to buy DS a crossbow?

It is something he really wants.

We've always had a somwhat difficult relationship and becoming more strained now he is a teen but he seems really enthusastic about this and i'd like to encourage him.

A few comments from DH makes me wonder if this is an appropriate hobby for him but I recently bought DD a pair of Degus as a treat and DS feels a bit left out.

Does he go to some sort of club to use one?

AtYourCervix · 13/03/2011 19:51

He's a bit of a loner. I thought I'd set up some targets in the garden for him.

I think it's a great idea. But I would definately find out if there is a club, try leisure centers, they often have their own targets and bows he could try.

I wouldn't just buy him one and let him get on with it, he needs to be scared a bit about safety first.

MirandaGoshawk · 13/03/2011 19:55

Why is DH not happy? I would talk to him further about this - he may know something of DS's plans which you do not!

Personally I wouldn't buy a weapon like this. My friend's DH used to shoot cats with his crossbow Sad

have you read 'we need to talk about kevin'? it might put you off!

dementedma · 13/03/2011 19:57

what are a pair of Degus?Confused

MrsChemist · 13/03/2011 19:57

Sounds a lot like 'we need to talk about kevin'

lifeinthemidlands · 13/03/2011 19:58

Is his name Kevin? If so I'd give it a miss.

pooka · 13/03/2011 19:58

Yabu.

FourFortyFour · 13/03/2011 19:58

YABU as it seems to me you are wanting to buy him a crossbow as a way of getting him back on side.

Goblinchild · 13/03/2011 19:59

Check with the police about shooting at targets in your garden. I've shot longbow, and they travel a hell of a distance if you miss the target!
Personally, I'd find a club for him to join and get the handy safety tips along with the training.
Live targets are illegal.

AtYourCervix · 13/03/2011 19:59

we do need to talk more it's true, but i have to admit i've always had a sort of 'feeling' about DS and i know i'm avoiding confronting him because i'm ashamed of my feelings towards him.

A bit of a loner and a leathel weapon

As he no friends at school?
is he bullied?
erm let me think

AtYourCervix · 13/03/2011 20:01

Degus are like big gerbil things. i got them for DD after she had a horrible accident when she was playing with some cleaning fluid and accidentaly lost an eye poor thing.

DS feels left out by all the fuss.

I now think you are channelling a certain novel that has already been mentioned and is one of my least favourite reads ever, so I'm off.

FourFortyFour · 13/03/2011 20:12

How old is your son?

BeenBeta · 13/03/2011 20:19

Crossbows can be as lethal as a gun. He could easily do himself or others a serious injury.

He needs to go to a club and he should not use it at home in the garden. He definitley should not be allowed to take it out of the home to use on common land etc.

redrobin · 13/03/2011 20:55

ha, you totally took me in, i thought you were some freaky real person!

ilovesooty · 13/03/2011 21:17

This isn't a serious thread, surely?

ilovesooty · 13/03/2011 21:23

It is, as I suspected, illegal for a person under 18 to be in charge of a crossbow.

We need to talk....

PigeonMalteaserMadness · 13/03/2011 21:31

I think we need to talk more about your DS.

Obviously your poor DD is "safe" Sad with your DH but you need help now.

doutzen · 13/03/2011 21:43

Poor Celia, how's her eye?

WhatKatieDid · 13/03/2011 21:48

WhatKatieDid · 13/03/2011 21:55
