Popped down to Tesco's earlier today to grab a few bits with DH and DS x 2. When we were checking out the checkout lady picked up some ready made mash that we had selected and said with a sneer 'oh now that IS cheating!'

After picking up my jaw from the floor I growled, 'well sometimes you need to cheat, particularly when you work full time and have two small children!'

Before anyone starts, it is for a meal that I need to prepare in a hurry next week, and usually I would do a meal from fresh ingredients!

I'm sitting here thinking that it wasn't right for me to have had to have justified my selection, AIBU?

No. Why should you have to justify your self? She was out of order. Ignore it.

worraliberty · 12/03/2011 23:25

Oh get a grip she was probably having a laugh!

humanoctopus · 12/03/2011 23:25

Maybe she was just one of those people who get a little bored at the checkout and likes to chat?

From what you said, I don't think what she said was necessitating you having to justify your selection.

Don't worry about it.

ZillionChocolate · 12/03/2011 23:25

Cheeky cow. If she objects she should stop working in Tesco. Their finest cheddar mash is one of my very favourite things to eat.

MissyKLo · 12/03/2011 23:26

Silly cow (her, not you). I can understand why it pissed you off but just have a rant and know that many of us think you are right in thinking she is a twat!

Go get some more ready mash and let her pack it for you Grin

squeakytoy · 12/03/2011 23:26

If she has said it without the sneer I would have laughed along with it.

I buy that mash all the time. It isnt processed, and it is fresh... its is also bloody convenient too.

backwardpossom · 12/03/2011 23:27

Was it really a sneer or was it the kind of sarcastic comment someone would make as a joke?

AgentZigzag · 12/03/2011 23:28

Reminds me of Caroline Aherne on the checkout in The Fast Show Grin

Is it possible you took her friendly banter the wrong way?

Perhaps the sneer was a smile?

Have you had a bad day BlueCat?

methodsandmaterials · 12/03/2011 23:28

A tad oversensitive perhaps; she was probably trying to make conversation.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/03/2011 23:28

Sounds like a joke to me. Unless she was really catsbummouth-ing at.

BlueCat2010 · 12/03/2011 23:29

That's it Worral, she wasn't joking....at least not from where I was standing anyway! If she was joking then it would have been said with a smile, but she was really sneering at me - DH thought so too, so it must have been obvious for him to have commented after we had got to the car.

I'm not going to write and winge about it, and after a good night sleep I'll probably be able to laugh at her for her sad attitude, but at the moment it's just going round my head with 'how dare she!' being the main theme. Angry

LOL Agent - no I haven't had a bad day, at least not until I had that happen anyway!

Thanks everyone for your input!

A useful response to unsolicited comments like this is (in a disinterested tone), "oh, right".
YABU to be upset - who cares what she thinks? It was just a throwaway comment. As the other poster said, she was probably bored and just wanted to say something for the sake of it.

Maylee · 12/03/2011 23:34

YANBU. I dont like it when checkout people talk to me. Anything more than an exchange of please / thank you / have a nice day makes me twitch.

fifi25 · 12/03/2011 23:35

yip i think your being a tad touchy. I wouldnt have given it a 2nd thought

BlueCat2010 · 12/03/2011 23:36

That's a useful response Emsji, I'll try and remember that, thank you.

I appreciate that working checkout is boring, and I usually start a conversation, but there was just something about this woman - maybe she was the one having a bad day, LOL! Grin

Time for a Wine and then to bed methinks.

I suppose you can take the comment as being directed at you, OP, or you can take it as being a general comment about the mash being the 'lazy version', and it wasn't directed at anybody, just the product.

I think perhaps you might have been a bit touchy but I don't see that you need to justify your choices to anybody at all. I'll happily use Aunt Bessie's yorkshire pudings, they turn out better than mine ever will and I don't care what anybody thinks about them, we like them. Grin

GreenEyesandHam · 12/03/2011 23:40

Christ, it's banter, not a life judgement- do you really think anyone sat on a checkout really gives a holy crap??

I think you took it the wrong way, or the assistant had one of those 'unfortunate' faces that people always think are hard, but seriously- she did not care.

FWIW- I buy ready mash. It saves me the bother of peeling, boiling and mashing potatoes. If anyone has a problem with that, boo the fucking hoo

CarnivalBizarre · 12/03/2011 23:42

hmm I think you are being a tad sensitive, unless you feel particularly guilty about not boiling potatoes that you have peeled lovingly by hand to make your very own mash Grin

I wonder if the checkout woman makes comments if folk are buying a bottle of vodka....."possible alcohol problem?"

I doubt it ...she was probably just making a lighthearted joke

BlueCat2010 · 12/03/2011 23:42

Oh yum, Aunt Bessies are great, I'm with you on that LWITW - maybe I should thank my stars I hadn't got a ready cooked chicken, pre-prepared mash and veg and a packet of Aunt Bessies - she probably would have fainted on me for being such a lazy preson! Blush

OP posts:
zikes · 12/03/2011 23:44

Well, it IS cheating. #runs away# Grin

BlueCat2010 · 12/03/2011 23:46

LOL - I wondered when someone was going to say that Zikes! Grin

maras2 · 12/03/2011 23:47

Cheeky mare.Ilove instant mash.

AgentZigzag · 12/03/2011 23:47

I love looking in other peoples trollies to see what they're buying before I silently pass judgement on the type of person they are Grin
