AIBU?

Share your dilemmas and get honest opinions from other Mumsnetters.

What criteria does an OP have to follow to ensure they get a right royal roasting on AIBU?

It's possibly not the subject because I started a thread earlier on an emotional subject and I'm surprised I've not had even a sniff of a flaming

And it's not dependent on the OP just wanting a bunfight, I was on another blatent trolling thread where the OP was spoiling for a fight, but nobody was rising to the bait (you know who you are gloopy hobbyist Grin)

The ones I've seen where the OP got what for is when they ask AIBU, told they are, and continue to argue the toss.

What is it that riles you to a point where you shed your lovely, compassionate RL personality to give the OP of a thread a good hiding?

OP posts:
HeartSkipsABeat · 09/03/2011 20:40

Boasting about your gifted but oh-so-bored at school child is a safe bet!

ZZZenAgain · 09/03/2011 20:43

don't really know, think it might just be the tone of the OP's posts, nothing more than that tbh

bupcakesandcunting · 09/03/2011 20:48

"Dont forget to THANK LOUDLY the one poster who vaguely agrees with you and try to engage them in conversation, whilst ignoring the hundred dissenters. "

Ha ha, that's me that is. Blush

ongakgak · 09/03/2011 20:51

hey bupcakes did you hear that Shabiz the BB contestant was shot the other day there? Wink

bupcakesandcunting · 09/03/2011 20:52
Blush

What did he do to deserve THAT?!

itsalarf · 09/03/2011 21:21

Demonstrating a hideous sense of entitlement. "I live 2000 miles from my best friend, and am so angry that she will not leave her newborn child to come to the evening part of my wedding. I even told her she could pay for her own drinks and still she refuses!"

blinder · 09/03/2011 21:23

Agentzigzag I have once or twice got drawn in. Usually because I can't believe the person is so outrageously blinkered. It's pointless of course.

Focusing on the positives, ignoring the YABUs and drip feeding could just be seen as the thread progressing couldn't it?

You don't want to/can't put everything in the OP, plus people bring up stuff you've forgotten or not thought relevant.

I did skim read the dog rehoming thread though and wonder what exactly they wanted to get from it

OP posts:
carmenelectra · 09/03/2011 23:28

Er read my thread i.e ask if it is unreasonable want a holiday if you have debt more than 50 quid and no savings to pay upfront.

You will get ripped apart and threatened with the fact your DH/DP WILL leave you.Grin

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 10/03/2011 03:37

And yet I started one asking if I should feed my kid beans so I can keep going to an expensive hairdresser, and everyone was really nice and polite. I even put actual money figures in the post - that usually gets everyone judging.

'Tis a mystery.

My theory is it is to do with what time of day you post. Just after dinner, with the DCs quarrelling in the background, the first glass of wine poured and you and your partner playing silent chicken over who's going to do the dishes, is just the time to jump all over an 'AIBU to think that my cleaner should come every day?' post.

loftyclodflop · 10/03/2011 03:53

Object to people swearing so much on MN.

Morloth · 10/03/2011 04:52

My favs are:

OP: AIBU?
Board: Yes
OP: No, I'm not!
Board: Yes, you really are.
OP: I'm not, [insert made up sob story that makes OP seem less unreasonable].
Board: Bullshit
OP: OMG you are all bitches!
Random Poster (or possibly sockpuppet): I can't believe how mean you all are, this is MN at its worse, playground bullying!
OP: Thanks RP!
Board: You are still unreasonable.
OP's DH: You are all silly womens, now listen carefully because I am a man.
Board: Fuck Off.
OP's DH: But but, I am a man.
OP: LOL, sorry someone hacked my account...

Morloth · 10/03/2011 04:54

Tortoise your choices weren't between feeding the kids and the hairdresser, your choices were between feeding the kids luxury products and the hairdresser.

Neither of those things are necessary, they are just nice to have, so you are choosing between two luxuries.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 10/03/2011 04:58

OP's DH: You are all silly womens, now listen carefully because I am a man.

Oh I love it when that happens. It's even better than "Hi i am op's bf and u are all so mean u don't know her she is a lovely person and you are all attacking her". Especially where the entire thread is people saying "OP, your partner is a loser, please dump him".

HecateTheCrone · 10/03/2011 08:09

The mood the first 3 posters who reply are in.

That is what decides whether something will become a kicking

oh yes you ARE being unreasonable

pinkfluffyprincess · 10/03/2011 09:05

OP's have to agree they are wrong if Mumsnet says they are wrong. If you don't back down more and more join in flaming and being nasty to various degrees until the OP doesn't bother coming back. It needn't be an emotive topic either.

pinkfluffyprincess · 10/03/2011 09:05

And thou shalt spell correctly if thou is to be taken seriously in a debate

Hassled · 10/03/2011 09:12

Hecate is right - I think it's completely random; it's based on the mood of the first person who happens to stumble across that thread.

If he/she has had a bad day and isn't in the mood to deal with any crap, gives a fairly robust/sort youself out sort of response, that sets the tone for 90% of the rest of the responses.

If he/she is feeling mellow and reasoned, it all goes swimmingly.

Yep, if you refer to "pitbulls", particularly if you claim that you see them everywhere/one approached you etc unless you are a qualified Dog Legislation Officer with relevent expertise and experience as a court expert witness or at least a vet or rescuer with first hand experience of the breed and know what one really friggin' well looks like.

If you say that most state schools are a disgrace.

If you say that your child attends an independent school/you'd rather she did because most state schools are a disgrace you can get double MN roasting points.

If you admit to voting Tory.

If you state a dislike for "bleeding heart" Liberals.

"Breastfeeding a toddler or above is vomit-inducing". Don't go there. Seriously. Don't. Not unless you want to lose your head.

Also, if you say that all Staffs/ Pit Bulls/German Shepherds/Whatever are dangerous, if you want to get rid of your pet because you are pregnant/now have a child or if you claim that all rescue dogs have no history or background, you will be told you are speaking crap. Most vociferously by me.

And as for not vaccinating your child... flameproof suit and goggles required.

:o

ChaosTrulyReigns · 10/03/2011 09:36

See I don't really understand this.

I started one yesterday, but everyone just thought it was a pistake.Sad

and I was aiming for a flaming

You're all caaahs.
