible or they are possibly wrong and it doesn't matter.
Either way why are people being so upset by my opinion?
When some one questions my parenting I either shrug it off if confident in my choice or consider changing.
