To keep putting him in his playpen/ travel cot

Every time I let him out (10 months old) he makes a bee line for the TV stand standing up at it and starts reaching, trying to grab the telly.

I shout at him but he just smiles, I pick him up and move him away and he goes racing off back to the TV again.

He's screaming now, he don't like being in the travel cot, why will he not just play with his toys .

Try to show him something he CAN do at the telly. Take his hand, be gentle. You can stroke this bit eg. If he touches the screen, say calmly while moving his hand - no. stroke THIS bit. If he continues move him away. Prepare to do this A LOT. eventually, it will sink in. Honest.

He is ten months! he wants to explore!

At that age DS2 was exactly the same, it does stop eventually. In the meantime we built a little barricade around the TV - doesn't have to be high but wide is good. I think we used a combination of toy boxes (with no lids) across the front and the firescreen to the side, so he couldn't get to the on/off button.

They have an inbuilt you are not suppose to touch this radar. Put the tv in the playpen and let him roam free.

Is it safe (and I understand if it really won't work) for you to secure the tv somehow, let him go for it and fiddle about (while watching him like a hawk) but don't freak at him. If he's reached the stage of doing it because he loves the attention you might need to find a way around it and call his bluff. He might think it's a game now.

I ended up with margarine lids taped over the buttons on my tv as DD would not stop pressing them. And DS pulled the old tv over and broke it (he was fine).

TV in the playpen genius!, if I can get the DVD shelves in there as well it would be perfect.

I thought about a fire guard how sturdy are they?, he's not stupid he's moved things out the way before so he can get at the 360, everytime I've tried to cover that up.

I don't want him touching the screen, it's free standing LCD on a stand, it's not very sturdy, the base isn't even flat it's started getting bent over the years so it's not a very good design I guess, it's got a bit of cardboard under the front to stop it rocking back and forth (it's a Samsung).

can it be screwed down? We have a Samsung and it is screwed into the top of the unit it is on.

And no, YANBU to keep putting him into a playpen but if it is only a travel cot then it's probably quite small. I had a playpen for DS but it took up 75% of the available floor space in the living room (small house), he had all his toys in there with him and he couldn't reach the tv, so it worked very well. And gave him something to safely cruise around.

This place is too small for a real play pen, can't screw it down theres no way to actually do it, you can get a wall bracket for that one but the only external walls I have contain windows all along them, if you see what I mean, I doubt the others are strong enough to take it

we have just gone through that exact situation,and everytime he touched the tv etc he would get put in the travel cot and told "NO" .. didnt work, so now we use the travel cot to block his access to the tv,:)

You need to make sure yor T.V is secured.
It sounds very dangerous.
can you not get some sturdier stand for it?, or maybe get some mdf, and create a box with a cut out big enough for the screen so it can't fall on him?

Its not really fair to keep him in his travel cot most of the time, he needs to explore and play.

Once you make the t.v safe, you won't worry to much.

Agree with blocking it off. We have an arm chair one side, a pouffe/large footstool on the other and a toy box inbetween. All v heavy to move. She hasny yet realised she could climb on them She is 17mths

YY put the TV in the playpen, or get one of the ones that also open up as a room divider and block his access to the TV.

DD loves the TV and although it's secure and mostly out of reach, she loves to stand in front of it. I tend to distract her away with something else or indeed encourage her to sit further away to watch it. It's repetitive and annoying but that's just the way it is.

I try not to raise my voice as this just encourages DD to do whatever I'm trying to tell her not to because it gets a response. I also use a toybox (without a lid) to stop her getting that close.

You can get straps that allow you to attach your TV to a unit to stop it toppling forward. Alternatively if the base is that knackered (and you have a non-precious unit) I'd just drill a hole in the base and secure with a screw/bolt or two.

I'd secure the telly. You cant put him in the travelcot until he understands?! My DS was like this with the wires under the computer desk. After a while I just moved him away and distracted as no didn't work. Now at 17 months he doesn't go under there. Probably will now I've said this.

Suggest selling your TV on ebay and getting a non flat screen for about £20 then you don't need to worry about your precious telly and your baby can explore his world. Would also suggest not shouting at a 10 month old as in my opinion it is pointless and unfair as he can't understand.

Melonian, no need for that tone. We all find out at our own pace how to deal with our kids. I've had enough nice EXPENSIVE stuff - bought pre-kids - ruined by kids to understand the worry about the telly.

I'm not worried about the telly I would have thought it was perfectly CLEAR that I worry about him knocking it over onto his head, duh!

As someone with HUGE scratch marks across the front of my telly, made by the kids within a week of buying it, I can say that you should worry a bit about the telly too. (we had ours attached to the table by a massive G clamp at this stage, btw - plus a playpen open to form a barrier in front of the telly and glass-fronted cabinet. Check ebay/gumtree/freecycle for playpens!)
